Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

Looks like Z is on his way to the 15-day DL and Bobby Scales (IF, Switch Hitter) is on his way up from Iowa. I would imagine Heilman or The Shark will get a start or two.

can you "recall" a player

who has never been to the show? Isn’t he being “called”?

Well, he was up the other day.

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

daver, you know the minimum number of days a call-up has to be w/ the big league club

before they get sent back down? I thought I remembered it being 3 days… but I’m probably wrong.

I think it's the other way around

Once you’re sent down, you have to stay in the minors for three days, unless there’s an injury. But I’m not certain of that.

by Not Bruce Froemming on May 4, 2009 4:32 PM CDT up reply actions

This doesn't exist

There is a minimum, 5 days, before a player sent down can be recalled, however this waiting period can be waived if there is an injury. A player does not have to remain on the 25-man roster for any certain period. Players have been recalled for one game, often pitchers, told that no matter how good their performance, they are going back to the minors after the game.

I know they don't need another 1B, but...

has you’ve seen what Jake Fox is doing in AAA:

Jake Fox is on one of those wild Triple-A tears of legend — Crash Davis-like. The Cubs journeyman hit his 12th homer — TWELVE! — and raised his average to .446. He also has eight doubles.

12 HRs and 8 Doubles? Already? WOW!

It seems like the law of averages...

All we can hope is the team can find a way to stick close to .500 and, at some point soon, get healthy and go on a run later this month or next.

Not to be "that guy" posting "that response"

But didn’t a few of the aforementioned players participate in Bud Seligs Spring Carinval of Fail (aka the WBC)? You’ve got to wonder how that affected their normal spring conditioning routines and whether or not that lead to them not being in baseball-ready condition. Geo for sure has been affected (I heard he only caught 4 INNINGS all Spring) and Marmol’s loss I think is still messing w/ his head, although he looked great the other day. DLee is coming around (new batting stance, thanks Sarge), Rami is supposed to be back tonight, Bradley is… Bradley (sort of what I expected with a DH trying to play OF everyday)… and the Z injury is… a freak injury, it’s going to happen w/ any player that goes 100% on a play he isn’t conditioned for.

by lswaidz on May 4, 2009 4:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, only two.

I believe Geo’s shoulder thing pre-dated the WBC. (He described it as a recurring problem.) And, of course, Marmol’s injury happened on the mound just recently. I’m not sure I’m ready to believe Marmol’s WBC outing has really affected his head. He’s probably a guy who’ll always struggle to pull himself together from time to time.

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

by daver on May 4, 2009 4:23 PM CDT up reply actions

With a guy like Marmol

You have to wonder how much that really did affect him… he is a 99% mental player, meaning he only needs about 1% of his ability to pitch effectively… similar to how Zambrano used to be back in the day, one little thing would happen and it would affect his next 2 or 3 starts… I just worry with Marmol being so young what kind of lasting affect that (and his subsequent failings the first few weeks) has taken on his mental approach on the rubber.

As far as Geo goes, even I noticed he looked awfully heavy the first few weeks. He had a good deal of baby fat on his face, and I was worried it would affect him negatively. I think he’s starting to come out of his hitting slump, and he’s looking a lot leaner so it looks like Mark ONeal got him pointed in the right direction again. And remember, this would be about the time Geo and Carlos would be hitting week one of the opening season, had they been at spring camp the whole time.

by lswaidz on May 4, 2009 4:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Here's a response

(understanding that you may be playing Devil’s Advocate)

What about a guy like Shairon Martis, who just threw a complete game victory against the Phillies and who played in the WBC? Or Kosuke Fukodome, who is off to a great start? Or even Kevin Youkilis?

I do wonder why lots of players who did play in the WBC are off to great starts but it never gets mentioned, while everyone who is hurt or slumping who played in the WBC is because they played in the WBC.

Several dozen major leaguers played in the WBC. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that some of them are hurt and some of them are slumping.

so, if he does, his start Friday (for Zambrano) would be on three-days rest. I think it will be telling if he pitches tonight or is limited in pitch count.

FWIW, Iowa’s rotation looks like this for the week: Monday – Wells, Tuesday – Atkins, Wed. – Ascanio, Thurs. – Mathes

a few things

Scales likely is only gonna be up in the majors for 3 or 4 days. But what I think is the added bonus is that he’s now on the 40-man roster. IIRC now that he’s on the 40-man, he makes more money, even if he’s sent back down (as long as remains on the 40-man, though that would necessitate him going on waivers).

No big deal

I mean according to our Mets fan on here Zambrano is the most inconsistent starter in the NL anyways right? :)

Im in Chicago next week and really wanted to see him pitch. Have I told you in the last 5 games I’ve seen Z pitch he’s hit a HR in 4 of them. That’s a pretty nice stat.

by ak123 on May 4, 2009 5:02 PM CDT reply actions

I have never seen him lose a regular season game at home. The only loss I saw him start in the regular season was last year opening day and he had a ND.

by puckishcubsfan on May 4, 2009 5:16 PM CDT up reply actions

We're both good luck charms I guess!

I’ve actually seen him lose two games though. One was at Shea against Victor Zambrano. That was a bad game. The other game was against the Padres when he had a no no into the 7th. That was also the famous brawl on Wrigley.

Other than that I’ve seen him quietly defeat Mets twice, win in LA (he might have hit a HR that game…don’t think so though) and win at Wrigley twice. I know he’s hit 4 HR’s when I’ve been there but other than at Shea I can’t tell you when they were. I might have also seen him pitch in Philly and getting one of those wins mixed up.

by ak123 on May 4, 2009 5:45 PM CDT up reply actions

He IS inconsistent...

he’s also good. Saying that Zambrano is the most inconsistent starter in the NL doesn’t mean Zambrano is not good. It just means he’s not consistently good.

Why wont Samardzija get a shot?

The sub par bullpen earlier in the year has already caused him to be jerked around this year, give him a shot at starting in the bigs already. You can only shift him back and forth from starter to reliever so many times

Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.

by bren on May 5, 2009 8:23 AM CDT up reply actions

It's definitely not good for Samardzija's development as a pitcher...

for a guy who is still raw and developing, moving him to the bullpen isn’t going to help him develop the pitches necessary to be a starter. And it’s backfiring now in that he’d probably have been the callup to fill in for Zambrano, but now he’s being wasted at the end of the bullpen.

by SouthernCub on May 5, 2009 8:59 AM CDT up reply actions

My point exactly

B/C Hendry did such a horrible job assembling the bullpen, our best pitching prospect is being wasted in the middle innings

they should send him back down, and bring up someone else.

on the other hand, Marshall filled the long-man role pretty well last year and he’s starting this year, and doing ok. his last start was amazingly good, till the pen blew it.

Cubs By The Numbers

Cubs By The Numbers is a history of the ballclub by uniform number, but the biographies help trace the history of our beloved team in a new way. For everyone who's a Cubs fan, anyone who ever wore the uniform is like family. Cubs By The Numbers reintroduces readers to some of their long-lost ancestors, even ones they think they already know.
