Baseball is very what have you done for me lately

Which makes it surprising guys like Ozzie Guillen stick around so long…

by lswaidz on May 29, 2009 4:20 PM CDT reply actions

It's official

Linky

The reason Ozzie sticks around is that he is a personal pet of Jerry Reinsdorf.

No it's because he sleeps with Hugo Chavez.

Sorry but that is my favorite all time Ozzie line. The guy IS funny.

No, because he is one of the absolute best managers in baseball

Awww, come on guys, it's so simple maybe you need a refresher course. It's all ball bearings ...

by BLou on May 30, 2009 4:44 PM CDT up reply actions

tell that to Lilly

who said part of his problem with the Sox was how Ozzie manages

baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out

by Cubbie-Tim on May 31, 2009 5:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Peavy not Lilly

Lilly had his own dust up with Ozzie

They had a war of words over steroid testing etc. Ted is the Cubs Union rep and he was just a tad annoyed with Ozzie. It was pretty funny. I don’t remember Peavy saying he was concerned about Ozzie. I imagine he would be but surprised he would say it. I remember when Ozzie and Ordonez had a big war of words when Maggs went to the Tigers. It was pretty ugly
A reporter asked one of the White Sox who understandably wanted to remain anonymous how to stay on Ozzie’s good side and he said " Never leave".

I was referring to how

Peavy said he was not comfortable with how Ozzie manages and that was (insinuated in the article) as part of why he turned down the trade

baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out

Did Peavy actually say that or was that speculation?

Yeah, and his managerial record has nothing to do with it...

’04 (83-79) 2nd place
’05 (99-63) 1st place, World Series Championship
’06 (90-72) 3rd place
’07 (72-90) 4th place
’08 (89-74) 1st place

Al, when it comes to the Sox your reasonableness and logic fly out the window and you make silly (to be kind) comments. Reinsdorf is loyal to his people, loyal perhaps to a fault. However the reason Guillen is still managing the Sox is because he’s a damn good manager and he’s been very successful.

The question Cubs fans should be asking themselves (instead of taking snide shots at the Sox, the team you claim to not care about) is why is Jim Hendry still the Cubs GM?

Let's put it this way.

Had any other manager made some of the public pronouncements that Ozzie has made, he’d have been fired long ago.

Probably true...

… but it’s not because he’s a pet of Reinsdorf. Guillen has his job because of his success as a manager and Reinsdorf’s loyalty.

Loyalty, "pet"...

… same thing, different words.

According to Websters...

PET

a pampered and usually spoiled child b: a person who is treated with unusual kindness or consideration

LOYALTY

1: unswerving in allegiance: as a: faithful in allegiance to one’s lawful sovereign or government b: faithful to a private person to whom fidelity is due c: faithful to a cause, ideal, custom, institution, or product

“Pet” is patronizing. “Loyalty” is not.

Ozzie may not be everyone's cup of tea

but let’s remember, he did win the division last year with a team practically no one thought would contend.

And that little thing called the World Series in 2005

Hurdle was all but fired in 2007

and would’ve been let go at the end of that season had the team finished that season like they had performed during most of his tenure. He’s a serviceable manager, but the baseball gods bestowed one heck of a great month on his career and he rode the wave.

Colorado is a mess

Nobody can quite figure out a formula for winning in Coors Field. It’s really too bad because it is a wonderful ballpark in a great city. They are an organization who would be best served by conducting a fire sale and starting all over for the umpteenth time. I’ve got to believe that teams would be lined up to talk about Brad Hawpe and Huston Street.

What a difference 10 days makes...
The White Sox are a “winning situation”? Have you checked the AL Central standings lately?…The Sox are farther behind bad teams than the Cubs are behind good teams. Further, the Sox seem to have regressed from their playoff team of a year ago. - Al Yellon, May 21, 2009

Chicago Cubs 25-24 4.5 games out, 4th place
Chicago White Sox 24-25 4.0 games out, 2nd place

Cubbies only one game ahead of the Sox.
