Sentementally…I like wood….but he isn’t exactly slamming the door shut in Cleveland…so AGREE…quit crying about Wood….the pen wasn’t all that great last year…but I don’t think it is any better this year….and the PEN is KEY to winning divisions and playoff series….

DeRo….sorry….stupid to get rid of him….we have a bunch of dead weight in Gaithright and Miles…and no flexibility…DeRo was one of the few to show up or the playoffs…and was IN A CONTRACT YEAR….so what if he would be lost to FA aafter this season…

Windows open and shut fast…..go after the Texeria’s and the Peavy’s….because you never know what tomorrow might bring…I personally would suffer thru 10 strait crap seasons for 1 WORLD SRIES CROWN NOW….this team (the Cub organization) doesn’t have “baseball intellegence” …like Cardinals, Red Sox, Marlins, TB…..SO…be the NL Yankee’s and buy it once in a while….WE fill the park and the visitor parks….blaah, blah, blah…you know what I’m getting at?

The NBA is a completely different beast.

First off, almost everyone makes the playoffs. 16 teams. The Bulls were practically .500, and made the playoffs. The Cubs will not make the playoffs if they’re near .500.

Secondly, there are only 12 players on a roster, and you only really need 6-7 of them to be decent to compete. One superstar can actually win playoff series if his team is even marginally adequate.

Thirdly, half the teams in the NBA are going broke. That’s how the Bulls got Miller and Salmons, for instance.

A serious dose of realism.

If this fanbase accepts mediocrity, they’ll continue to receive it.

Bad moves need to be scrutinized, and bad play needs to be called out.
And vice versa with good moves, and good play.

That being said, what was so bitchy about my post?! I simply cannot stand willful ignorance and rationalization.

And “it’s a marathon”, or “It’s only May”, are nothing but platitudes recited by those who are unwilling to face up to what they’re seeing.

I’ve spent 30 years listening to Cubs fans convince themselves that it’s still early… until it’s not. And then it’s time for football! And then it’s next year!

OK, how did you feel

When the Cubs got off to such a great start in 2006 and then fell on their ass?

Or in 1985?

Did you think they really had a shot then?

I think the fan base of this team is a bit like people who have been cooped up in a concentration camp most of their lives. Once they get out, they’re paranoid about every little thing.

The things you dismiss aren’t platitudes. They’re the truth. If you watch enough baseball, and not just the Cubs, you know that to be true.

If you deny that, then you just want to be miserable.

by Not Bruce Froemming on May 1, 2009 12:00 AM CDT up reply actions

Really hopeful, and then dejected. Weren't you?

In 2006, they were only 2 games over .500 at this point, but Lee had just gone down and there was a lot of free-fall ahead.

When the losses started piling up, I obviously wanted Dusty gone, and pondered about how so many Cubs fans on this site agreed with Hendry’s decision to pass on Beltran and Vlad Guerrero.

2006 was the natural result of the Bizzaro Hendry years, where we threw 3-4 year deals worth $4M at every middle reliever in the game, while passing on literally every FA worth a damn, and then signed the likes of Burnitz and Jacque to be our corner OFs.

In 1985, I was 9, and I was primarily concerned with finding Cory Snyder’s olympic rookie card in Topps.

07 was completely different

In ‘07 it was rather obvious the team was still trying to shed the bad habits that were ingrained from the last regime. Dusty’s “walks clog the bases” mentality was still rampant in April.

The situation is vastly different this year. Hence I take no comfort in ’07

2-7 in the last 9. Blown out a lot of those games. He’s still sitting. In fact, he continues to send players into the same exact scenarios they’ve been failing in.

That's the problem.

Hendry gave Lou a paper thin roster. He has no choices. He needs a versatile guy like DeRosa, but he traded him for someone with the same offensive numbers. There was no improvement. The team is the same as last year, and last year they lost in the first round.

I understand that

But complaining about people we don’t have anymore, or didn’t get in the offseason is pointless. This is the team we have. What changes can we make with what we have, that’s what I’m looking for.

The guy said he doesn't expect Lou to sit still.

You’re arguing with me, yet arguing my point. Lou WILL sit still, because there’s nothing else to do. Except not bat Lee in the cleanup spot, and not continue playing Soto who’s either mind numbingly lost at the plate, or hurt

I know what you mean.

It’s just that we’re asking the same guy who gave us this team, to make more changes. They have yet to get to the World Series, (and that is the goal, right?) so I think his track record is over all bad. I don’t think Hendry has the know how to put together a championship team. The proof is in the pudding.

WHO?

