baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
Hooray!
Jackie likes the smell of cut grass, he used to play ball on Saturdays, Playin in the sun...
Let's go, Sean!
I’m predicting 7 2/3 sparkling innings today.

Um, someone tell me why Lou put this lineup out there?
Especially Fontiny at 3rd again? Is Aramis not 100%? What’s going on???
yes, cause you are more knowledgable about the state of the Chicago Cubs and it's players than the man managing
Funny the way it is, how a kid walks ten miles to school while another is dropping out
I'm for it. You can not win every game and with Lincecum on the mound, it makes sense to get some guys a day off. Big series in Milwaukee this weekend
Some of the best managers in the history of the game
have said that one thing that made them so successful was knowing how to lose games in April to win games in October. Now, I realize that it is May, but you get the picture
now find out how many of them benched 4 starters all on the same day
and proclaimed both of their back of the bullpen guys were also unavailable
"Oh Crap"
-Famous Last Words by General George Custer
while batting two of their worst hitters at #1, and #2 in the lineup
"Oh Crap"
-Famous Last Words by General George Custer
I realize that it is, at best, a mediocre lineup
But sometimes Piniella may know what he is doing…give the man some credit
Ridiculous
You don’t walk out with the intention of losing a game. You may not have the most solid line-up or matchups, but you do not go out there thinking – “Oh heck its April time to get that big ‘L’ in today”
"Ask Dad. He'll know. And on the off chance he doesn't, he'll make something up"
No, you don't. But the intention is not to lose.
It simply implies that managing often times takes compromise. I’m pretty sure if Lou could just put his best players in the lineup every day with no negative consequences he would do just that. But he doesn’t do it, does he? Why? Because there are negative effects of playing guys every day
This makes just as much sense...
as the idea that Z shouldn’t be bunting.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

Can someone explain to me why Lee (who has had neck spasms)
isn’t getting an off-day today? Why not rest Lee, put Hoff at 1st, and keep Sori in at LF?

He is the manager of the team
and is therefore close to the players and coaches. He’s in a pretty good position to know who needs rest.
or put Bradley, who has had plenty of rest in the OF.
Also, wouldn’t it be a good idea in general to let the starters see an ace pitcher early in the season in case they should face him in the playoffs?
by Jerry Mumphrey on May 5, 2009 1:50 PM CDT up reply actions
Crazy
This is just plain crazy. Proof positive that players and managers alike don’t believe the garbage that they spew that games early in the season are as meaningful as games late in the season.
I don’t care if Cy Freaking Young is on the mound, you don’t send up a lineup like this unless guys really can’t play. This is not only an embarassment to the game but is particularly troublesome when a team is playing reasonably well and trying to find its own identity.
I don’t take much exception to what Pineilla has done during his tenure in Chicago, but this one is just plain wrong. He should be ashamed at this lineup. If he wanted to do this, perhaps he should have had the Cubs hire Jim Essian, Tom Trebelhorn or (insert any other particularly bad Cubs manager in the last century here) to run this ragamuffin lineup.
Who needs a stinkin' tag line? What are they for anyway?
Agree...
If there was a brawl, then Zombie Cy Young would probably bite several Cubs starters, then we would have to put them on the DL too. I can just picture it:
Soriano – Out (zombie)
Ramirez – Day-to-day (multiple bite wounds)
Lee – Out (neck)
Ladies and gentlemen! It's 1985 all over again, but this time the offense goes to hell!
And if we win today?

by santoswoodenlegs on May 5, 2009 1:49 PM CDT up reply actions
Not the point
That’s not the point. Your job as a manager is to give your team the best chance to win on any given day. Resting guys 20 games into the season? That’s just plain laughable. They’ve had plenty of time to rest the past 9 months, spring included. Jogging to 1B on routine plays, jogging out and back from your position and generally half-assing it around for 20 games in reasonably cool weather is hardly a grind.
Who needs a stinkin' tag line? What are they for anyway?
you think the Cubs have
half-assed it for the past 20 games?
I see.

Contrary
You think the majority of them have played hard with consistency? I recognize that professional baseball has essentially become complacent in its collective effort from Low A ball all the way up but I didn’t realize it permeated all fan bases as well. Wake me when Boston trots out a lineup like this.
Who needs a stinkin' tag line? What are they for anyway?
I don't think
that either I, nor the Cubs, are complacent.

Funny the way it is, how a kid walks ten miles to school while another is dropping out
Why?
They’re in the middle of a 20-game stretch. Some guys haven’t had a day off all season. It’s getaway day. They’re assured of a winning homestand and a split in the series. Our No. 5 starter is facing the reigning Cy Young Award winner. And they’ve got five road games on tap against division opponents.
And you know what? The Cubs still might win, anyway.
Why don’t you just relax and enjoy the game?

Bengie Molina’s batting average as .303, and his on-base percentage as .293.
I knew that he was a slow runner, but how does he do that?
he drew a walk, but it took so long to get there that the ump allowed them to tag him out?
so it wasn’t an atbat, but a -1 walk?
