Carpenter could be back May 23
Slow news day, but considering how well the Cardinals have been doing (third best record behind Dodgers & Blue Jays), it's important to note that our biggest division rival could see their ace returning shortly.
Chris Carpenter was scheduled to throw off a mound today and could return as soon as May 23rd. I'd link to VEB, too, but I don't see any posts from them at the moment. Cubs @ Cardinals 05/19-05/21, and not again until the last series before the all-star break.

More "news" for a slow news day
Check out the Marlin’s starter for tomorrow , JOHN KORONKA. Last pitched for The Rangers in 2007 and washed out after two starts. How soon before Ryan O’Malley starts for the Nats ?

Koronka?
Good heavens, why? The Marlins are a good organization. Don’t they have ANYONE in their system better than Koronka?

Apparently not
The Marlins signed him to a minor league deal in January . He played in Japan last year.

That's weird.
I thought the Marlins had a ton of good pitching in their system. Maybe they just don’t want to rush anyone up.
I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

the Mets
used a 40 year old Rookie to pitch last night.

Yes but he had a long career in Japan
and is a reliever.

Since the end of the 2006 season...
Chris Carpenter has thrown 31 innings. Until he can prove (if he can prove) that he can stay healthy, I’m not the least bit worried about his impact.

I'm a little concerned, but I agree with your point...
He’s yet to show he can stay healthy long enough to matter.

I'm somewhat concerned, too.
Remember, Carpenter didn’t have arm troubles this time around – it was an oblique strain. He was looking pretty damn good before it happened. I don’t like to see the Cards get any more ammunition to defend their current position in the standings.

Oblique strains can be really tough to recover from.
Just ask Ryan Dempster, whose 2006 season was basically ruined as a result of one.

Dempster had a strain in 2006?
Are you sure about that? He pitched 74 games games that season, with 24 saves. I see he went on the DL in 2007 for a brief time with an oblique strain. But he had a pretty good season in 2007 (28 of 31 in save chances).

Maybe it was 2007 when he had the oblique strain.

Either way, I wouldn't say it ruined his season...
as he pitched a lot in 2006, and only missed about a month in 2007 and pitched fine after the injury.

He will return to the DL on May 24
I thought Mark Prior was bad. At least with Prior we didn’t pay a huge pitchers contract while putting up with that crap every season.
Hey the Cubs are good again! This will be a good test of a sig jinx.
