Z's Rehab start
looks like its off to rough start, through 1 inning he has allowed 2 runs, 2 walks, and 3 hits. Not sure how important the results are in terms of him being activated for next Friday, hopefully he can have a couple good inning after this. Given Wells performance so far, might be advisable to let him get in two starts rather then rush him back before he is sharp. Thoughts?

Z retired them in order, good to see.

and if you go here
you can follow the play-by-play.
Zambrano walked the first two batters he faced (a little overexcited, perhaps?). Daytona failed to turn 2 double plays that would have prevented runners from scoring (they both scored on singles) – now I don’t know how well the balls were hit, but presumably Zambrano could have gotten out of the 1st with 0 or 1 runs in the inning.

I hope it goes well
but this is EXACTLY why I did not want Wells sent down. You need to be as sure as you can that Z is back before you send Wells down since he would not be able to come right back.

Wells won't be sent down.
Ascanio will, especially after today.

Really?
Wells has pitched very well and has earned the right to stay, whether as a starter or reliever.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Wells stays in the rotation with Marshall going to the pen. Marshall obviously doesn’t deserve to lose his slot but they need lefty.

Ascanio was trying his hardest to get sent down with that performance.

yeah, based on tis , I wouldn't mind see him getting one more start down on the farm
I’m sure Z won’t want to do it though

How did I know this would happen?
How did I know everyone would overreact over a minor league rehab start?

calm down, who is overreacting
you think its not possible he might need one more start to get sharp?

You're right
What he did is a good thing and we should start him tomorrow

If he's physically ready to pitch in the majors, he'll be back up

But...
There should be a little concern about being lit up by some minor league bats. Guys who aren’t MLB ready and have never seen him pitch before.

guys he has never seen befoer
and likely Z was not mixing pitches as much as he will up here. he likely went out, threw 30 fast balls, 30 curves, then sat (so to speak) which is common on a rehab start (or first ST start)

Why?
I doubt he was doing anything more than focusing on his mechanics and making sure he felt ready. He doesn’t need to earn his way back to the rotation.

Exactly.
I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

Never, never, never
judge a pitcher’s rehab appearance by the numbers of runs he allowed. Pitchers on rehab assignments are not trying to get batters out. Believe me, they’re not. They’re working on their pitches and seeing if they are pain free. Sometimes they’ll throw the same pitch in the same location many times in a row. Any minor leaguer can hit it if they know what’s coming.
The number of walks are a little worrisome, but if the Big Z said he felt well and felt his pitches were doing what he wanted them to do, there is no need to pay any attention to this.

Same is true in Spring Training
I remember just freaking out at a Maddux spring training start but he was fine when the season started. A lot of pitchers like to test things out in Spring Training and the veterans know they don’t have to worry about a roster spot.
