120 games left: what I'd do

After our current 7 game losing streak, we sit at 21-21 with 120 games left, and only 4.5 games behind the Brewers pending tonight's game. While I am not one of the many "ledge jumpers" here, I do think some changes need to be made, and here's what I'd do to try and help improve this team.

1) David Patton.  I was really rooting for this guy, but he really doesn't have a spot on this roster. He hasn't pitched in nearly two weeks, and therefore he is just taking up a roster spot. Considering our offensive woes, I think this would be a good time to call up Jake Fox, who is tearing the cover off the ball in AAA.

2) Neal Cotts. Yes, he did throw a 1-2-3 inning today, but it was a blowout game. In pressure situations, and against lefties specifically, he has not come through this year. I don't trust him to get that big out that a LOOGY is called upon to get, and I'd like to see Jason Wadell called up to be given a chance.

3) Aramis Ramirez. While Rammy is out, I don't like our lineup's chances with Miles/Fontenot/Scales. As a matter of fact, Bobby Scales has shown the best at bats of the three, and he would seemingly be the first one out. Aaron Miles has to go, period. He provides essentially no value to this team right now. I have read, and it was poster here last week, that Cleveland might be shopping DeRo. Let's work some magic to get him back. As Al posted earlier, his 30 RBI's would be leading the team right now. Plugging him in at 3B and allowing Scales and Fontenot to platoon at 2B would improve this roster dramatically.

4) Carlos Marmol. Marmol should be this team's closer. Kevin Gregg has been hit hard consistently this year, and while Marmol has shown control issues in the past, his stuff is untouchable when he finds it. He's the ideal closer type, and his time is due.

5) Koyie Hill. Hill, when given the chance to play, has done nothing but hit. I love Geo (he's my favorite Cub, in fact), and he plays great defense and calls a hell of a game behind the plate. Hill, however, is more than sufficient behind the plate, and I think if he were to be given more playing time it would be nothing but helpful to him, Geo, and the rest of the team. Geo, as great as he is, is a second year player, and I fear that he feels his position is safe after his ROY campaign. Healthy competition is sometimes the best motivational tool you can give a player, and I'd just like to see this explored a bit more.

As always, I'd love to hear your thoughts. 120 games left, 5 (at most) to make up. It's not time to panic, but it is time to analyze what has happened and make the necessary adjustments!

You trust Kevin Gregg at this point?

His opinion is not uninformed.

it’s his opinion, and frankly I agree with him. Even if I didn’t, I’d respect it because I am no better than him. And you, sir, are no better either, so please stop acting as if you are.

Nbf thinks he's an authority figure.

Ironically, he is universally ignored and consistently incorrect.

So you are calling anyone who doesn't have faith in Kevin Gregg an idiot? Tell

me you are not going to hitch your star to his wagon. Do you really feel that his performance so far warrants blind faith? Please tell me that you have something more, Lieutenant. These two Marines are on trial for their lives. Please tell me their lawyer hasn’t pinned their hopes to a phone bill.

Sounds like the complaints about Gregg

are no different than the complaints about Wood at this time last year.

by Not Bruce Froemming on May 24, 2009 10:27 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

On this one I agree with you

Kevin Gregg, while not exactly Mariano Rivera, is doing a decent job as closer-I don’t see th eneed to change that right now.

Quite frankly, who closes is the least of our problems right now.

by bluekoolaide on May 24, 2009 11:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You are making things up

Go take a look at Wood’s gamelogs before you spout off. He had a 3.5 era, and was generally dominant at this time last year.

It must be easy to debate when facts are so malleable.

Gregg

I, too, think Gregg has been fine after a rough start. He not the source of their problems, not by a long shot. If Saint Kerry was still the closer the team would not be any better off, of that I am sure.

No one cares.

You are not an authority, and are wrong more consistently than any other poster. Heck, yesterday you called Al Yellon “hyperbolic” in criticising the team. Why don’t you take a few weeks off, Champ.

by D98 on May 24, 2009 11:46 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why don't you take

a few days off from life, Jackass?

Al was hyperbolic. Saying, essentially, that the Cubs miss Mark DeRosa more than they missed Greg Maddux … well, what do you make of that?

STOP THE NAMECALLING, NOW!

"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra

by Al on May 25, 2009 4:19 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The obvious response is that Al never said that.

