I want to throw something out there
Okay let’s assume Wells will get 3 starts.
He does quite well.
Marshall is doing okay but not setting the world on fire in the rotation.
Neal Cotts continues to struggle to get grandmothers out.
Do you suppose when Z comes back Marshall would be moved to the pen and Wells kept up in the rotation.
Jay is our Quarterback. I REPEAT JAY IS OUR QUARTERBACK. Did I mention we have a Quarterback who happens to be named Jay?.
I don't know
Most people haven’t realized that him and Lilly are our best pitchers right now. If Wells doesn’t do well however, I want to see Lou give Asciano a start in the majors.

Marshall has gone deeper and given us better starts against the #1 or #2
from the other teams. He is doing a GREAT job. Marshall has been an inning eater and a guy who has kept his team in every start.
I don’t get the “doing okay” comment. Any of the 30+ teams in baseball would trade for our #5 starter as an upgrade. I don’t want to trade him, but my point is that we are lucky to have him. We could use similar consistency out of our other 4 guys and the bullpen.

I should have phrased it better
I didn’t mean Marshall would deserve to lose his slot in the rotation. I like Sean a lot and think we’re going to be happy Hendry held on to him but we need lefty help. Of course they could bring up Wardell.

the only reason Wells is up
is because Z is on the DL. Without moving someone else to the DL when Z comes back, there’s no room for Wells.
And even if we did, that would mean having THIRTEEN pitchers on the 25 man roster. That’s a little ridiculous. Unless you’re going to toss Cotts under the bus — and it’s my impression that he did ok today, for example — Wells is going back down.

Unless Samardzija goes down and Wells stays in the bullpen.

well
if Wells can do any better than Shark, I’d be in favor of that.

If that happens and it works out, we'll be able to say...

All’s well that ends Wells.
I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

Sean Marshall is doing just fine, thank you very much.

Marshall did pretty good today
He was probably in a shade too long.
But yes, the scenario you paint could happen. Or at the least, Wells could be kept and Shark sent down.

I'm with you
People mock Bobby Scales as a 31 year old rookie, but I have no idea why the Padres didn’t call him up in 2003 when he was 25, they were in last place and they had Lou Merloni, Dave Hansen and Keith Lockhart running around as their backup infielders. I guess I could understand a “veteran bench presence” on a good team, but they were 64-98. Call up your prospects.
Then he had a bad season in 2004 and after that, he sort of got the “career minor leaguer” tag. I’m not saying he would have been a great player or even a regular in the majors had the Padres given him a chance, but I think he could have been a major league bench player, which is what he is now.
I agree with both of you.
Gathwrong has very, very marginal value. His contract is not that much in terms of dollars, so let’s move on. Scales has spent a decade playing all the infield spots. That could of helped us out on this home stand a lot more than Gathwrong’s ability to get picked off.

Did you see the look on his face when he stepped to the plate? I happened to walk through the break room at work and it was on the tv. All his dreams all that hard work finally coming to a head.

I think
I rooted for this lineup today because of him. I was so jazzed when he got his first MLB hit!

I was thinking about this
Scales gives us the speed on the basepaths, and we need more infield depth. Gathright may be the best centerfielder, but he’s never really going to get a chance.

As one of Gathright's few defenders around here...
…I can’t really disagree with you. Given Aramis’ injury and Theriot’s impending overuse, this team could use more depth in the infield. (Unfortunately, Scales is yet another second baseman, but whatcha gonna do?)
There’s really no perfect solution here – releasing Gathright would leave the team without a really strong defensive centerfielder, but they didn’t really have one last year either.

Fukudome & Johnson are both capable CF, if not "strong".
I think we could live with that.

Well, I believe pro athletes do need to watch their weight...
…so I assume he does this from time to time.

Gathwright makes me shudder
Just God-awful at the plate. This was an overreaction by Hendry from the playoffs. The burning desire to get more lefthanded. That and he brings speed to the team. That is true, but he needs someone to get on base for him so he can pinch run to show that speed. If not Scales, someone that adds more infield/offensive flexibility should stay with the team. Even Scales or Miles could play the outfield in a pinch. Defensively Johnson backs up Fuku, who slides over in the late innings so you can take out Bradley.
