Braves to retire #31, put Maddux in HoF
Aptly deserved for a great pitcher. It's too bad his Cooperstown plaque in 2014 will probably have a Braves hat, too.

As they should...
Just speculating, but Braves front office is probably peeved that the Cubs announced the Jenkins/Maddux #31 retirement before they did theirs.
if this was still new to me, i wouldn't understand

Also, manager Casey Stengel’s #37 was retired by the Yankees and Mets.

Either it's too obvious or it doesn't count, but
Jackie Robinson?

Special case.
Robinson’s number was retired by the Dodgers, the only team he played for, and then by MLB in 1997, so I’d put it in a separate category.

Before anyone asks
Yes I am thinking of going. I can get some very good seats through a friend. Biggest problem is I wanted to be in
DC that day for the Cubs/Nats game. Will have to weigh my options.

Um Cubs regular season game Vs Maddux induction ceremony ?
All things being equal in terms of time & money this would be a no brainer, I would be at TURNER but it is kind of a bitch that it falls in the middle of the Cubs Phillie/DC trip. I just found out there is luncheon too, however I think I blew my watch Maddux eat wad on the
New York Sportswriters dinner. The Atlanta game does have the added bonus of getting the opportunity to see the Mets lose. It would be pretty cool is Glavine where the starter.

Actually...
… Glavine should retire and they could retire both numbers on the same day. Glavine was really awful last year — why he’s coming back is beyond me.

I'm guessing it's because Smoltz hasn't retired, yet
Tommy always seemed to feel like he was in the shadows of Maddux and Smoltz. With Smoltzie’s heat and Maddux’s placement, a guy who nibbles and relies on the home plate ump’s good graces to get strikes is probably going to get the short end of the credit stick.
Glavine had his chance to shine on his own with the Mets, and he blew that. Now with Maddux retired and Smoltz in Boston, he probably feels this is his one chance to show Atlanta fans that he was just as big a factor in those NL East championship seasons as those other guys. The problem’s going to be that he has to follow Derek Lowe and Jair Jurrjens this year.
As for the game on 7/17, I’m definitely going to see if I can get a ticket. The Braves organization usually puts on a good show for their legends, and I imagine the ceremony for Maddux will be fantastic.

Tom Glavine's sterling career is already in place
300 plus wins, 2 Cy Youngs, 5 seasons of 20 plus wins, a World Series Championship, a sure fire 1st ballot Hall of Famer. He doesn’t have to hang around when it is clear he is already finished. He should have retired after 2008.
