I didn't see the argument, but I did see the pitches -- bad. From what I've read, the contact was incidental and the umpire did nothing to diffuse the situation.

Bulging discs and/or herniated discs don't go away on their own

I have one (woo-hoo) and other than surgery, the prevalent prescription is anti-inflammatory drugs and steroids. I doubt the latter are kosher with MLB. So besides rest and a bit of luck getting a good bed and pillows at the hotel, DLee is on his way to the OR.

Actually,

the myriad doctors I’ve seen have described fairly minimally-invasive surgery and full recovery—for me—is about four weeks. An athlete like Lee should recover sooner. I haven’t opted for the surgery because my hernia surrounds the sciatic nerve and I’m a big, HUGE pansy.

Lee's neck is bothering him, hence why he is out of the lineup

I swear to God if Bobby Scales takes on Matt Murton like mystique around here I shall come through the computer screen and kill somebody.

Bobby Scales is tasting his probable first and last 5 days in the major leagues folks. And NO, he is not suitable option to serve on the Cub bench.

where does this mythical

option on the bench COME FROM then? He’s in our system. He’s inexpensive. He’s quick on the basepaths, and he’s arguably as good as Miles fielding. He doesn’t overrun bases and he got a hit against Tim freakin’ Lincecum.

We’re not going to get JJ Hardy as a backup infielder.

Jeff Samardzija

Jeff Samardzija is not ready to pitch in the big leagues. Simple as that. It is mystery to me why he was called up in the first place. I sure in the heck hope that someday he delivers on even a fraction of the hype because I’m having increasingly difficult time understanding what his major league future really may be.

I would have liked to see Jose Ascanio or Jeff Stevens called up. But Jim Hendry has long had a soft spot for Chad Fox in the same way he has apparent love affair for Notre Dame football players. Sigh.

The window for winning a World Series may have waned.

by BLou on May 6, 2009 5:15 PM CDT reply actions

Another "It would never happen" situation, but....

what if MLB upheld Bradley’s supsension, and Lou, Hendry, Crane, and basically the whole Cubs organization considered the suspension wrong, and sent Bradley out to play anyway?

Would the umpires not allow him to take the field, or enter the batter’s box? If they did, would the opposing team have a case for winning the game automatically via a Cubs forfeit? Would it result in a suspension for Lou, and/or massive fines for the club?

Again, I know this situation is an impossibility of ever occurring…. just wondering what it would result in, if it ever happened.

by MillsChC on May 7, 2009 1:37 AM CDT reply actions

No baseball management would ever do that.

The rules are there; whether they agreed with the decision or not, to break a rule like this would make them hated in the baseball world.

I’m not sure what would happen if any team did that, but as you say, it’s impossible. No team would do it.

incidental

occurring by chance – that meaning wouldn’t fit.

by ol Pete on May 7, 2009 8:11 AM CDT reply actions

Yes, it would.

Bradley did not go out there INTENDING to brush cap bills. It happened by chance.

If a player gets angry and pushes into an umpire — which has happened before — there’s much more intent behind that. That didn’t happen in this case.

I agree.

It’s a tough call for MLB — they don’t want to throw the umpires under the bus, but in this case Vanover went overboard. I think Bradley was suspended on reputation here, not on what really happened.

c'mon

that’s about as big a stretch as can be. It’s an easy call for MLB.

by Al Yellon on May 7, 2009 8:55 AM CDT up reply actions

no we should not have signed Dunn

his defense is horrific, and his offense would not have offset the defensive downfall.

Marquis I agree, he should not have traded, but on the flipside, Marshall has done nicely (so far) as the 5th starter. He is not looking stuipid on the starting rotation part of that trade.

Vizciano was a move that has many scratching their heads both at the time of the trade and the time of the release, will give you that one.

Gathright, no one seems to know his role. He has looked bad on the bases, cannot hit, should be defensive replacement in the OF for Sorinao or MB almost each night. This one is on Lou for not having figured out how to use Gathright, not Hendry.

and as Al said, MB feels he does not deserve the suspension, and I agree with him for saying so and sticking to his guns on it.