He said that Mark DeRosa could be a difference-maker for the 2009 Cubs, in a way that Greg Maddux could not have been for the awful 1993 Cubs.

One of these teams needs a good player to fill some needs and put them over the hump. The other was a 4th place squad that was counting on contributions from Rey Sanchez, Candy Maldonado, and the 37-year-old Willie Wilson.

The ‘93 Cubs’ rotation was Jose Guzman, Mike Morgan, Greg Hibbard, Frank Castillo, and Mike Harkey. Maddux couldn’t have saved that particular team, and that’s what Al posited.

You, of course, purportedly believed that Al was saying “Losing Mark DeRosa in 2009 is worse than losing Greg Maddux in 1993, even now that we retrospectively know that Maddux was going to embark on the greatest 10 years of pitching in MLB history.”

I say “puportedly”, because there is absolutely no chance that you actually believed that was what Al was saying. You just want to cram words in other people’s mouths because you are losing about 10 arguments, simultaneously, on the merits.

Funny thing about this week

With the exception of today with the great pitching we’ve had there’s no reason why this couldn’t have been an 11 game winning streak.

by ak123 on May 24, 2009 9:06 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Except

for us averaging less than a run a game. But I know what you mean.

DEJESUS!!!

by tomas21 on May 24, 2009 9:41 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly why there's no reason

Because they shouldn’t be averaging less than a run a game. I’ll give credit to some pitchers having a good game but there were other pitchers that we made look really good too.

by ak123 on May 24, 2009 10:00 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think

Dan Uggla might be an option if DeRosa isn’t. He probably isn’t as versatile as DeRo, but has more power and could add some young star power.

Also, I think adding a starter such as Peavy could strengthen the bullpen. Harden might hold up better as an 8th or 9th inning guy, so if we added a starter it might end up making the bullpen better.

DEJESUS!!!

This needs to be talked about...

We are in an extremely lucky situation, being 21- 21 and only being four games out. Jim Hendry and Lou ( who isn’t loosing faith in him?) Pinnella need to take this and not say “hey were only four out, we will break out of this slump” but go out and undo the recking ball that took two leaders out of the clubhouse and replaced them with two players that play the game with no confiedence ie (Gregg, Bradley). I posted a week ago that the least fritening three headed monster in baseball will not be an aqeduate solution at 2nd and 3rd. I agree Miles and Cotts serve no purpose on this team. What does Jim honestly think he is gonna get out of them. Another discouraging thing is how reluctant Jim is to bring up minor leaguers that are on a tare. ie (Fox, Wadell) Doesn’t Jim realize that Bobby Scales has represented hope and energy the last 3 weeks? This is almost Dusty Baker / Nefii Perez like, and it makes me sick. Salavage this season now while it can still be saved Jim! this is your last warning! Get On The Dam Phone!!!!

SOME VERY GOOD POINTS......

Not sure if they can see the forest thru the trees at this point . They are very lucky to be only 4 games out . Don’t expect any calls to be made that would be admitting they made mistakes …..But the club can turn this around with the right moves …

by cubs north on May 24, 2009 11:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Right.

Which is th emain reason that there’s no way they’d trade for DeRosa again; it would make Hendry look like a fool and anybody who doesn’t think ego plays a part in this hasn’t been paying attention.

I loved DeRo too but he’s gone and he’s not coming back.

Lou Piniella

just might be the best manager this franchise has had in decades. If he’s gone by the ASB, it’ll be his decision. He doesn’t need the aggravation.

by Not Bruce Froemming on May 24, 2009 11:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Considering the managers the Cubs have had in past decades...

that’s not exactly a glowing endorsement.

I do agree though that there’s absolutely no way Pinella gets fired-I highly doubt he’ll walk away either.

I’ve been a Pinella booster since day one but, truthfully, he doesn’t seem to have the fire he once had. This team looks completely lethargic right now and that’s as much a reflection of the manager as it is anything else.

by bluekoolaide on May 24, 2009 11:35 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Fire is overrated

Jumping up and down doesn’t win you games. Maybe it pleases fans, but that’s about it.

....Lou Piniella circa 2007, 2008....

I seem to remember Lou getting himself suspended, Jim ditching our starting catcher for a bag of balls in order to send a message…. And the team responding! These guys are pros, but they are also human…. They react to stimuli, and emotion plays a role.. Time to send a message.

