my new favorite players
Well, actually they are not new, but with every A-roid, Manny episode, Tejada, Clemens, etc, it makes me appreciate guys who play the game right and play it well.
Say what you will about Jeter, Theriot, Fontenot, and guys in that mold (and I'm not putting those 3 on the same playing level), but they play the game hard and they play it right.
Jeter is ripped for being overrated, Theriot, and Fonty too, but I'd be shocked if anything ever came out about those guys being a cheat.
Jeter is a class act, a solid player with very good career numbers, and what, 4 or 5 WS rings? I know baseball is a team sport, but how many have they won with A-roid? a-hem....
i loved Jeter's quote about the remaining names being brought out. "Why would I worry about it?". i think he meant that as sincerely as possible.
I am 100% in favor of putting the damn names on the front page of the USA Today, let Selig banish them from the Hall, and then promptly say the 5 year waiting period is waved for Jeter.
Sorry for the rant, but i am irritated by all the cheats (it happens in my business too), and it sucks for guys who play the right way.
My soapbox is now clear.

the problem is ...
… you need to adjust your new fav list after every revelation. I’m sure there are people who thought MRam was in the safe list before yesterday. How willing are you to bet the farm on Jeter not showing up on some list in the future? How do you explain Theriot’s recent power surge? (kidding).
Baseball has lost it’s credibility. How can these players be trusted in the future? Selig is doing everything to brush these under the carpet. All players who have failed a test need to be brought out into the light. 50 games? — isn’t enough.

Manny said the same thing in an interview this spring. Just sayin….

Right.
Someone said it on another post. Sluggers have been caught doping, but so have utility men. Big guys and little guys, flamethrowers and soft-tossers. Nice guys and jerks. Guys that said they didn’t do it. Guys with performance spikes, guys that hit year after year, guys that never hit in the first place. There’s no profile. It’s silly to say you only like middle-infielders anymore.

Yes, you are all very good at identifying players who don't hit a lot of home runs.
But why is everyone seemingly oblivious to the fact that Eckstein and the like hits it farther, and bench presses a lot more for that matter, than the general populace. The average beer-swilling carnival attendee who can ring the bell with the giant mallet on Test-Your-Might would have trouble hitting a baseball into the outfield with a wooden bat off a tee. Everyone in the league has an incentive to get stronger. Heck you can lay down a bunt and run to first more effectively with more strength.

If Bill Simmons if big enough to publicly cast suspicions on Ortiz, Millar, Bellhorn, Nixon, etc.
I think we can all admit that our favorite Cubs have the same potential of hiding something. “Why would I worry about it?” and you’re convinced?! How about “I have never taken steriods” in front of a congressional commitee, did that have you convinced?! These are lines taken right out of the self-righteous steroid user playbook. How can you assume any of the Cubs are above the fray? These marginal/small players are just as likely and more to use PED’s to gain an edge to secure themselves for life with fame and fortune. I just hope none of our guys get caught, and if I were in their shoes I’d be trying to get some of the latest thing for myself.

This is what the gym rats are in to. It advertises itself pretty much as being ahead of the law. This is what guys are after and believe me every one of them is willing to mortgage their future health for a shot at sticking around in the bigs. It’s a culture that begins in high school athletics. Manny just got caught because he simply was no longer ahead of the law after they updated the test.

That is absolutely true
Juicing is big business, but incognito juicing is even bigger business. Only the super rich (Professional athletes) can afford to keep up with it. Maybe it hasn’t come out yet or people haven’t realized it, but the female hormones that Manny tested positive for were initially used as part of a system to cover up steroid use. Well, finally last year the MLB figured this out and added it to the banned substance testing. Therefore Manny got caught. The reason others might still be getting away with juicing is because they are ahead of the game as Jerry said. It is unfortunate, but it seems the steroid testing policy is only going to catch those who don’t constantly stay ahead of the game, and a vicious cycle of steroid use and covering it up may very well continue on in the MLB. As the testing processes figure out how to catch the latest signs of steroid use, new ways will emerge to cover it up. Those who count on steroids to keep them on top of their game, are willing to spend whatever it takes to hang on to the results (Fame, fortune, huge contracts, excellent stats, etc) that keep the money rolling in.
That's the way it has always been with PEDs. Someone will always be out there
trying to make a better mouse trap. It’s naive to think that any sport is going to be “cleaned up” with testing. Testing has and always be a way to weed out the stupid and to keep the casual user out of the game. Sports that have had problems with steroids(football, cycling, weightlifting) still have people being caught using PEDs. As long as there is someone out there willing to try to make a buck by inventing the next new steroid, there will be guys out there willing to take the chance that it might lengthen their career of give them that boost that puts them into the superstart club.
