Enough is Enough with the Abuse of Muskat
I have sat silently by while many, many posters here criticized Carrie Muskat over the years. Is she the greatest baseball writer ever? No. Does the fact that she writes for MLB keep her from voicing edgy opinions regarding, honest criticism of or the jucier facts about our favorite team? Probably. Do people criticize her more because she is a female writer than they do male writers who commit the same infractions? I don't know, and I always hoped that was not the case.
But I am breaking my silence, having read some of the comments to Carrie's newest emailbag posting at the Cubs site (see link). In addition to some commenters who actually responded substantively to her column (totally fair game), one commenter called her "ugly" and another said it was probably her time of the month. This crosses a line for me.
I have no idea if those commenters also read/post at BCB, but if you do, PLEASE STOP THE SEXISM. Criticize Carrie on substance all you like, so long as you hold male sportswriters to the same standards. But her physical appearance, "cycles" and the like are not fair game.
Sincerely,
A female lifelong Cubs fan and longtime member of the BCB community

I don't care that she's a woman
I just don’t think she is a good writer. She is better than Phil Rogers, but that isn’t saying much.
Hey the Cubs are good again! This will be a good test of a sig jinx.

Something to remember is that she’s on a site where she has to be careful in what she writes. It’s not a forum for her opinion so much as reporting the facts. That’s what make blogs fun, because they have more freedom.
Be sure to check out The View From The Bleachers for another Cubs blog to add to your RSS reader.

In case I wasn't clear . . .
I’m not saying people should not criticize her writing, but that they should stay clean and fair and not pick on her in a personal way, like the two examples I describe above.

She never bothered me before.
I usually enjoy reading her questions/answers. But this last inbox raised my eyebrows on a couple occasions. First I thought her reply that they had no confidence in Vizcaino was a bit surprising coming from her because like you say working for MLB probably keeps her from voicing those edgier opinions. This seemed borderline gossipy and I found myself wanting to know more, like why or what was going on that led her to believe that. Second, her response to Matt in Tampa was rude. I’m sure she gets plenty of questions. If she thinks the question is dumb or trivial, why choose it as a question to answer at all? Answer someone else. It was unprofessional on her part to give such a snippy answer and I lost some respect for her. Oh, BTW I agree that commenting on looks, etc. are tacky and below the belt. She was a little tacky herself but that doesn’t make it right.

Why the virtual spanking here?
When:
I have no idea if those commenters also read/post at BCB
Why not take your beef to the mlb.com site? I see most, if not all, criticism of Ms. Muskat on BCB based soley on her quality of writing.

Here's one example:
A BCB poster calls her “a devil in a bad wig”:
by dfrancon on May 11, 2009 8:44 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hooray!
People are paying attention to me!

Just for the record, my wig comment was referring more the her devil horns being covered…. okay, maybe I was making fun of her hair, too, but the child in me loves insulting the hair of others.
I have no problem with her being a her, I DO have a problem with her snide remarks. But like I said in the linked post, I’m sure she gets tired of the same stupid questions over and over. In fact, this is what I said:
Anyone ever tried to get information from her? I’m sure she gets stupid questions at a rapid pace, but I’ve seen legitimate questions get blasted in her droll, unhumorous way entirely too often. And I could deal without her speculation being passed on as "fact" or even "hearsay".
I think that is clearly criticizing her writing rather than her aesthetics.

I understand completely
And your overall premise is correct; that her gender should not be an issue or reason to hurl insults. But I also don’t think the bashing of her work is typically related to her gender – I think it’s the work itself, despite comments here and at cubs.com.

Um, I never "claimed those kind of things aren't said here"....
I said “most, if not all, comments are about the quality of her writing”. That was going by memory and without research. If I would have said “ALL of the comments….”, you would be correct, but I didn’t.
Just wanted to make that crystal clear.

I disagree.
Both of these examples reflect comments on her appearance, not her writing ability, and I don’t think these examples are any better than calling her “ugly”—they mean the same thing.

