Yes, but...

The ball was acted upon by a player… a bird is not a player… I’m actually not to sure about this one, but I think is most domed stadiums a ball that strikes the roof and leaves the field of play in fair territory is ruled a ground rule double, so I’d imagine similar rules would apply here.

by lswaidz on May 30, 2009 5:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Those ground rules are set by the teams inhabiting those stadiums

Don’t know if any team has a ground rule regarding birds

Birds and baseball

This is my favorite story Dave Winfield, Billy Martin and one unfortunate gull. I decided to google it as it would come out better that way.

On August 4, 1983, Dave Winfield and the Yankees were playing against the Blue Jays in Toronto. Winfield had a great game, driving in two runs as the Yankees won 3-1. Unfortunately, he was arrested after the game. In the middle of the fifth, Winfield finished his warmups and tossed the ball to a batboy. The ball hit a seagull on the head, killing the bird, and Winfield was charged with cruelty to animals.

“They say he hit the gull on purpose,” said Yanks manager Billy Martin “They wouldn’t say that if they’d seen the throws he’d been making all year. It’s the first time he’s hit the cutoff man.”

The charges were dropped the next day.

Blanco has done enough on defense

to warrant staying on the team over both Freel and Miles if you ask me.

One of the things I fault Cubs managemet for most in the last 15 years isrelying on mediocre at best veterans instead of letting younger, hungrier but less experienced have those roles. Backup infielder roles are perfect fo Blanco and Scales and I like what they have shown.

Am I way off on that?
