Minor League Wrap--April 9
I've got to admit, I don't really get this Twitter thing. It seems like a really giant time-suck to me, and I really don't care to know when Rainn Wilson is going to the bathroom. Generally, I think that if it's really important, it will show up elsewhere ten minutes later.
However, I know it's all the rage with the kids today and I want the Minor League Wrap to stay cool with the kids. I can actually think of a use for it, too. I'm going to start posting a headline for the day on twitter so people can see what I think today's big story for the Cubs minor league system without having to read the whole MWL.
So if you want the headlines, they'll be at http://twitter.com/Cubsminorswrap
For example, today's tweet reads:
Starlin Castro goes 3 for 3 in Daytona debut. Ryan Flaherty has two extra base hits in Peoria win.
I'll keep this up if people seem interested in it. Otherwise, I'll stop.
Iowa Cubs
The Round Rock Express avenged the defeat of their parent club by running over the Iowa Cubs, 10-4.
Starter Mitch Atkins didn't make a very strong case for his place in the Chicago Cubs rotation by getting thumped for seven runs over five innings. He allowed seven hits, of which two were home runs. Atkins walked three and struck out five.
Jeff Samardzija didn't help his case either, as the Shark got bit for three runs in two innings of relief. Samardzija also gave up two home runs and three hits total. Samardzija walked two and struck out two.
Oh Sam Fuld. I'm sorry I missed you in the preview. Center fielder Fuld celebrated Passover tonight in the traditional way: by going 3 for 5 with a run scored. Right fielder Brad Snyder was 2 for 5 with a run scored and an RBI.
Tennessee Smokies
The Smokies started out their season falling to the Jacksonville Suns, 7-4.
James Russell got the season off to a rocky start as he was knocked around for four runs and eight hits over 4.2 innings. Two of the hits left the yard. One of the runs was unearned. Russell struck out two and walked only one, although he hit a batter too.
Brian Schlitter also struggled in relief. Coming into the eighth down a run, Schlitter walked two, allowed two hits and two runs in two-thirds of an inning. Schlitter did not record a strikeout and did not finish the inning.
Richie Robnett hit a two-run home run in a 1 for 4 night.
Daytona Cubs
The D-Cub offense got off to a good start, but the bullpen couldn't hold it as the D-Cubs were shipwrecked by the Brevard County Manatees, 5-4.
James Leverton started and only allowed one hit over four innings. Unfortunately, he walked three, which led to two Manatee runs. Leverton struck out four.
Rafael Dolis had a successful return after missing 2008 with an injury. He threw a scoreless inning of relief. He struck out two and hit a batter.
Stephen Vento blew the save and picked up the loss. He allowed two runs on one hit over 1.1 innings of relief. One of the runs was unearned.
So much for the fears that shortstop Starlin Castro might have the jitters jumping up three levels. Castro, batting in the #9 hole, went 3 for 3 with a stolen base and a run scored. Second baseman Marwin Gonzalez was 3 for 4 with a double. He scored once and had an RBI.
DH Tyler Colvin had a successful first game back too. Colvin had two singles in three at bats. He scored once and had an RBI. Almost more importantly, he drew a walk his first time up.
Peoria Chiefs
The Chiefs were the only winner tonight as they caged the Kane County Cougars, 4-1.
Aaron Shafer picked up the win tonight with a strong five-inning start. He allowed only one run on six hits. He didn't walk a batter and struck out two.
Maybe the Cubs knew what they were doing when they got Ryan Butcher from the Nationals in the off-season. He picked up the save with a perfect ninth, striking out two.
Shortstop Ryan Flaherty was 2 for 3 with a double and a triple. He scored once.
Just because I know someone is going to ask, Josh Vitters got hit by a pitch and went 0 for 3 otherwise. He did score a run.

And, as last year...
… I am going to move these wraps to the front page when I see them posted. Thanks, Josh, for doing this again.

Hehe
“shark got bit”
Sorry to see him perform poorly, but that line was well done.
Thanks Josh. Much appreciated.

Yay
for Castro. How awesome would it be if he did well in daytona and became one of the top shortstop prospects
Life's a garden, dig it.
I'm worried for Shark
I have a gut feeling the Cubs are really going to need him later this season, and if he’s not there, they’re going to be in trouble.

Good thing it's early.
Adkins and SpellCheck need work.

