"W" Flag Rules

I recently got a Cubs "W" flag. Having a Cubs "W" flag is not something to be taken lightly, and is a privelege. Therefore, I need to know how to fly my W flag, and I have several questions....

  • When do I take it down after they win before the next game? An hour before, or six hours? Do I even take it down or just hope they win the next game? :)
  • What about off days?
  • Any other rules that I forgot to mention?
  • Does Ted Lilly fly a W flag?

Should be some fun before the game tonight.....let's hope the Cubs continue their winning ways!

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

They used to sell the L flags.

is there a compromise that maybe you could come up with?

TWHS?

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

But does she do it in your front yard? LOL

Bummer...

it’s a class for exercise and no men are allowed to watch. But I’ll suggest that to her about the front yard. lol And then I’ll have a place for the W flag.

I'd say take it down when it gets dark

Agreed

At Wrigley they fly at night after home night game wins or losses, but I think its because they have a light shining on them. FWIW I have one in my office window which faces traffic, I raise it only during day game wins, and promptly take it down early the next morning. So for night games no flag. I also follow the convention ShangBadge mentions – an off day is an off day.

I stole this from the internet.... Its amazing the things you can find on google

1. The ‘W’ flag is only to be flown after a Cubs victory. I cannot stress this enough.

2. The ‘W’ flag shall not be flown until the game is final. Keep in mind that this is the Cubs we are talking about and fans should, therefore, never assume a Cubs victory (even with an eight run lead and two outs in the ninth inning).

3. The ‘W’ flag must be taken down at least ten minutes before the start of the Cubs’ next game.

4. The ‘W’ flag is not to be flown during the game.

5. If you will be away from the location where the ‘W’ flag is flown when it should be taken down (i.e.: at least ten minutes before the start of the Cubs’ next game, for those of you with a short attention span), it should be taken down to avoid violating rules 1-4

6. Bringing a ‘W’ flag to a game is permissible, but it is not to be displayed until the game is over. Please do not start showing off your flag in the ninth inning in hopes that WGN or Comcast will give you your ten minutes of fame. Once again, this is the Cubs we are talking about.

7. The ‘W’ flag is only to be flown in honor of a Cubs’ win. Sure, the new Blackhawks ‘W’ logo with the feathers is pretty cool, but the traditional blue and while ‘W’ flag is for the Cubs and the Cubs alone.

8. If you violate any of the above rules and the Cubs go on to lose that day, you should feel guilty and all your friends should ridicule you.

Careful Son, They will break your heart. And then stomp on it. But I will be a Cubs fans until I die. Its your fault Harry!!!

This is sweet - and I totally agree with these points.

I have neighbors who “fly the flag” and they drive me insane with their haphazard, sloppy flag-flying habits.

By the way, you should probably give some credit to the source of these rules.

I have one of those haphazard neighbors too.

It drives me nuts. I also have a neighbor that flies one of those cutesy little ones that also has the Cubs logo on it. Although I don’t particularly like it, it doesn’t seem quite as unacceptable for those to by flying all the time because it looks more like a decoration.

You could even offer to do the painting.

I'm pretty selective about mine...

I fly it after the first Spring training victory.

I fly it after the first Regular Season victory.

Then I put it away until September and hope they’re in contention when I’ll fly it after every victory. I leave it up after the game and overnight then pull it down early in the A.M. the next day.

I never fly it on an off day.

Over the past few years, BCB'ers have been pretty creative about photoshopping their own W Flags.

Lot’s of folks fly them in the game threads after a win.

It might be fun to post some of the better ones in this thread.

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. This is the kind of fan I am.

Ha - that's a good one.

I really used to worry about flying the flag the past few years for fear of an outsider viewing it as some sort of statement about the previous president.

does it mean distress like the american flag?

or will it stand for More Cowbell?

One more flag rule.

I saw someone in the neighborhood flying a Cubs flag (not the W, but one with a Cubs logo) above the American flag on a pole. That is just wrong. If the American flag is also being displayed, it should be on top.