Like I said before, I see the majority of the criticism on her based on how/what she writes.

OK, mea culpa...
…I made a bad joke based on her appearance. (Wouldn’t be the first time…about the bad joke, I mean.) I also defended her in the previous “devil in a bad wig” thread. I’d point out that I’ve also teased Paul Sullivan about his pasty appearance. And it’s hard not to notice what a bizarre lookin’ dude Mike Quade is. I think if you’re in the public spotlight, a certain amount of teasing about one’s personal appearance comes with the territory. I agree that outright sexism is wrong.
As others have mentioned, Carrie Muskat draws a lot of fire here and elsewhere because she’s often vague, sometimes flat-out inaccurate and many of her reponses to mailbag inquires are curt and snippy. She does pass along some interesting tidbits on her blog, and she does an adequate job of writing game and news stories for mlb.com. But she leaves a lot of room for improvement – and that has nothing to do with her gender. Phil Rogers leaves so much room for improvement, you could build a subdivision on it.
I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

I think Muskat gets more abuse around here
than she deserves, but I haven’t noticed any of it being particularly sexist in nature, with the caveat that I don’t read everything. But other than Bruce Miles (who posts here) and maybe Ken Rosenthal, I haven’t heard anyone saying anything nice about a professional sportswriter around here.
But I do agree with you that people could tone down the personal attacks on sportswriters, whether they are sexist or not.

She's doing her job fine
She’s following the guidelines of MLB.com and that’s trying as hard as possible not to judgmental in her writings.
Male or Female it wouldn’t make a difference how’s she’s treated on here because 99% of people on this site are jealous that she has a “dream job” any Cubs fan would want.
by ak123 on May 11, 2009 8:46 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I agree people are jealous of her job,
but I think she draws a much higher level of hate than any other writer. And frankly, I’m not going to judge and am not equipped to evaluate the true motivation for any substantive critique of her. I just don’t want to see the overtly sexist references that I saw today and in the examples from BCB above (which are not exhaustive).

I could swear...
…that Paul Sullivan has taken much more abuse here than Carrie has. But Carrie is terrible, I stopped reading Mailbag YEARS ago and have used this place more than anything for news since.
And hey, if we were to bash Sullivan’s appearance to get at him, I’d say we have every right to do the same to Miskat, male or female. Shouldn’t make a difference just because she’s a woman. Is it right? I disagree with it and will not be the first to use that against someone, but if someone else wants to use it for their argument, I don’t see why not.

What’s wrong with saying that? Saying that a person is ugly isn’t sexist, it’s honest. Is it necessary? Probably not. But I don’t see it as being a huge thing for someone to flip out about.

Well, theoretically...
you’re right. Just as theoretically Erin Andrews got her just because she’s a great reporter, not because she’s smoking hot. So if it’s okay to post a bunch of pictures of her in game threads (not that I’m complaining) it’s pretty hypocritical for someone to take issue with someone calling another journalist ugly.

What if she was your wife ...

If she was my wife or mother...
and I read something like that I’d be pissed, of course. But that stuff just comes with the territory. You don’t put your face in front of hundreds of thousands of readers and not expect people to look at your picture and judge.
Again, it’s pretty low to comment directly on her article where she’ll probably read it. But I don’t see the issue with people saying whether she’s hot or not on an entirely unrelated Cubs blog.

I don't understand why you are acting defensive about this.
This is the Cubs community where I hang out, this is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, Cubs fan communities on the internet, and as I demonstrated above, this community has not been immune to the sort of thing I was talking about—so that’s where I made my post. Let it go.
by dfrancon on May 12, 2009 10:21 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well.....
…if you wanted to comment about the “sexist comments” of BCB, then that should have been your whole point in the first place. It appears from your comments and research that that may have been your point all along. I don’t like being lumped together with an obviously more sexist group like those on mlb.com. That’s why I’m acting “defensive”. And anytime you throw an idea up in a fanpost, you should expect some differing opinions. So, no, I won’t “let it go”.
And Kanderber brings up a good point: Erin Andrews being lauded for her looks instead of her journalistic skills is “sexist” as well, no? Are you up in arms about that as well? Because a helluva lot more of that happens than bagging on the looks of Muskat.
Nobody cares about your fantasy baseball team