Please explain???? DerO was traded fro minor league fodder … and they were pitchers….his AVE may suck, but he would be leading the Cubs in RBI’s right now…

That said…he may have been traded to try and set up a Peavy deal…whcih had itt been finished….we wouldn’t all be screaming so loud….

Trade looks real bad right now b/c he is a “super sub” and Cubs need that right now

I think some people are just looking for an explanation for why things are rough right now, and that’s a convenient one.

I had no issue with trading DeRosa in principle. In practice, it was remarkably stupid, because they got nothing in particular for him.

Too early to tell

The prospects they got for him might pan out. Three weeks isn’t enough to judge.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Apr 30, 2009 11:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Serious question.

Is there any turn of events that would cause you to say “you know what? That result is less than optimal?”

Because I’ll clue you in on something here – the Cubs are one of the few big-market teams in an unfair system. And their core is aging, and their window is closing.

They don’t need large numbers of low-ceiling arms in their minor league system — we have scores of those types of guys. And you know what else? If ours don’t pan out, we can scoop up someone else’s prospects who do pan out, like Rich Harden, because their teams can’t afford to pay them, and the Cubs can.

So basically, I don’t give a flying frack what becomes of the three arms we got for DeRosa — I care about the 2009 team, and primarily the fact that no one on this team is capable of being the backup 3B other than the starting 2B! What is that about?

And then, when alternate-world 2016 comes around and those three pitchers are contributing for the Indians, and they can’t afford them anymore… we’ll go get them anyway.

He had a 118 OPS+ and scored 100 runs while playing 5 positions.

Give the guy some credit.

If you look past the Bizzaro Hendry years (everything between the Nomar trade and the Soriano signing, when he got middle-reliever happy and balked at signing Beltran), he’s been a good GM.

Until last offseason, when he lost his goddamn mind.

He's not the worst GM in baseball

but he isn’t close to the best, and while he pulls out some good moves from time to time, he pulls out a lot of really odd, and bad ones to offset them.

He bids against himself an awful lot (Marquis, Jones, Bradley) and overvalues his own players too much. Remember when Hill and Pie were considered untouchable a few years ago? Now we’re dealing them for a bag of balls and a thank you card.

Long-time fan, first time ticketholder.

This offseason was ridiculous – they seemed to be intentionally antagonizing the fanbase, and making counterproductive moves in order to appear smart.

Now, we’re seeing that it’s a bad idea to have no backup 3B, no backup SS, and tens of millions invested in very, very flawed players.

Kerry Wood’s career resurgence was, to quote Blago, a f*cking valuable thing. We suddenly had a resurrected hometown hero who happened to be a lights-out closer. And we let him walk for nothing!? Didn’t even offer arbitration, which would have been a 1-year deal? And to save what?

Enough money to “upgrade” to Aaron Miles, that’s what.

It was a stupid offseason, and I am pissed off that the Cubs fans have to put up with it.

And there’s stars up and down the roster…. Ryno, Jody, Durham, Moreland… everyone’s stats are OK, the starting pitching has been awesome… but why are they losing all the time?

Lousy bullpen, lousy fundamentals, no killer instinct, inexplicable desire to bat Lee-I-mean Sarge 3rd every day despite the fact that he’s barely hitting .200…. No one hitting for much power…. and did I mention the lousy bullpen?

It does remind me of that a little bit, except

in ‘84 those guys had career years. You knew they weren’t going to produce that well again. No one last year had a career year, I hope. That’s what made this season sort of hopeful.

Ryan. Dempster.

Heck, Mark DeRosa. Jimmy Ballgame playing WAY over his AARP-rating, and Reed Johnson pounding the lefties.

Hell, I don’t want to say it, but Geo Soto’s 120 OPS+ is looking pretty distant at the moment. And Fontenot’s 300-ish plate appearances of 130 OPS+ are, too.

Taking Kerry Wood’s 137 ERA+ off the table for absolutely no reason was subtraction by subtraction.

And again

All four starters were on the DL at the same time that season. That’s a pretty significant development.

And that’s why this does not remind me of 1985 in the least.

What the Cubs need is...

a Manny Ramirez-like-club mood changing-player

by Cubbiegoon on Apr 30, 2009 10:40 PM CDT reply actions

You know who could have filled that role?

The actual Manny Ramirez.

It’s not as though the Cubs are scared of $10M+ contracts. The roster is full of them. We just don’t have any truly elite players.

Cubs have

a lineup of quality major league players. Just that most of them are spectacularly underachieving right now. They’re too good to be this bad for too much longer.

They are good enough to win the division, but go no further. And that’s no longer enough for this fan.

I am starting to wonder about DLee

He really can’t do anything right now. I hope he’s not trying to do to much while hurt.

