Roster Moves: Fox down; Miles back

Muskat reports Jake Fox has been demoted in favor of Aaron Miles. Miles sounds upbeat here saying:

The boys have played pretty good, considering all that's happened. There are some good months ahead.

and

With all the injuries and some of the guys starting slow — it's a blessing to be where we're at.

Despite the whole "ending a sentence in a preposition" thing, I think Miles point is a good one. But that doesn't mean it is easy to see Jake Fox leave after going "5-for-12 (.417) with the big league team, including a pinch-hit double on Tuesday in the Cubs' 7-1 win over the Astros." According the the esteamed [sic], Carrie Muskat.

I will tell you that NOBODY signed more autographs...

than Aaron Miles at the Iowa Cubs game the other night. It was almost like he was walking up and down the 3B line before the game looking for kids. You can at least give him credit for that, eh?

Sounds like a politician looking for photo ops.

Seriously, Aaron Miles seems like a nice guy, and he plays the game hard. I feel a little bad for him at times. Is he even aware of the amount of ire he’s raising among knowledgable Cubs fans?

In any case, his skill set is just so limited and his contract so…immovable.

"Among knowledgeable Cub fans"

Why should knowledgeable Cub fans be annoyed at Aaron Miles? He’s hit LH pitching, even while injured, which is really all he should have been doing on this roster. Aaron Miles can’t help his skill set. If you want to be annoyed at someone, be annoyed at Lou for the same backwards usage patterns that made Cedeno look worse than he was.

For the record, I'm glad the Cubs have a high payroll. Does anyone understand why the high payroll is something anyone should complain about?

by DGU on Jun 10, 2009 11:02 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, that's kinda why I feel bad for him.

He does play hard and, well, he is what he is. I see he’s put up a .263/.300/.421 (.721 OPS) vs. LHP in 20 PAs this season so far. I guess that’s about what we can expect from him.

Ideally, the Cubs would have a legit 3B backup who could allow Fontenot to go back to 2B where he belongs and Miles could just hold LBR’s place vs. LHP – though I’m still not convinced Fontenot couldn’t play everyday at second base.

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

His #s v. LHP were better until just before he went to the DL

and on his career, he’s managed a .351 OBP v. LHP.

No kidding on the legit 3B backup. Our season would be much different, I think, had Corey Koskie worked out.

For the record, I'm glad the Cubs have a high payroll. Does anyone understand why the high payroll is something anyone should complain about?

I can just picture it...

Reporter- “Lou, can you tell us why you recalled Miles?”

Lou – "Well, he can’t hit for power or average, fields kinda average for a guy known as a “glove man”, and we have at least three other guys who play the same positions he does, at least as well. But look, he signed a lot of autographs when he was down in Iowa. He got his reps signing his name, and that did the work he needed to do. So we called him up."

Ladies and gentlemen! It's 1985 all over again, but this time the offense goes to hell!

That's true

But Miles’s sample size from this year is miniscule. His career numbers are much better than anything Blanco can spit out. That’s not saying that Miles is good (I know he’s not), but I am saying is that Blanco is even worse.

There's no way to know anything for sure

but Blanco’s career minor league hitting stats don’t inspire much confidence. Miles is no slugger, but his career OBP numbers are good enough for a backup middle infielder. And you can say that he’s not good at SS, but he’s really not gonna be playing much SS with the Cubs current roster configuration. And I just don’t think Blanco’s that much better at 2B to account for the lack of offense you’re gonna get.

by Poloplaya14 on Jun 10, 2009 2:35 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Neither one of them is a starting player...

…so, though offense would be nice, it’s probably going to be a matter of bad vs. worse. Now, granted, Blanco is probably the worse, but I believe his range and throwing arm more than make up for it.

He hasn’t played enough ML innings at either 2B or SS to get definitive UZR numbers, but I would still maintain that he’s a better glove man at both positions than Aaron Miles. (FAR better at SS where the team REALLY needs depth.) The Cubs shouldn’t be counting on either player to do much at the plate – and neither should we.

I don't think we'll get much out of either player BUT

I think Miles will give more than Blanco at the plate. And right now, I think the ability to play 2B is much more important, considering that’s where the hole in the lineup is right now. The ability to hit lefties is also more important, since that’s when Fontenot ideally sits on the bench. Taking that into account, I’ll take Miles since he can hit lefties reasonably well and he’s a decent second-baseman.

by Poloplaya14 on Jun 10, 2009 7:15 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Aaron Miles career UZR numbers at 2B:

-5.9/-1.9 (in 3,579.1 innings). He’s a below league average second baseman – and that’s his natural position. Again, the marginal gain in batting average over Blaco probably won’t mean that much to the team.

Meanwhile, Blanco likely saves more runs in the field AND provides depth at the SS position. Do we really think Theriot can play almost every game of the season without risking injury or a severe offensive dropoff? This is about building a roster with depth – something Jim Hendry failed to do.

by dat cubfan daver on Jun 11, 2009 10:36 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's not a marginal gain in BA.