"You" aren't being lumped in with anyone.
If you haven’t made such comments, then move along.
And yes, I do think that commenting positively on the appearance of a female journalist is sexist as well, though perhaps not as personally offensive or hurtful as the opposite kind of comment (depending on what is said). The point is that these people should be able to do their jobs and be judged on their merits.
by dfrancon on May 12, 2009 1:30 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
No one's arguing your point....
…and if you would have just left it at that on your fanpost, you would have been fine.
But to accuse the BCB of the same infranctions as MLB.com, and then site sources from threads in October, well, that changed the tone of the post for me. Specifically:
I have no idea if those commenters also read/post at BCB, but if you do, PLEASE STOP THE SEXISM. Criticize Carrie on substance all you like, so long as you hold male sportswriters to the same standards. But her physical appearance, “cycles” and the like are not fair game.
I mean, that’s like me reading, say, a racist comment about one of the players on a Cubs yahoo group, and then coming over here and going off on BCBers that could possibly be doing the same thing. That’s offensive to me, even if I’ve never done it. Take your complaint to the place that it originated, is all I’m saying.
Unless your intention all along was to “call out” the sexism on BCB…..

a big problem on BCB and other blogs ...
is guilt by association. It happens a lot here when someone makes a mildly critical or concern-filled comment and gets trashed because 10 other posters have been saying the sky is falling.

Personally Offensive to YOU
That is the key here, your upset about this and have chosen BCB as a forum for meting out your own personal justice against members of this blog who may or may not have posted on the MLB site. So what? You now get to choose what the line of sexism is? Maybe you should judge people as you want to be judged and leave everyone else alone — or expect to get arguments from many sides.

first off, her comments and vague descriptions on what happens are terrible. her interviews are are exciting as a White Sox game….when a player is joking about something, she has absolutly no clue….is she a good writer? maybe….a good reporter…no…does she know her baseball? doubtful. also her attempt at humor…not so good
the fact is that a lot of people are jealous of her because she has an awesome job. should she? no….if it was Erin Andrews and she was hot, we might be able to forgive her, but you have to wonder who she has incriminating pictures of? My beef with Carrie....
is the same beef I have with “Vine Line”, and that is, too much of a house organ. When I was a kid I subscribed to Vine Line and loved it. But as I got older, I grew to resent to feel good, good-natured attitude of the magazine, particularly when the team was not doing well. When the team is not doing well, you get sick of reading about whose birthday is in the current month, or what one of the bullpen pitchers enjoys most about living in Chicago. Carrie isn’t quite that bland, but I’ll put it this way: I go to Cubs.com for the game recap, the box score, and the video highlights if I was not able to watch the game. Then I immediately come over to BCB for the discussion and opinion forum. Carrie gets zinged here quite a bit, but I have never seen anything overtly sexist. But then again, I haven’t been looking, so maybe I’ve missed something.

What!
You don’t find the monthly cartoon in the letters section to be insightful, humorous and well-drawn? I wait each month with baited breath for the latest edition. I sure miss “Aisle 426” . . . I wonder what Scorecard Whutzhizname and Budman are up to.
Actually, VineLine used to be about 2X as thick with 1/2 the ads. It’s still worth reading (IMO), but it’s a shadow of what it used to be.

I was ok with this post, and I still am with the premise
But for the author of commentary like this thread to call someone a troll in another thread because they didn’t like a joke about trying to actually hurt someone is patently absurd.

To clarify
The person that didn’t like the joke about trying to hurt someone is a Brewer fan, and the author of this post told said Brewer fan that they were a troll.

that way I cannot comment on it. In the pat I have not enjoyed her writing, and found it quite “hokey” and choose to just ignore her.

