Today's Tribune has an update on the sale. It won't be finished by the May 20-21 owners meetings, and there's no timetable to finish it.

Not goin' anywhere for a while?

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

And in further news

the Cubs are still waiting on Felix Pie, Dusty Baker is abusing our pitchers and when the hell are we going to cut Neifi Perez?

Man, this seems like this has been going on for that long.

Amazing

Frustrating for the fans, however can you imagine the frustration with the Ricketts family?
 Enough already.

I'd say

more of the blame lies with Sam Zell than the Ricketts. But maybe that’s what you meant.

by Josh77 on May 6, 2009 2:18 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

or the bankruiptcy court

since Zell is trying to finaggle around to avoid capital gains taxes, while the court wants to most $$$$ upfront to allow for creditors owed $$$

There's really no blame...

… it’s largely due to the current economic conditions, which have made it difficult for the Ricketts to complete their financing.

Al

Al I’m not sure where to put this.

But a decent source of mine who works in the TV industry has told me ABC has approached Maddux about Dancing with the Stars. Everything this person has told me about TV has turned to be true. (I knew House and Cuddy would get busy months ago for example)

Of course just because they approached him doesn’t mean he’d do it. I can’t imagine he would,

Jay is our Quarterback. I REPEAT JAY IS OUR QUARTERBACK. Did I mention we have a Quarterback who happens to be named Jay?.

Hmmm.

Well, I wouldn’t be surprised if they approached him.

But I agree with you. I can’t imagine him agreeing to do it.

I'm dying to read Jessica's reaction to this rumor.

That would a total waste of time

Short of asking J.D Salinger I can’t imagine anyone less likely to accept. Maddux spend his entire career by carefully separating his public and private life. He understood he was famous person and was always pleasant if usually boring with the press. The only commercial he ever did was “chicks dig the long ball” which I suspect appealed to his sense of humor since he did not need the money. He was often asked why he did not do more endorsements and he answered he never had time during the season and did not want to be bothered in the off season. HA. He just liked to be able to enjoy life outside the park. He had great line about this in the Boswell article years ago. Around the park they know who you are, he told him " a mile down the road dude, they haven’t got a clue" and this how he likes it.

Now he is pretty much a public person in Vegas where his presence is often mentioned at the many sporting events he goes to but once there he just like to sit by himself or with friends and enjoy it. Never any sitings of him at celebrity events, fancy restaurants etc.
I will repost one of my favorite Maddux bits from the opening of Boswell’s profile of Maddux

“If you want a series of interviews with a star athlete and you don’t already have a personal history with him, this is what usually happens: You have top perform the goddamn twelve labors of Hercules. You talk to his agent, his lawyer, his general manager, his team’s public relations director. Your people talk to his people. You block out time. You do a courtship dance. The process can take weeks. Perhaps he blows you off. Finally, you go to a steakhouse or play golf or visit him in his home. But, underneath it all, here’s the basic ground rule and the subtext: He’s a star.
This is how it works with Greg Maddux. You walk up to him in the clubhouse and introduce yourself. He says, “Playboy, huh? Do I get to pose?”

Again I can’t imagine him wanting to "Dancing with the Stars " BUT I am pretty sure he would do Celebrity Jeopardy ( He loves beating Boras at Jeopardy to show a guy with not a day in college can nevertheless know more than one with college and law degree).

Oh and while were on my favorite subject I did like this line from Sunday’s Hardball Times in recap of the game.

“The Cubs retired Fergie Jenkins’ and Greg Maddux’s number 31 before the game. In light of Zambrano’s injury, I wonder if anyone had the bright idea to offer Maddux a contract.”

"I daydream just like everybody else, I just do it with my body facing the field, so everybody thinks I'm paying attention."- Greg Maddux

Thanks - you did not disappoint!

And I could totally see Maddux on Jeopardy.
