Well, my frame of reference only goes back to the 1980s. But Miles seems to be battling Tom Veryzer for the top spot at this point… and Miles’ hilarious contract may put him over the top.

Where does it rank on the All Time Worst Cub Free Agent Signings?

Obviously, the amount of money isn’t catastrophic. It’s enough to be annoying, though. But the idea of a 2-year, $5M deal for a 32-year old middle infielder with a long, illustrious history of 75 OPS+ seasons…. I think this Miles deal enters the discussion.

Dome makes me hopeful for the Cubs' future.

There’s going to come a day, and it’s going to come soon in the grand scheme of things, when the Cubs are going to have $12M coming off the books from Dome.

I’m starting to lose hope that Hendry will ever spend the money wisely. But if the team is going to be willing to spend $130M annually, sooner or later someone will acquire some legitimate MLB stars with that money.

I"m not saying that Dome is terrible. He obviously is terrible from time to time, but he has his moments, too. What I’m saying is that the Dome + Bradley + Miles money could get a real, live, elite player, instead of a bunch of compromises and flawed players.

That's on Hendry.

He may feel that he has to give Miles every chance to succeed, considering that he just wasted $5 million dollars on the guy, and considering that Hendry’s job will almost certainly be up for review with the change in ownership.

But bringing up Miles and sending down Fox hurt the team in a material fashion.

Hendry has an eerie ability to give contracts to his second and third-tier free agent signings which turn out to be the final big contract (or just the final contract) of a given players’ career.

Jeromy Burnitz, Jacque Jones, Daryle Ward, John Mabry, Jose Macias, Neifi Perez, Todd Hollandsworth… I’m sure that there are more.

If Hendry survives the change in ownership...

….well… it wouldn’t say a lot for the new ownership.

At some point, your GM has to be able to point at an offensive player and say “This is what I spent your $135 million dollars on!” The Cubs are making money disappear at an amazing rate, and have nothing to show for it.

1 prospect, no elite offensive threats. Some great starters, I suppose.

Bullpen

1 run in 5.2 inning. Comes out to an ERA around 1.50. What would you prefer? How about 6 hits in 13 innings. Lay the blame where it belongs, with the hitters.

Another 0-6 RISP

8 LOB.

I really miss our offense.

This team is

making me miss my mind also.

I gotta split and do something else

Having a public forum right in front of me makes me want to start ranting, and I’m not doing that. I think I’m going to abstain from watching any games too, at least until I go to one next Friday. I can’t deal with this anymore.

"I can't deal with this anymore"

No offense, Craig, but if we’re getting to the point where posts are reading like suicide notes, maybe you should take a breather.

lol

Nah, nothing like that, but I have a lot going on right now running up to my wedding, and this team is such a negative distraction, that I don’t want to put any more focus on them because nothing good is really coming from them at this point. Rather, at least, nothing that makes me happy is coming from them. It’s just time to stop treating things like last year, and just treat it as a game, or just as an interest in the background.

Good thought

and congrats on your wedding. Perspective is a wonderful thing.

Thanks

You know, I have a wonderful fiancee who is very supportive of me and my interests, and I don’t want a heavily involved interest in this team to evolve into me being negative at home, or even at work. So, it goes to the background, and I’ll read people’s comments on here, and I’ll joke around, or I’ll catch a score on ESPN, but I’m not sitting through these endless games waiting for this team to be something special. They’re just a regular old team at this point, playing a game that’s been around for years. They’ll come around in time, but for now, I’m done spending what seems like every minute of my day waiting for them to come around.

Miles+Bradley=another heart precedure for Hendry.

well I was going to ask for Torii Hunter but that would have been a bit too lopsided... ;-)

I’m tired of waiting for MB to get healthy and rake the ball. Maybe a change of scenery of the fantasy nature would help. Check your e-mail…

our starting pitching

is the envy of mlb; the bullpen is rounding into form (heilman, esp). our offense WILL be there. i cannot take a negative perspective at this point. we will get a wild card at the very least…
