Good bye Clement, you had a good run with the Cubs and I'll always remember that goatee of yours. Happy trails.

I always like him

Especially how everyone wore those little goatees when he pitched. He pitched the best of his career with the Cubs, 35-36 with a 3.80 ERA.

I liked him

He was a good pitcher. Never amazing, never terrible. Just gave you what you wanted in a #4 starter. He was a fun guy and I’ll always remember him here.

Congrats, Matt!

Really sad

He was never the same after he got hit in the head with a pitch with the Red Sox. People forget how important he was to the Cubs in 2003. He won the crucial 2nd game of the double header to clinch it thus allowing the Cubs to set up
Wood for the opener. He also won what should have been the crucial game 4 of the NLCS vs Willis. Believe it or not I still have my Clement goatee ( if you can call it that) purchased in the parking lot of the Marlins Stadium before the game ( carpeting with adhesive tape). A very special piece of Cubs memorabilia.

My lasting memory of Clement

is that 18-pitch at-bat he threw to some Dodger, who ultimately hit a homer.

Adios, Matt. You were the master at taking a four-run lead and giving up five, or a two-run lead and giving up three.

Sorry about the head. But you weren’t that good.

a fanshot is comparable to a party and Dave Veres is comparable to a guy who won a division-clinching game and Game 4 of the NLCS.

What's wrong with a brief mention?

Clement finished his career with an 87-86 mark. His lifetime ERA+ was 96. If Baker knew what he was doing, Clement should have been in the infamous Game 7 and the Cubs could have been in the World Series. He’s not going to Cooperstown but he has a respectable career that was cut short but injuries.

You should be happy with the post. More opportunities for you to spew how everyone sucks.

In addition to being nasty this is flat out wrong

Clement had 3 effective years with the Cubs. He pitched nearly 600 innings and had an ERA of roughly 3.7 ( too tired to do exact math)
That is solid 3rd starter territory and while Prior and Wood were going down he stayed in. I don’t recall him blowing big leads in fact he tended to get the LEAST run support so maybe instead of the 18 pitch at bat you might remember how much he helped us get as far as we did in 03 and do the best he could to keep us in it in 04 when our highly touted “stars” where on the DL. Clement’s contribution to the Cubs has always been underrated.

Plus

If the Cubs would have given him some more run support he would have had a much better record while with the Cubs.

He NEVER got any run support.

Yes, he did...

He got three runs and gave up four. He got two runs and gave up three.

He got it. It was just never enough.

I couldn’t stand watching him walk out there like a crippled old man with that paint brush on his chin.

And he and that fat freak Alfonseca cost us good prospects.

Nice to see your opinion....

is, more or less, based off assumption and the fact that you feel as if Clement = Ismael Valdez.

I think you need a hobby,

I know opening day is tomorrow Worf but, maybe you should pick up another hobby besides just watching the Cubs. It seems your becoming far to negative. Maybe making reading novels our books of some sort would help. You know maybe a book that could calm you down….

Here we go:

Take 2003, for example.

In games in which Clement took a loss the Cubs scored an average of 2.2 runs per game.

Notable games with a loss:
 IP H R ER BB K
7.0 5 3 3 0 12
8.0 7 2 2 2 7

Notable ND games:
 IP H R ER BB K
7.0 5 1 1 2 9
5.1 4 2 2 3 10

How bout finding ONE game where he gave up three or four run lead ?

Guess because I have time to kill I went through EVERY start in 03 and 04 and found ZERO. He was no Cy Young but he did not in fact blow leads. The closest thing I can find is a Sept 10 game in 03 where he was charged with giving up 3 runs in the sixth when the Cubs had a FOUR run lead but it appears Guthrie and Veres who came in allowed all the inherited runners to score. Bottom line like 99% of your crap you just make it up. So go ahead check the ACTUAL game logs and find all these “blown” leads by the “crippled” old man who made almost every start over his three years with the Cubs

Oh and the 18 pitch at bat where he gave up the homer, it came in the 7th inning of a game with the Cubs down 2-0 and it did make the score 4-0 but as with many of his starts HE GOT NO RUN SUPPORT , he did NOT blow a lead.

Now I bet if you look through 05 you might actually find a game he blew a three or four run lead. He might actually have done it once in three years but you never bother to check facts anyway.

Took about 10 minutes

A waste of time considering you always make stuff up but I thought I owed it to Matt. I think the Saturday he clinched
it for the Cubs might have been my favorite Cub moment.

FYI I did make one mistake , he did in fact give up a three run lead once over three years ( it lead to a tie score).
Why don’t you try looking at the game logs and finding it ? Oh I forgot actually backing up your worthless posts would spoil your fun and take you away from all the shows you have to watch on TVLAND to keep your day interesting.

I thought you said you were a fan of players, not fans, Worf.

You’re using a small – indeed, microscopic – sample to castigate a decent pitcher. Look at Clement’s numbers with the Cubs – they’re absolutely “that good.”

It's a shame he never really made it back after the injury...

I’ll remember him fondly. I was at that game with the 18-pitch AB. He pitched pretty well that night – the Dodgers got two runs off a series of dinky hits in the 3rd, and the home run by Alex Cora (right after giving up his only walk of the night) was the final nail in the coffin. The Cubs managed only five hits and a solitary walk against Wilson Alvarez and Guillermo Mota. On the plus side, at least they didn’t clog the bases.

Greg Maddux's advice to Clement on the 18 pitch at bat

Hey look a Maddux story I have not previously posted. This from a 2004 piece by Tom Verducci in SI

“Remember that great 18-pitch at-bat the Dodgers’ Alex Cora had against Matt Clement this year? Clement kept pumping in sliders, his best pitch, with a 2-and-2 count and Cora kept fouling them off — more than 10 of them — before at last nailing one for a home run. You asked Clement why he threw his best pitch for strikes in that situation. He said that he had just walked the previous hitter and he did not want to go to a full count, lest he walk another batter. You explained that 2-2 is a pitcher’s count, and the hitter is going to take a defensive posture, ready to fight off any pitch. But at 3-2, you said, the hitter is back to being aggressive, reading fastball first and reacting to other pitches as a Plan B; 3-2 is more of a hitter’s count. So don’t be afraid of 3-2, because nine out of 10 times, you said, you can exploit the hitter’s aggressiveness. "I guarantee you,‘’ Mercker told me, " Matt Clement will win games just because of what Greg has told him. I’ve already seen him adjust"

He had an awful time at AAA Memphis last season. I knew he was done then. I wish Dusty had called on him to pitch in the 5th inning of game 7 of the 2003 NLCS.

I'm still convinced the Cubs would have been in the Series if he did

I was so pissed watching that game. Baker would not go out of the box to use his best pitcher in the most important game. That was my turning point on Baker. McKeon outmanaged Baker so badly in that series.

Here's the mlb.com article...

on Clement’s retirement.

Like many Cubs fans, when I think of Clement, I think not only of him, but also his legions of Wrigley followers with brillo pads glued to their chins. I was bummed to see him in leave after ‘04, which, in retrospect, certainly appears to be his career year. He was absolutely a good pitcher during his years with the Cubs. It’s a shame injuries cut his career short.

Clement gave it 100% and that is all you can ask ….Wish he could have stayed healthy he still might be wearing Cubbie Blue ….I also wonder why Baker did"t have him pitch in the 2003 playoff game …. Gotta Wonder ….
