USA Today: Cubs biggest increase in payroll; 14/30 clubs drop payroll
"The Cubs, whose payroll is the largest in franchise history, are spending $16.5 million more. The Philadelphia Phillies, the 2008 World Series champions, are the only other big-market team to increase their payrolls by more than $3 million."
Looking at the USA database I see two deviations; they have Dempster at $9M (I have him at $8M), and Zambrano they have him at $18.75M and I have him at $17.75M. My sourced articles have it my way, I think USA Today is inaccurate.
Implications is that 46.66% of the clubs reducing payroll cannot be overlooked. Further rumors persist that Halliday, Peavy and Bedard are already on the trade market.

Don't hold me to this, but
I would pee myself if we got Halliday.

The reason for the difference
is probably due to them spreading out the signing bonuses. That’s my best guess, as Dempster got a 4 mil signing bonus over 4 years while Zambrano got a 5 mil signing bonus over 5 years.
could be
IIRC players get paid April 15th through Oct 15th and the bonus could be evening that out or other bonuses are used to pay off the agent’s commission, but in back tracking USA Today’s numbers it appears they simply added $1M equivalent per year bonus to the annual compensation.
