Eckstein hit the ball, and it traveled on the ground until it was fielded by Fontenot. An out was

recorded.

the ball made contact with the bat in the hands of Eckstein. The ball then ws rulled a grounder as it made initial contact with the ground, and traveled in a rolling motion until Fonty fielded the ball, and threw it to first base, which then recordered an out in favor of the Cubs

by northernsails on May 13, 2009 8:47 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

There's no way to prove that

I don’t trust defensive metrics that much, but the metrics don’t love Lee all that much. Gonzales won the Gold Glove last year, so at least some people think he’s good at defense. That suggests they’re at least in the same league.

by aldimond on May 13, 2009 8:47 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

A number of people have been given Gold Gloves

who haven’t had great defensive numbers. It’s a popularity contest.

by northernsails on May 13, 2009 8:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Popularity contest?

Who would be likely to benefit from a popularity contest in gold glove voting? Not Adrian Gonzales, who is relatively unknown compared to other NL first basemen and played for an awful team last year. Lee, Pujols, and Berkman would be more likely to benefit.

And defensive numbers are pretty primitive, especially for first basemen and catchers; making outs on balls hit to them is just part of what they do, so they don’t fit the models that the metrics are based on. I think the burden of proof would be on someone trying to prove they have very different defensive ability.

by aldimond on May 13, 2009 8:55 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Your argument is well-intentioned

but lacks some reasoning. Gonzalez has EVERY reason to be recognized by a popularity contest if he’s unknown. Being recognized means more money in his next contract, for the very least of reasons.

by northernsails on May 13, 2009 8:57 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The contest isn't decided by the player

It’s decided by the voters (sportswriters I think). Popularity contest awards are won by players that are already popular. That’s the meaning of the term.

Wow

Giles lines it to Lee at knee height, Lee makes the catch! Three good solid outs!

Ach!

You can’t prove much of anything in baseball on the basis of one play. It’s about how you do on a sustained basis.

Yes, Derrek Lee is good at defense (IMHO, and in that of many others). Apparently lots of writers think Gonzales is, too! We may be in for an entertaining display of great defense in the right corner of the infield! Let’s stop making poorly grounded, compative arguments and enjoy some baseball!