If he's hurt -

He should step aside for the 29 YEAR OLD ROOKIE (!!!!!) who is actually hitting, and get himself healed up.

they were talking the other night about how he was working on Lou to put him back in the lineup, when it was clear his neck wasn’t okay. I don’t blame Lee for that. He shouldn’t have to “step aside” We have a manager to make those kind of decisions

Remember 1985?

Coming off a spectacular 1984 season, they had this roster —

C Jody Davis
1B Leon Durham
2B Ryne Sandberg
SS Shawon Dunston
3B Ron Cey
LF Gary Matthews
CF Bob Dernier
RF Keith Moreland

Bench – Davy Lopes and his 47 steals

SP Sutcliffe, Trout, Eckersley, Sanderson – all with 20 starts of 3.00-ish pitching.

Closer -Lee Smith

The reigning MVP and the reigning Cy Young. All-Stars all over the diamond.

And the team won 77 games and finished 4th.

MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown

by D98 on Apr 30, 2009 11:23 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think that the starting pitching was the problem.

They got more than 140 starts out of their 5-man rotation (and Ruthven), and their top 4 (Sut, Trout, Eck, Sanderson) were all pretty awesome, and all had 20 starts.

A miserable bullpen, and miserable seasons from “stars” Jody Davis, Ron Cey and Bob Dernier, and Matthews rapid decline, hurt just as much.

Almost as painful was the fact that the guys who were supposed to be huge contributors just had “good” seasons – 110 OPS+ type years, like Lee’s 2008.

I guess what I’m getting at was, in 1985, the pieces were all there, it never quite gelled, and the team failed spectacularly. So there’s a precedent.

This team can't get a break right now

A few more feet and Johnson’s hit wins it. A few more feet and Kosuke catches the first fly ball in the 10th. The Cubs got all the breaks last season. Now, the baseball gods are evening the score a bit.

To the chronic complainers and bitchers, I’d suggest you abandon ship right now. And please, don’t come back. If you can’t handle stuff like this, you shouldn’t be following baseball. The very best teams go through the same streaks.

To the rest of you, hang in there. Better times are coming.

Moreover, baseball, like football, is a game of inches. And this team hasn’t shown that it’s willing to fight for those inches. And when you add up all those inches from all season long, isn’t that what winning is all about? Isn’t that what life is all about? On this team we fight for every inch!

Or, failing that, we mope in the dugout and look reeeeeal stoic.

I don't post

a lot, but have been on the site for a long time. I really can’t figure out if not bruce is a troll getting his jollies or is really, truly just an insufferable prick. Personally, I get frustrated when the Cubs play poorly and lose. Just my personality, I don’t come on here and bitch a lot or ask the team to DFA a bunch of guys; however, the people that do don’t bother me one bit. It’s an open forum. The season is far from over, but there is no denying that this team is playing very poorly right now and has shown no signs of figuring out how to right the ship thus far. Getting everyone healthy would probably be a good start, as well as a bullpen that can hold a lead.

Bruce is in "rare form" tonight...

I think a lot of us are frutrated including myself……Bruce is usually “no crap”….and steady…BUT….doesn’t like the “sky is falling” posts…especially from people who don’t take some time and back up their positions….

I don’t have time or energy to go back and look at all the “mini threads” from last night….but from what I’ve seen ..he’s a little testy tonight…BUT…that said…there are some names I don’t recognize doing some antagonizing too….

The best defense is a good offense.....Lou Pinella...still hasn't managed the Cubs to a post season win. D. Lee still doesn't have a post seasson RBI for Cubs...ditto for Soriano

You U of I boys aren’t so bad after all. :)

I’m as frustrated as a lot of people, but I also realize there’s time to right some of the wrongs here. And that those wrongs aren’t fatal.

Have you ever, um, actually been to Wrigley? It is.

The grandstand most certainly IS crumbling. That’s why the analogy works so well.

Well, that and the fact that you’re screaming ALL IS WELL with your eyes closed while the Marlins circle the bases.

There’s plenty of time for any team to come back as of June 1. But if this team keeps playing like they are, they won’t.

1985 is an apt comparison

The bench is weak, key injuries, and a downswing in production from significant regulars. I don’t recall Dallas Green making any wholesale changes during that season, and I’m wondering how much flexibility Hendry has. From all indications the payroll is maxed out. And there’s a dearth of solid prospects in the system to use as trading chips. I guess all we can do is hope for renewed health and hitting, and maybe the proverbial “lightning in a bottle” via the waiver wire.

by CaliCub on Apr 30, 2009 11:41 PM CDT reply actions

So, what's the difference between

Al pointing out the weaknesses of the team in a post-game wrap and what some of us do here? We all want to see the team get better.