Man, good thing I stayed away from this post.
Treating people like human beings and with respect should have nothing to do with attractiveness, professional occupation, or team affiliation. I don’t really see the need to talk about this on a baseball blog, simply because those with a heart and a right mind should know this. It has much less to do with baseball (and in particular, us as BCBers), than it does with being a good person.
But, I do hate Joe Morgan.

Sigh.
I don’t even remember what the topic was, but I was discussing with Mizzou fan (nji232) something. He and I josh back and forth (he’s @ MU, I’m @ KU), and we have a pretty good relationship. I don’t recall or rmeember being offensive towards him, and I think (correct me if I’m wrong), you thought I was. I probably could have done without the “hell”, but yeah, him and I joke around a bit, and out of context it can probably look like we are arguing. We weren’t. Sorry if I offended you.

No offense taken, looking back I was just commenting without knowing the context. I was more guilty of stirring up crap than anyone. Sorry if I came off like someone jumping to conclusions (which is kinda what I did).

I too hate Joe Morgan
Sunday night baseball is tough to watch with him bumbling along. I do not understand how he keeps that job. It is painfully obvious that he is a terrible analyst and struggles to get his point across without repeating himself 8 times in a row. You see when he repeats things, trying to explain the instance in a different manner, it really gets to me. Trying to use different variations of sentences in order to explain the topic can be truly frustrating. I do have to change the channel when Joe gets on a roll in speaking on the same issue repeatedly. The action of the game takes a backseat to Morgan’s dumb ramblings and he really should try to contain himself. Ok, I cannot go on with this one…

Another Classic Example
of BCB entertainment. I find it funny that Dfrancon is actually losing sleep over the fact that people are making fun of the Muskat. Last time I looked, the real world is nothing like a Disney movie. Sure there are jerks out there ( myself included), but why get offended of what people write online…Sexist comments or not, Muskat is a writer and because of it she is gonna get ripped; just like every other writer out there. I’m sure she isnt losing sleep over it…so you shouldn’t either.

I'm sorry you find it funny.
Sexist comments are not okay—that’s my point. “Every other” writer doesn’t have sexist comments made about them. But thanks for patronizing me by telling me I shouldn’t lose sleep over it.

FREE THE MUSKRAT!
I have nothing against her personally. Regarding her “journalism prowess” however, sometimes she is misinformed, makes errors in reporting facts, gives opinions that are not fully backed up with stats/facts, and is really just the mouthpiece for the ballclub – which clouds her objectivity.
Other than these things, she is fantastic.

It has nothing to do with the fact she is female
People on this site and many other blogging sites tear apart the subject they are most passionate about, as well as offer a exaggerated amount of praise. The looks of almost every player has been picked apart, hell we even had a post up here critiquing the player photos when they came out for this season.
As far as writers are concerned, I have heard radio host get bashed on this site, Mariotti get bashed, and many stories get critiqued and destroyed. Muskat is not that great, and in my opinion, there should be someone else doing her job, but she is restricted. I personally will stick with the substance, but mocking her looks and what not is something we all do to other writers, or even more so, the players on the team we leave.. is that sexism against men, by men?
Its the same thing as all the hoopla when Barry Bonds got accused of steroids. A lot of people were saying he was scrutinized more because he was black; no folks, its because he is a superstar HR record holder who is on the block for steroids.. not because of the color of his skin, just like the hate on Muskat is NOT BECAUSE SHE IS A WOMAN, it is because she is a no good reporter that opens the door for mockery.

Good luck df
If someone is going to pick on her looks or gender – your posting is not going to make them suddenly say “Wow, I guess that was really childish and chauvinist. Guess I’ll behave now.”
Look, Muskrat is, at best a mediocre writer. Her style is very limited and she is constrained by MLB politics. She’s not the next Dick Young (if you don’t know who that was, its not a joke).
She simply reports and if you don’t like it, do as I do and don’t read it. Look up the scores and stats on MLB.com and move on to something else.
