If I recall, I posted a word of caution yesterday

I posted a cautionary line last night….ah, here it is

An earlier post mentions the ‘weak’ Padres…they haven’t lost since they were chewed out by Bud Black In Chicago. Winning 6 in a row at Petco, sweeping the Reds and the Giants.

Beware…..since this is 1984 celebration weekend, it might get nasty.

I am attending one game and would not be caught near the Park Saturday, the ‘official’ day. (Thankfully, I work) I choose not to attend Sunday, I have another project to finish.

This isn’t a great weekend to be a Cubs fan in SD. But I do want to see Z against Peavy, even if it’s a loss. I’ve seen enough losses here, so what’s another…

Frustration is an excuse to trash your team?

I don’t get people here. The team or a player struggles and you just crap on them. I bet you’re the same idiot boo-birds that inhabit Wrigley. Jesus, what kind of fan ditches their team when things get tough?

I live in St. Louis. Busch is packed no matter what.

by Mike Martin on May 22, 2009 11:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Me too

And I’m a Cardinals fan. The last couple series last year were pretty slim on the crowd – but yes, generally, Busch is packed. I was getting tickets to the last series vs. the d-bags for a few bucks.

by rencelas on May 22, 2009 11:26 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Cubs series sold out. Brewer series was close. Not sure what you’re talking about there.

I did the first pitch tickets to the Royals today. Boring game until the late innings. :)

by Mike Martin on May 22, 2009 11:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh, early season, or when in contention, it’s ridiculous around here. Later on, if the Cards are out of it, attendance does drop off. (not to Florida levels, but not sold out).

by rencelas on May 22, 2009 11:31 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

See, but still. The ballpark may not sell out, but the fans don’t start trashing players. I mean, this Kalil Greene thing has struck me as odd on many different levels, but typically you’ll see Cards fans want TLR to move a struggling player down in the line up, not trade him away.

by Mike Martin on May 22, 2009 11:38 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agree on that entirely.

Cub fans, especially casual ones, get very, very violent about things. It’s unbelievable.

I’ve heard some boos at Busch, but nothing like the ones at Wrigley. I think there’s just a certain group at Wrigley who I would classify as giant douchebags.

by rencelas on May 22, 2009 11:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Very few real Cubs fan go to Wrigley anymore.

It’s a sad story.

by Mike Martin on May 22, 2009 11:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Too damn expensive

I lived in Chicago for a year – I couldn’t afford to compete with the suburban rich kids who bought tickets with mommy and daddy’s money to get wasted and be dicks on the red line. (not that I’m bitter)

by rencelas on May 22, 2009 11:42 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

And that’s one thing I like about the Lou. First Pitch tickets are an amazing deal, even if you only get SRO. Plus all the other ticket deals, for someone like me who just loves baseball, it means I spend too much time at Busch.

by Mike Martin on May 22, 2009 11:45 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agree

When I work from home I grab the first pitch tickets a lot. $11 is crazy, and I’ve sat in the 100 level a couple times with them. Big thumbs up.

The problem with Cubs fans

and it isn’t entirely their fault, is that normal fluctuations during a season are taken as a sign that it’s over for them. They’ve been burned a lot, so it’s easy to see.

by Not Bruce Froemming on May 22, 2009 11:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh slam the managment all you want. But just slamming a slumping player and talking about how much your team sucks when they hit a rough stretch is ridiculous. Everyone is going to lose 50, and sometimes they’ll come like this.

by Mike Martin on May 22, 2009 11:31 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

This team is awful, in terms of construction.

hendry failed rather spectacularly, and if this season means his job, his successor has a tough job ahead. The big contracts on this team are set to get even bigger.

They need to get better in the player development department

I’m sick of seeing other teams in the Central bring up superstars (Braun, Pujols, etc.)

by Mapmaker on May 22, 2009 11:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

We had pitchers lined up for days, but traded most away.

As far as the Cardinals go, they have so much talent in their farm system they’ll be competitive for years to come.

by Mike Martin on May 22, 2009 11:42 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Brewers too

But that comes from many years of high draft picks

by Mapmaker on May 22, 2009 11:44 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Pujols was a fluke

No doubt about that one. 13th round draft pick? Ridiculous.

Still, the Cubs have a crap farm system. One of the blogs rated them somewhere around 28th in MLB.

by rencelas on May 22, 2009 11:44 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Spending is irrelevant.

Hendry has spent like a drunken sailor. As GM, he and his staff are charged with making the right moves – be they trades, free agent acquisitions, player development & promotion, whatever – and they have simply screwed the pooch this year (as of now). I hope as much as anyone that it turns around.

I’ve been a Cub fan since the early 70’s and I never remember a streak like this. I mean, sure we lost games, etc., but this might be the most anemic I’ve ever seen the Cubs’ offense over a period of time.

No, it's only 10

The LOB column in gameday doesn’t only count 2 out LOB. Otherwise there would have been bases loaded in every inning so far.

by Mike Martin on May 22, 2009 11:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

our hitters feasted

on subpar pitching most of the season. billingsley and lowe, unfortunately, weren’t subpar. i don’t care what the numbers were during the regular season. the fact is, they got dominated in the playoffs. the “we went cold at the wrong time” works the first time it happens but after the second consecutive season, you begin to think that this cast perhaps isn’t up to the job. i don’t know. i hope they are, but i have eyes.

all I’m concerned about is going to the WS. They never have in my life, and after the terrible job JH did this off season, I have no reason to believe they’re going this year. I don’t care if they win 116 games, as Lou has already done once in his career.

Lee is a below average hitter now, and all he provides is defense.

"likely won't" is big talk.

How can you possibly say that? First off, when Aram got hurt for the Pirates, it took a while for his power to return. Secondly, this is a reinjury, which can be trickier. Thirdly, he’s older now.

It’s ridiculous to say with any certainty how aramis is going to rebound. I’m not the one speculating.