Sammy Sosa agrees with D98.
“I’ve never seen him like that before,” Sosa said of Baker. “That was good motivation for us. When you see your manager go out, ready to fight, if you’re sleeping, you wake up.”

This in reference to Baker getting himself tossed out of a game in which he had failed to submit his new lineup to CB Bucknor. But you’ll probably dismiss that because it came from Sosa.

Depends on the team, but in this case I agree...

I’d say there are some teams (but very few) who actually need a fiery manager, the 2009 Cubs not being one of them.

by SouthernCub on May 25, 2009 7:41 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don't agree with some

Cotts and Patton should be gone. Bring up another lefty to replace Cotts and another bat off the bench.

Marmol should stay where he is. He comes in during critical situations… who are you replacing him with. Marmol is saving games that would be otherwise lost if a lesser reliever were coming in.

IMO, the key here is Fontenot/Theriot. Neither is an every day starter and Theriot’s glove/arm at SS isn’t cutting it. Let them platoon at 2B. Of course, the problem is that the bat the Cubs need to play SS isn’t out there. But if this team wants to make a big change that will deal with some of the problems, there is the solution.

by dmlichte on May 25, 2009 12:29 AM CDT reply actions   1 recs

I agree.

I really wish I knew what might move the Angels to trade one of Brandon Wood or Maicer Izturis and if we had it. Because other than the Angels, I don’t see a team with a SS to spare. Eventually Brignac might give Tampa that “problem” but I have a lot of doubts about his bat.

Derrek Lee is good.

by DGU on May 25, 2009 9:28 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good post... I'm glad Al pointed us to it in the main thread

1) This is a half no-brainer. Patton should be gone, but I have major concerns with Fox. Defense does matter. Lee is one of the few hitters hot right now and Jake’s only position is 1B. Stick him at 3B and you’ll see three bunt hit attempts a game.

I just have to believe the Cubs are praying he hits the cover off the ball during the DH series’ and they can trade him. He really is no use to the organization, long-term.

You could bring him up in the Darryle Ward role, but how hot is he going to remain, getting one AB a game?

2) Another no-brainer. Cotts should be gone.

3) I think we’re fixated on DeRosa — and I have real concerns about what it would take to get him. If merit holds, then it should be Scales’ job. We could do worse than Scales at 3B and Miles/Fontenot at 2B.

I will say the DeRosa would be excellent Bradley insurance.

4) Gregg is fine with me. Just so everyone knows, he’s going to get rocked his next time up. Hope to God the Cubs get up on the Pirates 10-0 or something, so Gregg can come in and make it 10-4 and get it out of his system.

5) I’m a MAJOR proponent of this move. Soto has to be shaken up a bit.

There is no such thing as an ugly female breast

by Worf on May 25, 2009 7:28 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

My thoughts

1. Absolutely
2. Cotts should not be used as a LOOGY, as he’s not actually better against LH batters. Being used in that role would be a mistake. I’m not sold on Waddell though. Cotts is just your typical middle reliever.
3. DeRosa would be an unequivocal upgrade over what we have now in Freel/Miles/Scales. I don’t know if DeRosa is available, and I agree that he may be too expensive. I’m not sold that Scales will keep his hitting up. He’s tailed off dramatically since his hot start. I’d say this is more of an “if he’s available at the right price, I’d go get DeRosa.”
4. Gregg is definitely not great, but the closer role is overrated anyway. I think Marmol is more valuable in the middle innings bailing the team out of jams. I’d prefer a better pitcher than Gregg at closer, but I’d rather have Gregg in the less important role of closer than in the fireman’s role.
5. I don’t think Hill’s bat will play out over more playing time, and Soto has hit better in May (still no power though). I’d stick with him as the regular catcher, but give Hill a bit more time to keep Soto rested.

"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra

by Al on May 25, 2009 8:18 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think we have to assume

That Ramirez will need days off when he comes back. He is going to be as rusty as hell and may not be entirely right until next season.

I would love DeRosa back, but I truly fear the cost. In order to completely avoid overpaying, Hendry is going to have to play chicken with the Indians. That’ll take time.

I don’t think DeRosa can be brought back next week without serious damage to the future. And I don’t think he’s worth that much.

Kouzmanoff is a stopgap and a better one than Freel.
