pathetic ass bullpen

i could really do without the booing
I may be beating a horse than was killed in the last thread, but geez. Relax.
99% of the time I agree
but Gregg deserved it. That was putrid.

He never had a day like that.
Even in his worst game, the blister blown save vs. STL, he got 2 outs. And only gave up 3.
5 ER in 0 IP is unacceptable, even once.
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
Not acceptable
but losing my mind over it doesn’t seem to make sense to me.
gregg has games when he sucks. today was one. we pulled out the win.
I am polly anna with this team
That deserved to be booed. That was awful.
Believe or Leave ~Cubswynn 9/9/2008
That was a booable offense
while still understanding closers will blow up like that from time to time.

Can we please
ship Heilman back to the Mets? He did such a fine job for them last year….
"One thing you learned as a Cubs fan: when you bought you ticket, you could bank on seeing the bottom of the ninth."
They probably wouldn't take him unless we threw in Marmol.
He wore out some welcomes in the big apple.
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
Where's Kerry?
"One thing you learned as a Cubs fan: when you bought you ticket, you could bank on seeing the bottom of the ninth."
In Cleveland, b/c of our gutless front office.
We can’t offer arbitration, because what if he accepts! We might owe $10M for 1 year to a local hero who had an awesome year last year for us in a position of great need, who remains remarkably tradeable!
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
You mean...
… the guy in Cleveland with a 6.00 ERA and 13 hits and vie walks in 12.0 innings? That Kerry?
Get over it. He’s gone, and the Cubs don’t need him.
Ladies and gentlemen! It's 1985 all over again, but this time the offense goes to hell!
I'm not nuts about this logic.
Cleveland has been a pretty crappy team, but Wood has only allowed runs in 4 of 13 appearances this year.
One of those was 1 run allowed in an opening day blowout loss;
Another of those was a Kerry Wood save;
and one of them was a 2-run blown save (his only blown save of the year), which the Indians wound up winning.
His only truly “bad” appearance was allowing a 3-run HR to Jason Bay in a 0-0 game to lose to the Red Sox a few weeks back.
But seriously, he’s been more good than bad. And even more seriously, the guy was a Cub from age 18 through age 32…. frankly, he is a Cub for life. He would and should be a Cub this year if our GM had only offered arbitration, and we shouldn’t be ragging on him as if he was some mercenary we used for half a season and cast off.
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
Neither is Ernie Banks or Ryne Sandberg.
Would you have accepted throwing Ronnie Santo under the bus during his final half-season on the South Side?
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
I wasn't alive then
I really have no idea.
But I don’t think saying “he’s not here anymore and he hasn’t torn it up in CLE” = throwing under the bus.
But whatever.
BCB 1974
CubsToSeriesby70: Carmen Fanzone stinks! Why did we trade Santo again?
RickMondaysOtherWife: You mean that guy hitting .221 for the Sux? That Santo? He’s not a Cub anymore. Get over it. He’s gone and the Cubs don’t need him.
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
But he is gone
I’m a Cub fan. And I wish Woody nothing but the best… but he is gone. I’d love if he weren’t… but he is. So you get over it.

My dad always used to iron during Bulls playoff games
during the championship years in the 90s.
So you’ve gotta get the laundry done first and iron during the game.
I think your being
a little unfair on heilman.
he only gave up one single which was inside according to gameday.

In the last meltdown remotely equal to this — last year’s “first Harden game, Marmol blows 7 run lead” game, Marshall got the GW RBI when no one else could hit.

Yeah...
Heilman gave up a walk and a hit and got 2 outs. Not great but not terrible. I put it mostly on Gregg here

you’re lucky to come out unscathed.

Actually it wasn't even a blown save
But what a blow up

It wasn't a blown save, he came in 4 runs up
Also, he’s just not lights out. He can’t be counted on to win with a lead in the ninth. That is troubling.

That's what I always thought. His stuff doesn't appear to be as good as it should be for a closer.
"I'm not much of a chemistry guy, you know. Chemistry to me is a pinch-hit double with the bases loaded"--Jim Frey, Chicago Tribune, 1985.
So if he shuts it down in the ninth
eight or nine times in a row, then blows it once, that means he can’t be counted on in the ninth?
Odd logic, that.

To this day I stick by the theory that....
closers in non-closing situations suck. They need the rush. THey need the energy. They want to pad that save total. He has been in with a 4 run lead or more in the ninth, the last 3 out of 4 times. Closers hate that.

But, I’ll take it!!!!!!!!!!!
forcing him to make that throw
is the right move. a right-handed thrower running to his left…that is a hard to play to make
And Pence is terrible on D
I’d challenge him 10 out of 10 times in that situation.

This is the 4th MLB team to make the same mistake — “LaTroy is pitching some great 8th innings for us! Let’s make him the 9th inning guy!”
LaTroy Hawkins is living, breathing proof that actual closers have value, and that some pitchers, while effective in other situations, cannot pitch in the 9th.

I wasn’t too nervous about this one either. A lot of fans need to realize that Lou knows what he’s doing. I’m glad that Lou gave that know-it-all behind the dugout the “what’s for” near the end of the game. Some of these fans need to remember that our manager is Lou freakin’ Piniella for goodness sake.

How do the Cubs expect to win down the stretch...
…or in October, for that matter, with these clowns in the bullpen?
"I always tell the truth -- Even when I lie"
They'll probably make a deal for better clowns before the trade deadline.
Well, I hope so, at least.

Marmol looked lights out today!
Struck out the side in the 8th

Guz did his job in the 7th, as well.

Yes, let's keep him
But who can we make deals for?

This game
Was very similar to this game. Played out in similar fashion, and Soriano also came through in that one..

If there were *ever* a time for official scorer intervention, that was it.
Giving Howry that win was obnoxious. He allowed both inherited runners to score, and tacked on 3 more earned runs of his own!

All right, y'all
Bit of a nail-biter there, but a W is a W. I’m gonna head to East Atlanta and get my drink on.
Go Cubs!

Let's keep in mind that Lou made the right managerial moves in the bottom of the 9th...
AND THAT THE CUBS WON THIS GAME!

Ok but the ones in the top of the 9th are suspect.

Gregg had an off day, what are ya gonna do?
And three good hitters for the Astros started the mess in the first place. What, ya think Fat Elvis, El Cabao, and Miggy are gonna be held down all day? I know you don’t like Lou though, so I’m not surprised you feel this way…

I'm heading out too.
Going to meet the parents for dinner and “Angels and Demons.” Anyone got a review for me?

Trib says "one of the most tedious and boring movies of all time."
I’m sure it’s not that bad.

Yeah.

Davinci code was pretty bad
so I suspect that A&D isn’t any better.

Coming in late
It’s pretty amusing to see Gregg give up 4 runs and no outs recorded, while Heilman gets the blown save for giving up no runs.

The oddities of baseball.
Also, Marshall gets the make-up win for his scratched start yesterday, and he only got one out.

cubs
the cubs cant always make it look it easy. we all know that. but gregg was disgracefull. i hope lou does not stick with this guy through thick and thin.
I still wonder
if Lou isn’t punishing Marmol for going to the WBC instead of staying home like Lou wanted him too. I like Marmol as a closer. (Or more precisely, I like Marmol better than Gregg as our closer).
