Will he or won't he?

I’m just throwing this out, not saying it’s going to happen or anything. What Theriot is doing reminds me of the young Sandberg, my favorite Cub. I hope he keeps this up. Biggest surprise of the season so far.

This is only the beginning....Lou Pinella end of '07 season and Chicago Transit Authority (the band when they were really good).

The difference, of course, is...

… that Sandberg had his breakout year at age 24. Theriot is 29. But maybe he’ll have that one great year that we’ll always remember.

It's just so similar.

Jim Frey talked to Sandberg about lifting the ball and hitting for power; Lou talks to Theriot and he does the same thing. If Theriot ends with 20-25 HR it will be a breakout season. I don’t see him hitting 40 like Ryno did in his MVP season!

I'd settle for...

… Theriot having 30 doubles and maybe 10 homers, assuming he can keep his average around .300. If he can do that he’s a real useful player.

Definitely.

That would be fantastic.

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

Not to nitpick

but if Theriot finishes with 20-25 homers, he will hit more than Sandberg did in his MVP season – Ryno hit only 19 homers, but added 36 doubles and 19 triples.

When Sandberg had 40 homeruns in 1990, he finished 4th in MVP voting.

I'd love to be wrong...

…but I simply cannot envision Theriot hitting 20 to 25 home runs – ever. I’m still worried he’ll be worn out by August with the lack of a viable SS backup.

He's been smashing

He almost hit another today!

Theriot is a leader.

I know it sounds funny to call him a leader, but I think by example he is. Offensively, the tandem of The Riot, Dome, Sori, and Hoff has pretty much carried the offense so far. Odd that the four most fan-polarizing players would be the ones getting it done.

The Cubs were going through a rough patch there for a while, but still practically every time I turned on my TV, Ryan Theriot was on base. He’s persistent as hell, he usually gives you a good at-bat, he’s stealing bases, and now, he added a little power for good measure. I’ll accept the defense if his offense is the trade-off.

I still get nervous when he attempts a stolen base

It’ll take a few more SB before I trust his base stealing ability. But as for his offense overall I have been impressed.

"That's what you live for. You live for the opportunity and when that day comes, you better be ready," Soto said. "I tried to make sure that whenever they gave me a chance, I was ready and I knew I had to take advantage of the opportunity."

Well, Next Year is here .. and Jack's century's gotta end some time .. GO CUBBIES!