Some thoughts
I’m very curious why Samardzija was coming out of the pen today. There’s certainly enough options available (opening day after all), and most indications were that he was being sent down to work on being a starter. I hope that I-Cubs intern that posted in the thread is around, as I am curious about Estrada’s velocity. He’s one of those "well, he isn’t much, but if … " types. Atkins getting hammered shouldn’t surprise many, and the Astros have a decent AAA club this year, particularly on offense, with Chris Johnson, Drew Sutton, Brian Bogusevic, Tommy Manzella, and JR Towles all having varying degress of potential for the bigs. Atkins is what he is, an end of the rotation option if all goes well. Now, what was interesting were those 5 K’s, and it’ll be worth watching how his walk to K ratio, as there’s been some interesting statistics. Offensively, Sam Fuld getting off to a good start bears watching due to our CF situation. Now, if Fukudome struggles, Gathright likely gets first nod. Fuld fits into that “scrappy” offensive mold, particularly since he’s lost some speed from recent past.
James Russell’s breaking ball bears watching. He, by all accounts, showed some improvement last year, but if he can’t get it across consistently, then hitters will tee off on the fast/change combo and he may have to move to the pen, which many predicted out of college. The most interesting note from AA today? Jeremy Papelbon continuing his good work. With indications that the Cubs may be serious about trying Lambert as a starter, and that it isn’t simply a “work on your pitches” type situation, Papelbon could move ahead on the call-up ladder as a lefty option. From a positional perspective, two things stand out. One is Blake Lalli getting a pinch hitter double. I am a Lalli fan – he gets a bad rap due to ARL, but for a 3rd year pro, AA is fine. I think his bat can play for the upper minors. The other is Welington Castillo. Don’t care about the offense, as he’ll make it up if his glove is good enough, but the passed ball and catcher interference stands out in the box score. Will be interested to hear any reports on how he was for the rest of the game.
Watch Marwin Gonzalez. I didn’t predict him as a breakout, but a sleeper he is. Loads of tools. Now, I’m not trying to say 1 game makes a difference of any sort, but the fact that he got the call ahead on Samson for opening day, and that he got off to a good start, has me intrigued some more. The Cubs haven’t hit on the top Latin American names in recent years, but we’ve done good in finding raw talent to mold, guys like Marwin Gonzalez. Now, that error was disappointing, and there’s a reason he works as a utility guy, as I’m not sure he has a natural, good fit position just yet. Castro and Colvin are good signs – the former shouldn’t be expected to go beyond Daytona this year (if he does, that’s a bonus; still wouldn’t stun me if they demoted him to Peoria as the weather warmed), and if the latter gets his bat going, he’ll be back in the upper levels quick, providing another option as Colvin, while he’s a better corner OF, can spot in CF. The other positional note that intrigued me – Russ Canzler at 3rd. I don’t recall much history for Canzler at 3rd, and last I checked, he was working some OF in the spring, along with first. Is this a “we don’t know what to do with him, as Rosa has first” situation? Or is this a Matt Craig, have him learn new positions situation (Cubs demoted Craig a few years back with the intent to work him at catcher – of course, that never materialized)? I do think Canzler may be a quick call up to AA if someone gets bumped to AAA – he was demoted in the last few days of spring to Daytona again, where he had a decent year last year. Leverton was rushed, so I’m not too worried about his walks. As I noted, he throws a circle-change, a high 80’s/low 90’s fastball, and a developing curve. Without knowing the details, I wonder/guess that Leverton might’ve walked some off his curve, so I’m not worried. He’ll be asked to chuck that a lot more. I love the K’s, and the 5/3 GO/FO ratio is fine. As I’ve said before, I’m really pleased with this last draft class in terms of arms depth, and Leverton is an intriguing asset. I hope someone can provide a report on Dolis – I forget if he throws a curve or a slider, but I want to know how consistent that was. He runs it up there in the mid-90’s, and this power arm could be an intriguing pen prospect. Like Ceda, some weight concerns.
I guess I should be happy about Shafer’s start, if the velocity reports are solid. That said … I’ll be watching him closely to see if his stuff is too hittable and if he can’t K enough guys. A superb 11/2 GO/FO ratio helped him tonight. Beliveau out of the pen mildly surprised, as there were reports he might start. Kreier’s K totals are something to follow – I can’t wait to hear velocity/stuff reports, because the kid was productive last year with, by most accounts, fringe stuff, and if his stuff got better, then he deserves to be on the radar a bit, akin to Mitch Atkins when Atkins was coming up. I’ll be mildly surprised if Buchter is the closer, but he’s a solid arm with a high 80’s/low 90’s fastball, a curve, and a change. Offensively, I was intrigued with Peoria early in the year not because of Vitters/Flaherty, but rather, more out of curiousity of what a Campana/Harrison top of the order can do. It looks like Pevey will give them the green light as both stole bases (Harrison picked off once). Campana has blazing speed – Harrison is a bit average but he’s a good baseball player that knows situations, according to most indications. The fact that he’s at DH shouldn’t be a huge concern – Junior Lake is a more intriguing talent on paper right now. Flaherty’s double/triple were nice to see (I want to find out if he has power, or if he has above average power for the position, which is how I’ve seen him described before, particularly considering his swing), and I was also glad to see Rebel Ridling get off to a good start (what a name … I mean, that screams first base/power bat “Rebel”)
you aren't the only one wondering about the shark
I can’t see why they wouldn’t be stretching him out to start.
Hmm....Yes?

