Freel May be Headed to the DL

Well just when major moves were made today, there may be another one that occurs in the next 24 hours. Apparently Ryan Freel may go on the 15-day DL as a result of a strained hamstring. A quote frome Lou: "If Scales isn't too far, he should catch a taxi back from the airport." Apparently, he thinks it is that serious..

Sigh, this team cannot keep a 3b healthy, at all!

I don't wish an injury on anyone...

But I prefer Mr. Scales to Mr. Freel.

I like Jake Fox's bat...

But if he gets a start at 3B tomorrow, I’ll puke.

Better.

Better get a bucket.

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

Question.

Should Fox get a start at Third to see if he handle it?

if this was still new to me, i wouldn't understand

by N Oakley on May 28, 2009 10:39 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I guess I'd say...

…given the Cubs place in the standings and winning percentage, no, he should not. Were they a little further over the .500 mark – or perhaps in first place with a relatively safe cushion – maybe Lou could afford giving Fox a look-see at third for a game or three.

For the time being, I’d put Scales at third and use Fox only for PH duties. Maybe if the Cubs are blowing out the Dodgers in one of these upcoming games I’d put Fox at third just to see how he looks. That’s just me, though. Maybe I’m being too conservative.

Maybe instead....

… have him keep working out there, and put him in at 3B in the late innings of a blowout.

Not a bad idea.

I keep thinking down the path of:

1. Fox’s bat is on fire
2. He has experience at third
3. Ramirez is out indefinitely and who knows how he is on return
4. Some pretty bad defensive third basemen had decent careers at third over the years.
5. Maybe

Like the blowout idea as it has to be tried at some point. How many “only first basemen” can one team carry.

if this was still new to me, i wouldn't understand

by N Oakley on May 28, 2009 11:00 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, he has MINIMAL minor league experience at third.

And absolutely no major league experience. Otherwise, yeah, he set the minors on fire at the plate and, FWIW, worked a very nice AB yesterday. Sadly, he’s just not a perfect fit for what the Cubs need right now – he’s barely a fit at all, to be honest.

Get used to Juan Pierre on base a lot

from bunt hits

Not saying that can’t be worked around, but it will happen

Now there's a reason NOT to play Fox at 3B in this series.

Yep, Pierre's been on fire, too.

It's official...

Linky

Infielder Ryan Freel will be the latest Cub to go on the disabled list on Thursday after pulling his left hamstring during Wednesday’s game.

Bobby Scales, who was sent down to Triple-A Iowa before the game, along with left-hander Neal Cotts, will be called back up on Friday.

“Scales isn’t too far,” Piniella said. “He can catch a taxi back from the airport.”

Don’t worry. That isn’t quite phrased right. Scales is coming back. Cotts stays at Iowa.

Before I read the last line of your post, I did stop and think for a minute how the Cubs could do a 2 for 1.

Why tomorrow?

Scales can’t make it back in time for tonight’s game?

Ah, that's true

Forgot he was under the weather. I mean I figure we’ll survive tonight w/o him, I just was wondering the reason for the delay in getting him back up here.

Screw Freel

My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver
