Slowey to the plate
bases loaded, no outs.
I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. This is the kind of fan I am.
Bases loaded with no one out. I blame this on Todd Hundley :-)

No player came over to cut off the throw from center.
DLee should have been in the middle ready for a throw if necessary, but wasn’t there.
He did say it didn’t affect the play but mention the lapses in judgement from the team as a whole.

The pay is the same
When you’ve got veterans doing what they are doing both at the plate and in the field, with no sign of improving, I’m afraid apathy has set in. Unfortunately, the “pay is the same” whether these guys do well or put up zero after zero on offense and as long as that continued, unless pride kicks in, these guys are done. Hendry has to do something and remove some of the dead wood on this club. While hardly a tone setter, he can start by admitting his mistake and eating Miles’ salary. After that, who knows. There are a ton of contracts that are immovable on that team but it might be time to jettison at least one of them just to set the tone.
Who needs a stinkin' tag line? What are they for anyway?

How is it possible
To have such a drastic turn-around offensively from top to bottom…I swear we were 2nd last year in runs scored in all of MLB…but that seems like a distant memory…Where is our leader on the field…who will take some responsibility for the team’s slump and pick this team up…or do we even have that player on our team…
we traded him to Cleveland.

Hey
I don’t think it’s pathetic when you consider who we replaced him with. If we had a player who hit like Jake Fox and could field that we called up to slot in for DeRo then yeah, complaining about him being traded might be pathetic. But the fact is, we don’t. We have two years of a platoon at 2B where both members are either incapable of playing everyday or light hitting when they do. How is it pathetic to wish that we had a better player than Aaron Miles sitting at 2B right now?
And the other guy is on the shelf

Here's how it is possible
Theriot isn’t that good, and the one thing that he was good at, his manager discouraged.
Fontenot has been over-exposed by playing every day.
There was no plan to back up third base.
Soriano is a streaky hitter that stinks right now.
I can’t figure out Bradley.

by cowsarecool220 on Jun 12, 2009 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions
I won't blame it all on that
Giving Miles 2 years was stupid. Joey Gathright, insisting on carrying 12 pitchers . . . .
None of that has anything to do with the ownership situation. I didn’t think so until the season started, but — a better GM would help. Yes, they’ve won the divison 2 straight years, but they threw plenty of money at it. The farm system stinks, and I see no plan for making the parent club better.

Well yes, but...
Hendry has always been able to take fliers in the offseason and then make a major move before the deadline if that move isn’t working.
Without the owner, Hendry may have hadcuffed himself.
if this was still new to me, i wouldn't understand
We need Ramirez back ASAP
Healthy of course…I know some players played over their heads last year…but this is just sad…I really had high hopes for Soto this year…like many of us I’m sure…But Bradley and Soriano just flat out smell so far….Somebody open the window…MY GOODNESS!!!

Here's the standings from those years:
Only 2 teams (St. Louis and Houston) finished with a winning record during 2004 and 2005.
2004
St. Louis 105 W 57 L
Houston 92 W 70 L
Chicago 89 W 73 L
Cincinnati 76 W 86 L
Pittsburgh 72 W 89 L
Milwaukee 67 W 94 L
2005
St. Louis 100 W 62 L
Houston 89 W 73 L
Milwaukee 81 W 81 L
Chicago 79 W 83 L
Cincinnati 73 W 89 L
Pittsburgh 67 W 95 L
I definitely think the division is deeper now and makes a 2nd half comeback much more difficult.

so this team as constructed is as bad as it is right now
because of ARam??
Then it is not meant to be good anyways. Excuses and more excuses
not making excuses
Its just simple logic that when a big bat drops out of your lineup, other guys have to step into rolls that they aren’t there for.
When that bat comes back, Fontenot gets to play second and hit seventh, instead of having BOTH Font’s and Miles’ bat in the lineup
And this team isn’t bad. Are we great?! no way. It’s just not living up to expectations, but expectations that are more imposed by the fans and the media, not the team.
Albert Pujols for Cubs Starting 1B in 2011
Roles they aren't there for?
If Theriot just makes contact in the 6th yesterday, there’s a damn good chance they tie it then and there. That’s got nothing to do with Aramis Ramirez.

If, Chance
Two key words in your sentence.
I could say if aramis was playing that game, he could have hit two bases clearing doubles, and we would have won. Doesn’t sound logical does it?
I’m just saying, the 2009 Chicago Cubs lineup looks massively different with Aramis Ramirez in it, and it will feel massively different to the players and opposing pitchers
Albert Pujols for Cubs Starting 1B in 2011
The point is, that IS Theriot's role!!!

hitting with runners on is everyone's role
its part of baseball.
I’m having trouble seeing where Theriot came into this conversation anyways?
Albert Pujols for Cubs Starting 1B in 2011
You suggested that the absence of Ramirez put players in spots they aren't accustomed to
And I’m saying, they were in position to win yesterday, regardless of who was playing third base.

It just gives our lineup a totally different complexion and quality
baseball players have to hit with runners on, its part of the game.
But also is getting out 6/10 times
Albert Pujols for Cubs Starting 1B in 2011
I don't disagree that it hurts the lineup
My point is, they still FAILED yesterday in spots were heroics weren’t needed — just fundamental baseball.

don't forget that the team is there because of the paying audience
So don’t blame the fans and the media to have expectations on a $136m ball club. It’s not like we are in a rebuilding mode anyways.
You made that assumption, not me...
The offense as a whole will not slump, together, all year.

That's a mental thing
that they have to get over.
What I’m saying is that tactically, Ramirez being out of the lineup should have no effect on him. It won’t change how pitchers go after him. Since he was batting cleanup, it would effect 3, 5 and 6, but not leadoff.

The "Opposite"
It was as if Hendry went into the offseason as Costanza doing exactly opposite of what worked last year. He came out of it with fewer guys that have professional bats, a bullpen that is worse, fewer fundamentally sound defensive players and more guys whose confidence is shaken rather easily. Other than that, he had a great offseason.

When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. This is the kind of fan I am.
I'm going to put this on myself.
The last 4 game threads I’ve been in, the Cubs have lost. This is clearly my fault.
My apologies for dragging the offense down over the last 3 games, and hopefully my absence for the next few days will help.

You can put away the numbers and start scouting to find guys that can hit. Just like the Dodgers scouted the Cubs prior to the post-season and painted the blue print on how to get these guys out. It’s that simple.

Just checking, but
this is a guy that MLB is hitting .305 off of, right? We are now making everyone into a Cy Young candidate.
What happens when we face an actual top-notch pitcher?
Well, he is 8-2
Not excusing what’s going on with the Cubs today, but Slowey isn’t exactly chopped liver.
by Not Bruce Froemming on Jun 12, 2009 2:59 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah, but
honestly, you would think that someone who oppo BA is .305 is relying on good old luck to have an 8-2 record on a losing team. I don’t follow the Twins, but, really — most pitchers getting hit that hard do not win many ballgames. Does he have a great DP pitch or some such?
He also gives up more hits (by quite a bit) than innings pitched. In all other stats than W-L, he does look like some form of liver.
you guys think we have a good shot to score next inning..
here who is due up…Miles..pitchers spot..and Soriano…hmmm sounds like 3 easy outs to me
Jeez we've been making every pitcher we face lately look like CY Young candidates...

Sometimes, it just feels like the Cubs are having a train run on them, and they haven’t even noticed.
Honest question though, is there anything preventing the team from ousting Lou, or does Lou command that much respect that something like that would never happen. Or are there contract issues from allowing that to happen?

At what point though, does someone, aside from Bob Brenly, address some of the concerns surrounding this team. Lou on interviews is as mentally vacant as the team’s offense. I understand trying to prevent a leaky ship from leaking more, and the fact that they’re not that far out, but man, a 1/3 of the season has gone by and it’s the same old song and dance every game.
