OT Peavy out for at least a month with injury
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090612&content_id=5292238&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb
Now maybe just maybe we can put an end to this peavy talk. Would Jim Hendry really be stupid enough to trade for an injured guy, lets hope not. I don't like to see anyone get hurt, but maybe this will begin the downfall of San Diego and a fire sale will ensue. Kouz might be a nice addition until A-Ram gets back.

Yes Kouz would be nice
but only until A-Ram is back and then what do you do with him. There’s no other place Kouz could get into the lineup and shouldn’t rot on the bench

I suspect....
… the Cubs could ship Kouzmanoff to another team once A-Ram comes back.
And maybe this WILL stop all the Peavy talk.

Yes but only because you CAN NOT trade
a player on the DL. Otherwise some idiot would think it would be time to get him at a bargain price.

No, I don't think that's correct.
The trade was not finalized till he was activated.

I thought we were the ones that activated him right before that first game we had him. I might be wrong.
by Glacier on Jun 12, 2009 8:34 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
he was activated
and started complaining about not being a starter anymore. Then he was traded.
I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. This is the kind of fan I am.

i thought he was complaining basically all year about that.
http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/team/transactions.jsp?c_id=chc#month=5&year=2009&team_id=112
you are correct though we were NOT the ones who activated him. I really thought we were.

I actually misread that at first
I thought you said we traded for Freel after he DIED. Pretty easy to make that mistake though.

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

I believe you can trade a player on the DL
However, you need to get approval from the commissioner’s office.

Why ship Kouz off, though?
Even after Aramis gets back, this team still needs a backup 3B. It’s doubtful Aramis will be at full strength and there’s always, like, next season. Kouz is a guy with some pop (RHH off the bench) and he has above league average UZR numbers at third base (2.0/0.9 in 3,000+ innings). His is still the best name I’ve heard yet for solving the Cubs’ most glaring depth problem.

When will people realize that we don't need frigging pitchers?
We need big hitters. Anybody want someone that hits 40 homers and 100 rbis every year? Oh wait, we signed the guy hitting .200.

We have the team we have. Milton Bradley is NOT going to be traded and we know it.

His contract virtually guarantees that my friend.

it's a pretty good contract
for someone of his skill level, and I’m pretty sure we all know that. No one expected this year to proceed the way it has, and Milton Bradley is probably the most surprised.
If he doesn’t produce, then we have him next year, and then he’s gone — right when Lee’s contract is up, one before Dome’s is up and a few years before Soriano’s is up. THAT’s when we rebuild, should we decide we need to.

+1
Recommended. I agree. It is still to early to talk about dumping and rebuilding. Another thread talked about dumping and rebuilding to be competitive next year. That is NOT how it works. If you pull the plug, and go into rebuilding mode, that means longer term — I think three years or more.
by vonde6 on Jun 12, 2009 11:21 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
why are we talking rebuilding
When just last year.. we had the best team in the NL.. I understand we didnt go anywhere in the playoffs.. but the fact that we changed the team in the first place is why we are in trouble right now

I really do not think we will need to. Well hopefully not. If things go to plan to we should/could have an offensive core of Jackson, Vitters, Soriano, Soto, Ramirez. With potentially Z, Marmol, Cashner, Samardzija, Marmol to some extent. obviously some of this can change and this is predicting something years in advance which is always hard to do. Also, knowing how Cubs development has gone the last decade I’d figure that very possibly one or more can crash and not amount to anything. However, with that core, and being a big market team, we should be able to keep a competitive team with both young talent and some free agents as well.
by Glacier on Jun 12, 2009 11:25 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not convinced that Samardzija is going to be a big-name pitcher

Right.
This is the problem — he doesn’t really have to “produce”, all he has to do is stay healthy for one month out of the three and a half remaining and get on the field, and then we are stuck with him for TWO more years.

contracts should be based on results, not skills
hes results didnt warrant a 3 year deal, let alone for 10M per. They completely ignored all the facts in this signing regarding his health and DHness

Unless I'm reading this wrong, I do not believe you are correct, drew.
His contract clearly states that if he plays 75 games in 2009, 2011 vests and we are signed on to Bradley.
# 2 years/$20M (2009-10), plus 2011 option
* signed by Chicago Cubs as a free agent 1/6/09
* $4M signing bonus
* 09:$5M, 10:$9M, 11:$12M option
* 2011 may become $12M club option with $2M buyout based on Bradley’s health
* 2011 option vests with 75 games played in 2009
He’s already at 45 games. This is why I’m completely against Lou playing Milton for a PH here, a PH there, and when Bradley begs and pleads with Lou to let him play, then he goes 0-6. Not only does it hurt the team to play, it’s in his best interest to do so. Bradley needs to go on the DL immediately when he is injured. It’s a waste of a position and will be a waste of millions of dollars in the future.

Everyone screamed to trade the guy before a situation like this developed. Now they can eat that salary for the rest of the season. Hell, and that’s the best case scenario.

Peavy or Wells
Well, Peavy of course. But, you can’t be disappointed with what we’ve gotten from Wells at a tiny fraction of the cost. As many have said: Starting pitching is not this teams problem.

No! No! No! You're all overloooking a perfect opportunity!
TRADE FOR PEAVY NOW!!!
His trade value is next to nothing! We can nurse him back to health! We can rebuild him – faster, stronger! We can probably get him for, like, Neal Cotts and Jason DuBois!! Get ‘er done, Jimbo! And talk Towers into throwing in Kouzmanoff – and Hank White! We’ll dominate the division! We’ll dominate the world!
I’m mad, I tell you! Quite mad!!!
