A little less talk and a lot more action

It was reported that Milton Bradley "talked" his way into the lineup yesterday against the Astros.  Milton then puts up an 0-6 night with 3 strikeouts and 10 runners lob.  Maybe, Milton should shut his mouth and let Lou do his job.  He hasn't produced all year, yet he's lobbying for playing time while being hurt.  We're in June and he's barely breaking .200 and is tied with Theriot for homeruns.  Not what I was expecting out of our new $30 Mil outfielder.  How long does Jim give him to get things going, before we ship him to an American League club where he can DH?

That's the big problem

because of his reputation, earned or not, some people are going to jump on any thing he does or says and find something negative.
I really hoped people would give him the benefit of the doubt and let him make a clean start here.
Of course if he finally starts hitting like he’s capable, a lot of the knee jerk criticism will disappear.

At the time, I thought the Bradley signing was for too much and for one year too long, but I thought he was going to be a good fit. The Miles signing however is a different story. I could not believe he did that.

At least the rest of the year.

This is ridiculous. The guy hadn’t seen live pitching in days. He obviously wants to contribute, and you conveniently left out the several excellent plays he made, including a diving catch late in the game.

If Milton Bradley is going to improve, he has to play. You don’t get better at baseball sitting on the frakking bench. We won 7-1, for pete’s sake. Who CARES if he went 0-6? I don’t. Because I know that he’ll build off yesterday and start hitting again.

what I'd love for Milton Bradley to do

is figure out where that line is, where he’s doing everything he can but JUST under the point where he gets hurt. Maybe that’s only 90% of his total capable effort, but when he goes 91 or 92%, he pulls something. He has to figure out a way to be less injury-prone.

Yeah, that'd be nice...

you said that Zambrano shouldn’t be doing things that ballplayers are supposed to do — hit, run, and catch.

I’m not suggesting that Bradley stop doing something. I’m suggesting that his lower body is so strong, his tendons and ligaments cannot keep up with him, and he needs to figure out what the line over which injuries aren’t bad-luck, but commonplace.

by drewishdrewid on Jun 10, 2009 1:33 PM CDT up reply actions

What I'd love for him to do...

is just go out there play. Work with the trainers to improve his conditioning. Talking his way into the lineup is OK but he has to play through pain.

Perhaps he’s thinking too muc. The late-great SWEETNESS used to say, “….if I think about getting injured, then I’ll get injured”. He played a vast majority of his career on turf with a crappy O-line, no real passing game and still dished it out.

If hockey players sat every time they had a boo boo, the roster would be half-filled with minor-leaguers. Kane played 50+ games on a bum ankle. Sharp, Keith & Toews all played many games each while hurt. If that were baseball, there’d be 100 add’l man-games lost, no 104-point regular season and conference finals.

I understand where you’re coming from but the player has to make the commitment in all aspects of his preparation for play and training or he’ll continue to be in-and-out of the lineup.

Sweet Lou for Mayor in '11.

by blackhawk24 on Jun 11, 2009 7:47 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree to a point on the play through pain comment

Yes, hockey players are mutants when it comes to playing through pain. A bum ankle in hockey IMO is easier to play with compared to baseball because your ankle is solidly anchored in your skate boot and in baseball, you have much different movements and pivots to make without the same amount of support. The way hockey skates are made, you can damn near skate without lacing them up there is so much support.

If you have a tweaked hammy or quad, playing hard may injure it further and potentially ruining your season. I had a tweaked groin once and I couldn’t push off with my left side at all, and just trying to walk was difficult.

I’m sure all the pressure on him is self induced. He is a hitter that falls out of bed hitting and he comes to the Cubs and he isn’t. If he could stay in the line up more than a few games at a time, I’m sure he will come around. Just like D Lee’s offensive issues that he had last year and early this year, you gotta love his glove out there.

Wow I'm impressed.

You guys are awfully forgiving. I feel so alone. Was I the only one yelling “You &*#%!” at the TV last night every time he left men on base? I wish I could, but I just can’t warm up to the guy. I’m trying to like him, but I don’t find things like breaking the bat very endearing even if it does show passion. That catch did help, I admit.

Bingo.

All things considered, Milton “picked” the perfect night to come back and struggle at the plate. And he made at least a couple very nice catches in right field.

As Cubs fans, we’re just going to have to live with Milton’s injuries and seemingly perpetual comebacks. Who knows, maybe he’ll be able to stick around long enough this time to really make a difference.

Players talk their way into alot of things. How many times will a manager visit a mound and the pitcher will make his case to stay in the game. Sometimes what the player says is important too.

I want Bradley to want to play. And guess what, he doesn’t want to struggle. He wants to get out there and do the job he was paid to do. That is admirable in my estimation.