I’m convinced that Blanco will hit around or below the mendoza line. I also think a healthy Miles will hit about .270. That’s significant enough to make up for the lack of defense which isn’t as big as you think. Miles is only slightly below average, and Blanco is good, but not that good.

by Poloplaya14 on Jun 11, 2009 1:12 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Blanco is that good - defensively.

My question is: Why is Miles back here????

2009:
Miles: .204/.250/.265 (98 AB)
Blanco: .250/.323/.357 (28 AB)

I’m significantly more confident in Blanco’s glovework too…

98 ABs means little.

Miles is a better hitter than that. Any reasonably intelligent person can see that by looking at his career numbers.
Also, 28 ABs means even less. Blanco is not that good. Any reasonably intelligent person can see that by looking at his career numbers.

Miles is back

because he’s got the MLB contract, and he’s got seniority. Let’s be perfectly clear here — Blanco appears to have a much better glove, and nearly an equal bat. Miles appears to have declined significantly. However, I didn’t watch tonight’s game, so I don’t know he did.

What a joke

Miles goes away and we go 8-4. Fox is getting pinch hits, Blanco has come up and played defense, and Bobby Scales has even done a thing or two. WHY DO WE NEED THIS GUY?? Hendry has already eaten big contracts this season, just DFA Miles and end the nightmare.

The fact that I have to watch Aaron Miles play baseball again makes me sick.

Just say no to players named Aaron on the Cubs.

Where do you play Fox

so he is not a total defensive liability? As for Miles, he hit .300 last year, clearly he knows how to hit.

Career .685 OPS - Miles does not hit...

And Fox provides a pinch hitting option with power from the right side of the plate. Neither Miles, Scales, nor Blanco provide that.

OPS is not a good stat for Miles since he gives you no slugging

With that being said his OBP numbers aren’t that good either. career .325

But agree that Fox should’ve been kept at least for the PHs that he gives us, while we have an overabundance of the same type of player.

OPS is pretty much always a good measure...

The fact that he gives you absolutely no power is relevant. The fact that he also does not get on base is also relevant. Miles doesn’t get on base and doesn’t hit for any power. Thus, he’s not a good hitter – which is represented in his low OPS.

He does one thing sort of okay – hit singles. He does everything else pretty poorly. Thus, he’s not a good hitter.

by SouthernCub on Jun 10, 2009 9:27 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agree he is not a good hitter.

All I’m saying is that I would take a high OBP singles/walks guy with no slugging, while his OPS would be low, that same player would be useful. Let me be clear, Miles is not useful in either of our scenarios.

I agree that a high-OBP guy can offset some OPS loss.

Ultimately, you want to avoid making outs AND do damage. If you can’t do damage, you should at least avoid making outs.

And as you and I agree, Miles does neither of those things.

He adds some punch off of the bench. What does Scales give you that Blanco doesn’t? In my opinion nothing , so why have 4 second baseman on the roster when you can have Fox from the rightside and Hoffpauir from the leftside coming off the bench to hit in a key spot?

View this as Fox is going down

to get lots of defensive work at 3rd and the corner outfield spots and will be back by July for good. At least that would be a logical explanation to me.

by Cubsfan Waveland on Jun 10, 2009 8:52 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

We'll have to see whether Fox plays 3B in Iowa.

Honestly, by the time he gets enough reps in real games, Aramis will be back. But that doesn’t change the fact that the Cubs still need a backup third baseman going forward. Is Jake Fox that guy? It’s hard to believe, given his awful defensive reputation. But if he could pull off a miracle and learn to play the position at least semi-competently, his stock would certainly rise. If anything, it may open up the trade market to moving him to an NL team.

Fox vs. Scales

That Fox played RF din a game does not make him a RF. Soriano used to play 2b, but he was never any good at it. When Lou puts Fox in the field, he hopes that no one hist the ball Fox’s way because it will be quite an adventure if it happens.

That said, at this point in time, with interleague play coming, I would rather have Fox than Scales. But since they chose to send Fox down , hopefully it will be to have him learn how to play somewhere in the field so they can actually use him.

by lookingdeadred on Jun 10, 2009 8:55 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I understand the logic

Blanco can play defense at shortstop and 2nd base. Miles is being paid $5 million. Fox can’t play the field and is third on the depth chart at 1st base. Sometimes life is unfair. If Fox does want a viable major league future then he has to become tolerable enough to plop in the field.

You mean, let me understand this cause, ya know maybe it's me, I'm a little messed up maybe, but I'm funny how, I mean funny like I'm a clown, I amuse you? I make you laugh, I'm here to amuse you? What do you mean funny, funny how? How am I funny?

My only disagreement with the move...

is that it makes no sense to keep two light-hit/no-hit middle infielders on the bench. Fox provided a power RH bat as a pinch hitter, which I feel is worth more than a second middle-infield backup.

