Chicago Cubs baseball

is ON THE AIR!

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. This is the kind of fan I am.

Oh > Slowey

Did anyone else notice that the twinkies put all of their

big left handed bats together, Maurer, Morneau and Kubel bat 2, 3 and 4.

I would think they’d try to split them up, particularly against a team like the Cubs with only one lefthander in the bullpen the manager trusts.

Hey, it's a new century!

True

But it’s in the Twins’ territory. As the rules for black-outs are carved in ancient Assyrian on stone tablets stored in Mrs. Phillips’ basement in Cooperstown, NY, I have no idea if that should make a difference or not.

Miles

What is Lou’s obsession with playing Aaron Miles? Seriously…I wouldn’t pay $3 to watch this guy hit 8th in an American Legion order.

This guy doesn’t belong anywhere near a regular spot in the order, particularly against RHP, yet he is trotted out there on a semi-regular basis as if he’s the only guy that can play a sub-standard defensive 2B in the organization. Unbelievable.

Who needs a stinkin' tag line? What are they for anyway?

It's a wash, really.

Blanco was pretty bad at the plate yesterday, while playing decently in the field. Scales is a career minor leaguer, and Miles should not be getting $4 million.

by Bill Potter on Jun 12, 2009 1:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Well

There are probably a few thousand warm bodies in the stands today that can do what Miles does. I don’t find it the least bit convincing that the reason he is playing is because there isn’t anybody better in the entire organization. If that is the case, there are much larger problems than just the offense.

Very Maddux-esqu with his ability to locate his pitches and beat pitchers by using a smart game plan and not necessarily with overpowering stuff. I’m proud of him and hope he sticks and finally gets a win, it’s bound to happen so why not today!

Frustrating

The most frustrating part about Miles is that he’s advertised in some parts as a gritty, hard-nosed player yet he has exhibited exactly zero of the qualities that would support such notion. He doesn’t take enough pitches, he doesn’t have good AB’s, he isn’t particularly fast nor does he exude an inordinate amount of hustle, he is range-challenged at 2B and he isn’t a particularly good fundamental defender. Other than that, he belongs as a starting 2B in the majors.

by Shanghai Badger on Jun 12, 2009 1:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed in part

I don’t like Theriot at all as a SS. But he at least has occasional AB’s that are good and productive. He can run a little, well more than MIles and would definitely be an upgrade at 2B. As a defensive SS however, he’s atrocious. Balls clang off his glove with regularity, he double-clutches every fifth throw and his range is beyond suspect. But at least he’s a productive major league hitter for the most part.

Seems like the Cubs are taking pitches today

and letting Slowey get ahead. That’s what he did with Fukudome and Theriot.

Perhaps they’d be better by swinging early at the first-pitch fastball today.

Happy Friday everyone.

I really want to sweep this series. The Twins are very bad on the road, and we need a pick-me-up. And I have three different bets riding on this series with my Minnesota family and friends.

Wow

It really is hard to believe that this offense is really this bad. It’s no longer “early”, it’s epidemic. They just don’t hit the ball with authority on a consistent basis and all signs point to this continuing for quite awhile. If Hendry wants to salvage this season, I don’t care how many games they are out, he better seriously consider getting some offensive help other than Ramirez before this ship sails even further out. I know it won’t be easy to do, but neither is watching this horrendous offensive bunch.

Who needs a stinkin' tag line? What are they for anyway?

they say offense is contagious

we need to get Soto and Bradley going and things will flow. DLee has picked it up of late and Fontenot is starting to produce a bit as well.

The problem is the offensive hole we’re running out at 2B right now

by DartmouthCubsFan on Jun 12, 2009 1:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Well

Not entirely true. Miles is a problem but clearly not the only one. And we’ve been saying this guy and that guy are going to get hot for quite awhile now. It’s getting old and the signs of life are waning. Soriano has been atrocious, ditto Bradley, Soto, Fontenot and others. There are way, way too many holes in that linep and it’s looking more and more like plugging the dike rather than finding a solution from within. They need to look someone else and get some hitters and soon.

I saw Joe Mauer play baseball, basketball, AND football in high school during the Minnesota HS State playoffs.

I would have taken Mauer without a doubt. He was All-American in friggin’ football and had a full scholarship to Florida State to play quarterback. He had the third fastest throw from home to 2B in the world behind Pudge and somebody else. He averaged like 28 PPG in basketball. He is a sure thing catcher, a natural leader, and has one of the best swings in baseball. This is why I hate taking pitchers in the draft, I think it’s way too high of a risk/reward. It doesn’t matter, the Twins picked first and were smart enough to grab the home town hero.

do we need

the picture of the cat hanging from the branch?

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. This is the kind of fan I am.

Why

Miles is painful to watch. He’s heading straight into Todd Pratt territory as one of the worst Cubs I’ve ever had the privilege of watching.

Who needs a stinkin' tag line? What are they for anyway?

by krummy12 on Jun 12, 2009 2:09 PM CDT reply actions

LOL. Good one. Don't remember Todd Pratt. Was Pratt Blvd. in Rogers Park named after him?

by zevkalman on Jun 12, 2009 2:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Lest ye forget

Pratt piled up 60 AB’s for the Cubs in 1995, striking out in exactly 21 of those AB’, managed 8 hits (13 fewer hits than K’s by my math) and ended up at .133/.209/.167.

He also tacked on 3 errors a passed ball and threw out only 5 of 20 runners attempting to steal.

Miles is headed into that territory.

Who needs a stinkin' tag line? What are they for anyway?

Even if temporarily. I can’t imagine that Sori’s OBP has been .250 the past month or so. Give him some time off and then put him back at leadoff. This can’t continue though.
