Bud Light, Cap'n Morgan, Smirnoff - maybe Cubs fans ARE a bunch of drunkards...
Kinda surprised this hasn't been posted yet - did a BCB search but didn't find anything.
Anyway, Wrigley Field should be in high "spirits" this year with the latest corporate sponsorships - the Cap'n Morgan beer garden and the Smirnoff upper deck patio.
I can only imagine the pride Joe Morgan will feel, thinking he has been feted by the Cubs as their latest captain instead of that other second-baseman. Not sure what the Commissioner or Yakov is thinking...

I thought about posting this yesterday...
… just never got around to doing it.
The Cubs are getting their ad dollars where ad dollars can be found — from companies that have it, which these days appears to be alcoholic beverage companies. If it helps us buy some midseason help, I’m fine with it.

Agreed.
I do find it silly that a BEER garden is named after a liquor drink… I bet the prices at that place are going to be crazy.

If they are, people won't go there.

Sure they will.
As a transplant from Iowa, I can tell you people will pay for it just to say they “had at beer in the beer garden.” Sorta like this weekend during my first trip to Miller Park, I’ll be purchasing a brat.
Regulars like yourself won’t go there, but the average tourist probably will.

Up to a point.
After a while, overpriced drinks will drive people to the other bars in the area.

such as murphys, for a 5$ old style?
all the bars around there are outrageously priced.

True enough.
But if the new Cubs place prices their drinks above what the other bars do… the other bars will get the business. They will have to be competitively priced to make it.

Unfortunately
in recessionary times, people find solace in….alcohol. If you watch some CATV nets closely, during prime time, hard liquor ads are plentiful. Bed, Bath, and Beyond commercials…..not as much.

do we ever know
what, or if, bud is thinking?
by tim815 on Apr 8, 2009 2:30 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
bud?
if you mean budweiser I can tell you exactly what they’re thinking:
a) spend $1 on advertising/marketing/sponsorship
b) spend 15 cents producing a family of crappy beer
c) charge $2
collect 85 cent profit on every sale. Multiply by millions……..
if you mean Bud Selig – that’s a blackhole vacuum of time and sense that I dare not venture into.

The beer and booze companies are the ones willing to shell out millions on advertising
These new alcohol venues at Wrigley will be a hit. I hate them, but they will be a big hit regardless. And people will pay through the nose to drink at them. They can charge $10 a drink and the lines will still be 10 deep.

One thing about the alcoholic beverage industry....
it’s pretty recession-proof. In fact, you could even say that a recession and hard times in general might increase sales of alcoholic beverages. Just speculating, but clearly these ballpark venues are going to the highest bidder, who all seem to be part of the booze business. Not sure that’s just a coincidence.
