They need to do something about that patent.
I have tried three times to read that article and it has crashed my browser all three times.

Al has been blacked out from the black out patent
baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out

I finally got the article to stop blacking me out.
Boasting about cutting off your customers. That has to be about the worst business practice I can imagine.

Oh brah-vo, MLB. Brah-freakin'-vo.
I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

I know we're not suppose to discuss illegal activities on this website...
…but you can’t feel bad for MLB’s fight against pirate websites when you see articles like this.

The patent isn't for the policy, of course
but rather for technology that would allow it to be enforced on a mobile phone, which means that they are nearing MLB.tv for iPhones.

Dupay
In the Passan columns Dupay was fairly sympathetic about blackouts. In this article he is front and center defending them. It wouldn’t surprise me if there never really was any kind of discussion on ending blackouts.
Yes Josh Its true its the technology not the actual ‘policy’ that is patended but its just another brick in the wall of them going with this blackout policy instead of being reasonable.

They moved this headline to the press release section with comments disabled.
You cannot even find the story on mlb.com now without clicking on the “official releases” section, and the comments are not enabled because if you notice, the original story does allow comments and almost all of the comments are negative. The new story with comments disabled can be found here.

I'm utterly speechless after reading that.
Bill Wirtz is dead now. MLB, you can throw out those notes he sent you about how to alienate as much of your fanbase as possible.

Not to worry!
“A system and method relates to limiting the presentation of rules based events based on the geographic location of computer users attempting to view the rules based event via a network. The method includes receiving over a network a request to view a rules based event at a computer, obtaining a first estimate of geographic location of the computer where the first estimate of geographic location includes a first confidence determination, and obtaining a second estimate of geographic location of the computer if the first confidence determination is less than an established confidence level. The first and second estimates of geographic location define a composite estimated geographic location of the computer. The method further includes retrieving information on a geographic location of the rules based event, comparing the retrieved information on the geographic location of the rules based event, with the composite estimated geographic location of the computer, and providing access to the rules based event based on access rules and the comparison of the retrieved information on the geographic location of the rules based event and the estimated geographic location of the computer. The system and method can also apply to promotions, sweepstakes, contests, fantasy games, sale of goods and/or services, and targeted advertising.”
