Perfect use of a FanShot.

Al

Al is there a way to if you have additional information to add to a recent fanshot or fanpost to bring it back on top without creating a new one?

Yes, but in this case this was a different article with new information.

I know and wasn't trying to be a policeman.

I actually thought this discussion should like to the prior given they were related.

Like or link, you are correct.

Good

Print newspapers are a dying medium. The internet came, they scoffed at it, failed to innovate, and are now being wiped away into the abyss.

I think it’s been obvious for years now that writers like Paul Sullivan and Phil Rogers have no business being sportswriters. They are outclassed in every way by those darn intertube bloggers they refused to acknowledge, and eventually the newspaper writers are going to lose their jobs to the same bloggers. And what did they do to innovate, or make themselves relevant? Nothing. They relied on the mistake idea that their extra access would give them everything they needed.

Mark Cuban, owner of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks, wrote recently on his blog that to let newspapers die is a “recipe for disaster” for professional sports leagues because newspapers, however weakened, remain the leagues’ best and only link to a mass audience.

This is surprising to me. Cuban is a pretty smart, younger guy. Either he is paying lip service (does he own newspapers?) or he is truly ignorant. The best link sports fans have to their team is through community portals like BCB or Sportsline or any number of other websites that cater to a fan 24/7 and have the unlimited space to cater to every little distinct whim that a newspaper lacks.

Now, I am sad that honest people will be losing their jobs in the future. But the pain those people, and us (indirectly through the economy), will feel, is just the process of washing away the decay in favor of a new, better system. Supporting a dead medium like newspapers simply delays and drags out the process.

Well put.

And, yeah, that is a surprising remark from Cuban, seeing as how he’s a blogger himself.

Interesting in that Cuban innovated the Net experience with Broadcast.com

The Net is basically an aggregateor without the problem of geographic distribution. Also the Net aggregate’s by using the composite contribution of its eyeballs to add to the experience or participation, both things the print media cannot do in that it is geographic limited and it is a one way medium.

Newspapers like the WSJ, NYT, WaPo, USA Today can get over the geo problem with their branding reach that they are news creators or originators and have expanded the limit of the geo problem.

Their biggest problem, not unlike TV medium is that it is one way. Radio has learned that two way works well with micro markets like talk radio but the problem with one way is that it becomes self important, opinion maker-itis.

Sports is as much a conversation as anything. What will have to happen is that a place like SB Nation will have to begin or fill the void like Huff Post, Politico, TPM and begin getting press credentials and get into the locker rooms. SB could start by getting local beat writers that don’t travel but report on the visiting teams and get Q’s from the SB community after the game and then answer them almost real time. They could net cast post game press conferences.

Fusing the experience would be innovation.

Not everyone is on the internet

I don’t know the split, but papers could still be a valuable source for fans. Lots of older people don’t use the net. For me, obviously I am here, but it is nice sometimes to sit down and read the paper. It forces you to go slower, and maybe soak in a little more. The net is too rapid sometimes. Nothing I love more than sitting in the morning sun having breakfast and going over the boxscores. I think we are really losing something as papers die out. Wish I had the answer. Maybe TV as we know it will be next.
