Really the bullpen is not that bad

and why the F)(*^%^% wasn’t Guzman in there. He threw 10 pitches yesterday , his first appearance in 3 games and tomorrow is a day off. Guys like Ascanio should be used in mop up situations until you know what they have.

Wells and Marshall are both serviceable as long relief

Drive, Monkey Drive!

by VegasCubFan on May 17, 2009 3:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's a mixed bag

The good: Guzman, Marmol, Marshall,* Wells
The meh: Heilman, Gregg
The bad: Cotts, Ascanio, Patton

The good is awesome, obviously, the problem is more than half the guys we have up there aren’t good at all/inspire no confidence. Does anyone here cheer when Patton is up?

We need another solid arm.

*Marshall is starred because I can’t figure out if his long term plan is pen or rotation.

Too early on Ascanio

Though I would be inclined to send him down and keep Wells. I think Cotts should be released. I can’t see any value there.
Point is in THIS game Lou had a MUCH better option for the 7th ( Guzman) and didn’t take it. When you have to get someone in earlier or on less rest it is harder but today was in my opinion a mistake,

You never know until you try

I believe Lou used Ascanio in a low-stress situation earlier. He probably wanted to see what he could do in a closer game.

And he has to keep an eye on Guzman, too.

by Not Bruce Froemming on May 17, 2009 3:44 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He was used once in mop up

I think you need a little more than that to check guy out and again you so clearly had a good rested pitcher for the
situation so it seems a bad move to me.

by slcathena on May 17, 2009 3:55 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The point is HOW you use the bullpen

Heilman is LONG relief and he gets rushed in to get out of some jam and get a batter out. Marmol is often used till his arm falls off
and guys who should be used in mop up ( Cotts Ascanio) until they prove reliable are thrown in to crucial situations.

by Doggie Stalker on May 17, 2009 3:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

all valid points

until the bullpen is used right, it is not that good.
Cotts has not stepped up yet, and it is mid May.
I agree, Marmol is leaned on heavily, but when he is the most reliable, what are you going to do? Run Gregg out there?

Not to mention only scoring three runs on the awful Brian Moeller.

After the first two runs scored the Cubs had runners on 2nd and 3rd with no out and failed to tack on any extra runs. Today is not just on the pitching.

by Acapulco Taco Pie on May 17, 2009 3:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

If any team ever needed an additional position player, it's this one.

The Cubs have two utility players who can’t play 3B, one of whom also can’t play SS. They have their star 3B out, and a backup 3B who was previously the starting 2B.

If the choice is really down to “Ascanio on the roster” vs. “true backup SS on the roster”, it should be a pretty easy decision.

MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown

by D98 on May 17, 2009 3:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't disagree with you, there really isn't a backup at short.

I don’t have a problem with them giving Ascanio a look now because they need to find out if he can help them later on. I also think overall they’ve weathered Aramis’ loss pretty well.

by Acapulco Taco Pie on May 17, 2009 3:42 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sure - but you can't leave yourself in a "Fukudome at SS/Koyie at 3B situation"

The roster imbalance is made worse by the fact that Fontenot is basically taking an o-fer the season against lefties, and Lou can’t really do anything about it.

MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown

by D98 on May 17, 2009 3:45 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

We still have Hoffpauir on the bench, if the situation arises.

Of course, that means that the bullpen needs to avoid this turning into a blowout, which is more or less a 50-50 shot at this point.

Odd pitching change.

Don’t they have a lefty to face Fontenot?

FC. Still first and second. Now two outs. Scales up.

Yeah. That's what I thought, but then WGN had the peeps on 1st and 2nd so I changed it.

My bad, I guess, for depending on WGN.

I hope Fonty can come through, but why not Hoff here?

Well, never mind. Point stands. Why not Hoff to bat for Fontenot?

Two men on in the 8th last chance for a big hit possibly – then you bring in Miles at 2B and move Scales to 3B.

Given the offensive upgrade, it's worth Scales at 3B.

Fontenot is going on 2 weeks with 1 hit to show for it. He has no business taking the most important AB of the game so far.

Really, really disappointed in the lack of a Hoffpauir PH there.

There’s no guarantee that anyone’s going to get on base in front of Hoff the 9th to make a PH worthwhile, and even if someone does, it’s back to the top of the order anyway.

So now we get, presumably, Hoff PHing to lead off the 9th down 3, instead of batting with 2 runners on and 1 out in the 8th, down 3.

I have family near Brisbane....

and have been there to visit them back in ‘96. It’s tough when you are separated by that much distance.

yeah, on the flight down...

I got claustrophobia for a bit, for the first and only time in my life anywhere. I woke up after four hours sleep thinking we were close and freaked when I realized we had nine more hours.

I’ll be back one day. It’s a great place.