I’m guessing he’ll get recalled for the interleague play. Perhaps this is just allowing him to get regular AB until that time, so that he’s not rusty when the time comes. At that point, he and Hoffpauir will platoon at DH.

Jake Fox came up May 27 and hit .417/.429/.583 in 14 PAs.
Andres Blanco came up May 27 and hit .250/.323/.357 in 33 PAs.

When you have a guy practically begging to try a new position so that he could be an asset to the big league club, you might as well give him a chance.

is it possible

that’s he’s simply not good enough? Daver likes to talk about how Fox is supposed to be working with Trammel on playing 3rd, and it seems that so far, Fox hasn’t progressed enough. Fox played a game in right field, and the one ball that was hit to him was fielded by Reed Johnson, who came to the middle of right field to make the catch — ie, it wasn’t in any kind of overlap zone.

Maybe the kid just can’t use a glove.

I’d say it’s absolutely a long shot. But, given Fox’s bat, it’s a long shot worth taking. What have the Cubs got to lose – besides perhaps a few games at the Triple A level?

It's possible.

I’m biased, and I want to see Fox succeed in a Cubs uniform.

I’m not sure the Cubs have given him enough of a chance to emerge as a decent defender. Since he was told to quit catching, he’s shuttled from 1B to LF to RF, and now he’s working at 3B. I think if he focused solely on one, he could be fine. In 35 days, he might not be able to play an adequate 3B, but give him a year at it, and I think he might be valuable over there.

Yes

The Twins need 2B and a DH. But what could be pried from them? I’d love to have Cuddyer, Morneau, and Mauer.

One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.

by chilango2 on Jun 10, 2009 10:32 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

What a coincidence.

We have both a 2B and a DH available.

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

But the Twins are thin at the ML level

I’m positive their farm is teeming with talent, but I don’t know what would be useful to the Cubs right now.

But here’s my dream trade: Fox, Miles and Scales plus cash considerations for Joe Nathan.

One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.

Who cares what we get from them... as long as we can move a contract like Miles.

We’ll pick up the remainder of his year’s deal, just to get him out the door.

Seriously...

Miles will snag us no better than a Single-A Pitcher

And I’ll make that deal in a second

The Twins are a great opportunity to move him.

Their second basemen are crap… and they’re 4 games back in a crappy division.

Sadly... I would expect Miles to start all 3 games this weekend against the Twins for this very reason.

You raise good points

If the Cubs eat most of Miles contract, they will take him, and I don’t think this is highly-desirable.

by chilango2 on Jun 10, 2009 10:52 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

His contract really isn't awful...

It’s about what you would expect for an average veteran 2B.

It’s just that… he’s not performing to the value of of it right now. If we pick up the remainder of the deal this year, then it’s probably a very do-able trade.

Hm, well, I think Fox could genuinely help the Twins.

I fear they’d probably frown on Miles and Scales because of their age (among other reasons).

Looking to improve

I think if anyone takes Miles it’s going to be a charity/pity thing.

by Craig in South Bend on Jun 10, 2009 10:32 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not necessarily

I bet there are managers/GMs out there with the same amount of love for Miles as Lou/Jim. The Twins are much too smart in their scouting to take Miles though. They would for sure like Fox and Blanco.

Have you looked at the Twins second basemen?

Their starter, Alexi Casilla, is 5’9" 160, and batting .180

Their backup, Matt Tolbert, is batting .184.

I’d say Miles could certainly help them.

previously ugly things start to look pretty. It’s like having beer goggles, but in baseball.

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. This is the kind of fan I am.

Question submitted
Hey Joe,

The Twins need to improve at 2B, with Casilla batting .180, and Tolbert batting .184. They’ll see a Cubs team this weekend, who suddenly have a lot of depth at 2B. They could be trying to showcase Aaron Miles. Any interest there by the Twins? Miles has been struggling, and is just returning from a 15 day DL stint today. But he’s a career .285 switch hitter, and is playing under a budget friendly two-year, $4.9 million contract, compared to some more expensive options like Freddy Sanchez or Mark DeRosa.

Are you Barry?

12:46 [Comment From Barry]
Are the Twins in any position to entertain trade talks? The Cubs have a glut of 2B. You see a trade happening there?
12:47 Joe C.: Again, I’d be surprised if the Twins made an in-season trade to improve themselves. Help will have to come from within.

Don't beat yourself up too much.

I’ve sat in on a couple MLBTR chats and fired off a few fairly brief questions – none of which saw the light of day. I think it’s pretty arbitrary which ones get chosen to be answered.

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

ask the question as a player. They like that a lot.

Just say no to players named Aaron on the Cubs.

At least the gist of the question was asked. Somebody must’ve been lurking here and asked. Now we know the Twins won’t pursue a trade. Ergo, Miles shouldn’t be “showcased” this weekend. I wouldn’t hold my breath though.

If they're looking to improve at 2B...

Then they’re not going to be interested in Aaron Miles, who clearly isn’t good at baseball.
