Big Z suspended for 6. Not too happy about this, given Carlson's actions. I would expect Z to appeal.

Less than I thought

Z appeals and they bring it down to 4 and it’s nothing.

And he misses no starts. As many of us assumed all along.

I don't expect the suspension to be reduced.

While the ump initiated the contact, Z used his arm to push the ump’s arm away. Because of Z’s action, I imagine the suspension will be kept at 6 games to ensure Z misses one start.

I realize he’s entitled to his appeal and will probably want his day in court to argue the faults of the ump, but with Z just coming back from injury, I’d rather he just serve it now, rest up a little, and put this behind the team.

if this was still new to me, i wouldn't understand

by N Oakley on May 28, 2009 4:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Let him appeal

And hope it gets delayed for a couple months (unlikely I know) when we have a real 3B playing for us.

Story updated to reflect that he WON'T appeal.

Interesting.

Bad reporting by ESPN.

His tirade came after Morgan was already ruled safe, and the score was tied 2-2. They also don’t mention the reason for the suspension, is it for the tirade, or for the contact with the ump?

I think the careful wording of the article....

… mentioning everything but the bump till the last paragraph, may be telling. I know the MLB doesn’t write the articles (the AP wrote this one), but they influence them with how they release the news. My guess… he was suspended for the ball and glove tossing, and maybe the sports drink vending machine abuse. The bump was ruled incidental or at least 50% the ump’s fault.

I was thinking the same thing

Contact with the ump was obviously the biggest thing, whether or not it was Z’s fault should have been mentioned

Yahoo.com article says

“Bob Watson, baseball’s vice president in charged is discipline, cited Zambrano for "inappropriate and violent actions on the field and in the dugout."”

That sounds like he might be side stepping the actual bumping, and going more for flipping out like none other

by WanderingWanderer on May 28, 2009 4:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Which means he gets nothing

if he doesn’t flip out.

In ESPNs rush to get the story out...

they left out the details initially. They now have updated it. Inappropriate and violent behavior? Come on Watson.

taking a baseball bat to something isn't violent

throwing a baseball as hard as you can and screaming in someone’s face isn’t inappropriate?

Something tells me you’d have no problem with the ruling if it was a Brewer

by WanderingWanderer on May 28, 2009 4:48 PM CDT up reply actions

I was referring to the fact that Watson did not address the issue of the umpire initiating contact with Z.

Which, in my assessment is the spark that ignited Zambrano. That is clearly at the root of this issue, and MLB side stepped once again. Please don’t put words in my mouth, and don’t assume that what I would, or would not have a problem with. Thank you.

So.

How long do you think this appeal takes? Didn’t Milton’s take the better part of 10 days to be heard?

I hope this doesn’t drag on that long…

Z's agent said that he is not appealing...

The suspension has the grand effect of one more days rest before his next start. The equivalent of an off day for the team. He begins the suspension tonight.

Good

lets get it over with… and move on.

C’mon 7pm. I’m ready for baseball talk again.

Hmmm

Though I like that they want to get this over with, I think it allows Carlson to get away with what he did without any kind of punishment or major scrutiny

We don't know that...

… the MLB is notoriously nontransparent.

For all we know, the MLB said “you blew up irrationally all over TV, our guy screwed up all over TV, we’ll push your next start a day to make it look like we are doing our job, you agree to not appeal so we don’t have to see video of our umps touching a player on ESPN again”.

I believe Z pitches pretty well on extra rest...

…so this could end up having a silver lining, assuming the Cubs don’t need to juggle their roster to work in another starter.

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

Another thought.

Z should have the players union call MLB and offer to begin serving immediately, with no appeal, if the Ump is suspended 1 game for his behavior.

if this was still new to me, i wouldn't understand

by N Oakley on May 28, 2009 4:32 PM CDT reply actions

Or

At least if they promise in writing to give a thorough review of umpire conduct.

…Fat chance, though :(

Call the MLB offices at (212) 931-7800

if you want to ask what they will do to the umpire.

by dfrancon on May 28, 2009 4:57 PM CDT reply actions

They aren't answering this evening, but

you can dial Bob Watson’s extension, which is 7818.

happy to see only 6,

but he deserved more.

Does this mean he is docked 6/162nds of his salary?

by BatCubFan on May 28, 2009 4:58 PM CDT reply actions

Dunno

But he’s also being fined $3,000.

by redward on May 28, 2009 4:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Wow

After watching the videos, and reading what I have, I feel like we are the ONLY ones who are saying anything about the ump bumping into Z.

If so, then, nothing is going to change.

by TheHawkRules on May 28, 2009 11:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Unless I'm wrong...

it wouldn’t make too much sense appealing a 6 game suspension. The league would probably reduce the suspension to 5 games. Bradley’s appeal took forever and, of course, the league reduced his suspension from 2 games to 1 a day after he was given the day off. (actually, it was during the middle of that game, which makes a conspiracy theorist wonder….) If the league can decide on the appeal anytime it wants, theoretically it could force Z to miss more than 6 games if the suspension was to be enforced say 3 for 4 games after Zambrano’s last start. Unless the MLB handles starting pitcher suspensions differently and only rules on the appeal a day after that pitcher’s start. If someone with more knowledge than me on the subject can expand, please do.
