I can't believe we've only scored 3 runs off Brian Moehler.

Just not this inning.
We’ll get ’em in the 7th.

Wings 0-2 on the power play today...
They’ve only failed on 2 power plays all postseason so nice PK Hawks!

Really the bullpen is not that bad
and why the F)(*^%^% wasn’t Guzman in there. He threw 10 pitches yesterday , his first appearance in 3 games and tomorrow is a day off. Guys like Ascanio should be used in mop up situations until you know what they have.

not bad eh?
did you see our “closer” yesterday?
Did you see the Astros help us today?
First pitch is always a ball.
I believe the bullpen leads the league in Walks as well.
Drive, Monkey Drive!
they are not that good
however, I do see hope.
Guzman has electric stuff
Marmol is coming around
Wells and Marshall are both serviceable as long relief
Drive, Monkey Drive!
It's a mixed bag
The good: Guzman, Marmol, Marshall,* Wells
The meh: Heilman, Gregg
The bad: Cotts, Ascanio, Patton
The good is awesome, obviously, the problem is more than half the guys we have up there aren’t good at all/inspire no confidence. Does anyone here cheer when Patton is up?
We need another solid arm.
*Marshall is starred because I can’t figure out if his long term plan is pen or rotation.
Believe or Leave ~Cubswynn 9/9/2008
Too early on Ascanio
Though I would be inclined to send him down and keep Wells. I think Cotts should be released. I can’t see any value there.
Point is in THIS game Lou had a MUCH better option for the 7th ( Guzman) and didn’t take it. When you have to get someone in earlier or on less rest it is harder but today was in my opinion a mistake,

You never know until you try
I believe Lou used Ascanio in a low-stress situation earlier. He probably wanted to see what he could do in a closer game.
And he has to keep an eye on Guzman, too.
by Not Bruce Froemming on May 17, 2009 3:44 PM CDT up reply actions
He was used once in mop up
I think you need a little more than that to check guy out and again you so clearly had a good rested pitcher for the
situation so it seems a bad move to me.

by Doggie Stalker on May 17, 2009 3:47 PM CDT up reply actions
The point is HOW you use the bullpen
Heilman is LONG relief and he gets rushed in to get out of some jam and get a batter out. Marmol is often used till his arm falls off
and guys who should be used in mop up ( Cotts Ascanio) until they prove reliable are thrown in to crucial situations.

by Doggie Stalker on May 17, 2009 3:34 PM CDT up reply actions
all valid points
until the bullpen is used right, it is not that good.
Cotts has not stepped up yet, and it is mid May.
I agree, Marmol is leaned on heavily, but when he is the most reliable, what are you going to do? Run Gregg out there?
Drive, Monkey Drive!
gregg said yesterday
It wasn’t a save situation. So that means he can go in and stink it up?
Drive, Monkey Drive!
That annoyed me so much.
Not a save situation, so you’ll try to lose the game? That makes as much sense as “clogging the bases.”

I'm thinking
he’s going to see what he has in the minors before he makes any sort of deals.
Once Zambrano comes back, presumably Wells goes to the pen. That’ll help. I suspect Stevens will get a couple of shots, too.

I am just really frustrated by the Pen this year, and am getting nervous. We’re (going to be) 6 games over .500 after this and have to do something or we could very well wind up 3rd behind the Cards/Brew Crew.

i hate all losses, but this one would be especially sour
considering how stupid everything about Ascanio and the decision to put him in was
A 4-1 homestand
would be just fine by me. But this game isn’t quite over yet.
by Not Bruce Froemming on May 17, 2009 3:39 PM CDT up reply actions
Not to mention only scoring three runs on the awful Brian Moeller.
After the first two runs scored the Cubs had runners on 2nd and 3rd with no out and failed to tack on any extra runs. Today is not just on the pitching.
by Acapulco Taco Pie on May 17, 2009 3:40 PM CDT up reply actions
If any team ever needed an additional position player, it's this one.
The Cubs have two utility players who can’t play 3B, one of whom also can’t play SS. They have their star 3B out, and a backup 3B who was previously the starting 2B.
If the choice is really down to “Ascanio on the roster” vs. “true backup SS on the roster”, it should be a pretty easy decision.
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
I don't disagree with you, there really isn't a backup at short.
I don’t have a problem with them giving Ascanio a look now because they need to find out if he can help them later on. I also think overall they’ve weathered Aramis’ loss pretty well.
by Acapulco Taco Pie on May 17, 2009 3:42 PM CDT up reply actions
Sure - but you can't leave yourself in a "Fukudome at SS/Koyie at 3B situation"
The roster imbalance is made worse by the fact that Fontenot is basically taking an o-fer the season against lefties, and Lou can’t really do anything about it.

We still have Hoffpauir on the bench, if the situation arises.
Of course, that means that the bullpen needs to avoid this turning into a blowout, which is more or less a 50-50 shot at this point.

Two men on in the 8th last chance for a big hit possibly – then you bring in Miles at 2B and move Scales to 3B.

Really, really disappointed in the lack of a Hoffpauir PH there.
There’s no guarantee that anyone’s going to get on base in front of Hoff the 9th to make a PH worthwhile, and even if someone does, it’s back to the top of the order anyway.
So now we get, presumably, Hoff PHing to lead off the 9th down 3, instead of batting with 2 runners on and 1 out in the 8th, down 3.
