I feel bad for him personally, but did anyone here really *not* expect this to happen?

We have moved on.

As noted below, it’s baseball news. That’s a legitimate thing to post on this site, particularly as a FanShot. It was marked “OT”, although non-Cub baseball news isn’t necessarily “off-topic”.

About the article itself, it sounds really, really familiar. My guess is that The Former Employee will never pitch in another major league game.

I don't see anything wrong with posting this

It’s baseball news and people are going to be interested, and it’s not a whiny “what could have been” post.

We'll always have 2003

And to think some screamed with Jim Hendry didn't sign him after 2007...

Remember all those posts? “The Cubs will rue the day they let Prior leave”…“Prior can regain the form that made him a dominant pitcher”….“We’ve already invested so much in him, so why let him walk away now?!?!”

Mark Prior has stolen 6 consecutive years of major league paychecks. I bet he announced his latest shoulder oowie 5 minutes after he got done cashing his San Diego Padre paycheck too.

The window for winning a World Series may have waned.

Doubt it.

The link makes it clear he was signed to a minor league contract.

with malice aforethought?

I have no doubt that Mark Prior would prefer to be a productive big-league pitcher. Granted, he is fortunate that he works in an industry that pays him to rehab, but I’d bet he’d rather be winning games.

I know that I'm not

I think it’s a shame that it hasn’t worked out for him. I guess grim detachment is the best way to describe my reaction.

Agreed.

It’s a very sad situation if you ask me. Someone with all the talent in the world has been reduced to this. You gotta feel for the guy, it’s got to be hard to take.

I’d love to meet the guy and say “thanks for 2003.”

Here's hopin!

For every Bradley naysayer there is probably 500 that are patting themselves on the back for being “right” about prior. Tree falls in forest.

Like many Cub fans I don't like Mark Prior

And I make zero apology for the sentiment. His dedication to craft and his professional demeanor left a tremendous amount to be desired in 2004-2007.

The window for winning a World Series may have waned.

If you had said 2006 and 2007 I might agree with you.

In 2004, Prior threw one of the best games of his career the last week of the season, striking out 16 Reds, only to see the bullpen blow it for him.

In 2005, he suffered a serious elbow injury and instead of being shut down (which is probably what should have happened), he tried to come back in four weeks. It is my opinion that coming back too soon from the broken elbow probably subtly altered his motion, which led to the shoulder trouble. He’s the modern day Dizzy Dean.

Not to mention the collision with Giles.

Prior had some freak injuries that ultimately led to his failed career. He wanted to play and came back too early. I don’t question his heart.

I’ve never understood why so many Cubs fans gave Wood a pass, but not a Prior.

The media is your friend!
I’ve never understood why so many Cubs fans gave Wood a pass, but not a Prior.

I think a big part of this was the perception of the kind of person that Wood was. He was very fan friendly and used the media to portray this. On the other hand Prior came off as aloof. Fair or not, but this had a lot to do with it.

by dmlichte on May 1, 2009 5:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Wood also left everything on the field and kept coming back to try and pitch

Prior got hurt and seemed to disappear

by Cubbie-Tim on May 1, 2009 9:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Not just aloof.....

….. but if there was ever a bigger “Stage Father” than Mark Prior’s dad I have yet to see him. For years, especially the entire time he was with the Cubs and going back to High School, his Dad dictated every single damn thing the kid did. Switching from Vanderbilt to USC, hiring Tom House as his personal coach, micro-managing his social life, Prior has done everything according to his Dad’s dictates, up to and including whatever he does with the press. This has frustrated people from Dusty Baker to Dick Pole to Jim Hendry to Larry Rothschild and various athletic trainers and other coaches all along the way. It’s why he “disappeared” at times. The “freak injuries” notwithstanding, Prior’s throwing motion has invited the troubles he’s had now, and look what it has gotten him. I hope his Dad is happy. He ruined a possible Hall of Fame career.

There's one other "sports father" worse than Jerry Prior.

That’s Todd Marinovich’s dad, who did the same thing with Marinovich, with similar (and predictable) results.

Even if I expected it to happen, what I did not expect was yet another post or fanshot

on the topic. It’s not news/post/fanshot/twitter/iPhone/megaphone worthy..

Well, yes it is.

It’s baseball news, and that’s something that we can and do post in FanShots.

I was present for his last start as a Cub

Man, did he look terrible. He was physically and mentally whipped at that point. I wish him well in life, hopefully some of his money was in bonds. But, what promise he had, and what a wonderful ’03 season. He gave us many memories that year.
