I realize that this is pretty much a pointless issue to discuss as it is impossible to blow up a bullpen like the Cubs need to do. Tonight marks the 3rd time within the last week or so that Piniella has sent a starter back out late in a ball game only to see the starter fail to continue to pitch effectively. He did it with Harden (though the Cubs won), Marshall and tonight with Dempster. Both with Marshall and Dempster close ballgames then got out of hand.
If Piniella has no confidence in Guzman, Cotts, Patton or Fox, I'm not saying he should, to bring them into a game in the 7th after Dempster gutted out 6 innings then why they are the team? Heilman has been effective at times but, they can't count on getting 7-8 strong innings from the starters so Marmol and/or Gregg are the only relievers needed everyday.
The lack of a even moderately effective bullpen will be the cause of the Cubs to fail to compete, if they do indeed fail to compete, for a 3rd division title than any other problem the Cubs encounter this season.