The Cubs were pretty clear
that they wanted to give Samardzija one relief appearance before returning him to the rotation. They didn’t think he’d pitched enough in Spring Training to be in the rotation on Day 1. So they wanted to give him one appearance out of the bullpen as he built up his arm strength for a start.

*Some* thoughts?
"I owe [Dunston] a lot. Nobody would know how good I was at digging balls out of the dirt if it wasn't for him..." -Mark Grace
"If [Ruth] had [called his shot], I would have knocked him down with the next pitch." -Charlie Root
Just the first thoughts that came to my mind
when I perused opening day in MiLB for us.
Brief thoughts...
=)
"Manny Trillo is coming in to pinch run. You know, for a lot of teams, you would pinch run for Manny Trillo." - Harry Caray
I'm prepared to say that Rebel Ridling has the coolest name in the entire Cubs organization.
Yes, even better than Micah Hoffpauir. I don’t live all that far from Peoria; if I had more time on my hands, I’d go and see him play.
You can call me "20K."
Jericho Jones
I’ll stick with Jericho Jones as having the coolest name in the Cubs minor leagues. He probably won’t play until Boise starts though.
But honestly, shouldn’t Rebel Ridling and Jericho Jones team up in the off-season to catch the desperadoes who are rustling cattle on the frontier?

The Cubs need to get...
… this guy to complete their posse.

I think we need
to wait and see with some of these players. Adkins and Shark most importantly. Lets see in a month where both these players are at to worry about them.
I think both will help the Cubs down the road.

Josh thanks again for doing this
I know you save me and many others a lot of time by putting these together.

no offense to anyone, but i enjoy this segment more than any other
i can see what the mlb fellas did, even though i cranked down the number of cable channels i get this year. between wgn, espn, and other sources, i can tell how the cubs did to defend their nlc title.
but josh’s updates and the opinions from toonster and others, irreplaceable.
as for twitter-ing, do whatever keeps castro hot. castro, jay jackson, and ‘that guy in peoria, all of them are guys i will look forward to seeing in the big in the future. and with the knowledge i get from here, i’ll be able to take espn ‘experts’ as i should, with a grain of salt.
Josh, great post
and Toonster, I really enjoy your insight. I’m looking forward to seeing the smokies this year since they are just over the mountain and the knowledge i get from both you guys will make it that much more enjoyable
If the world didn't suck we would all fall off.

"The big possums walk late." - Harry Caray
Now the baseball season
has officially started. As much as I love the Cubs and major league ball in general, I am absolutely thrilled that the minor league season has started. Minor league ball is baseball at its purest form and still extremely family friendly. Thanks Josh for bringing this to us once again this year.
Time is an illusion--lunch time doubly so.
Jeremy Papelbon
I see he gave up 1 walk and 1 hit, while striking out three in 1.1 innings. I don’t think of Jeremy as a strikeout pitcher.

He's not
or at least he hasn’t been. Maybe he got lucky or maybe he’s picked something up in the offseason.

The Shark remains a developmental project
He needs to expand his pitching repetoire and gain innings under his belt. If he can help the Cubs late in the season, then great. But I am more focused on making sure he has a viable longer term future as member of the Cub staff.

I'm slowly but surely succumbing to Twitter.
I just like the brevity, though I agree that the TMI factor is high.
Well, the pitching side of this minor league report is rather disappointing. Let’s just hope Samardzija, Atkins, Russell and Schlitter are just off to cold starts. I’d like to see the Shark and Atkins raise their values as rotation insurance, though I’m still not sold on Samardzija ever being a starter. Something tells me he’ll wind up focusing on being an elite setup man and eventual closer. Just a hunch, really.
