This Old Cub: Ron Santo special to air on MLB network
Set your DVR's. MLB network is once again being awesome! Their coverage of baseball is in no way comparable to ESPN. It is way better! They are doing a tribute to Ron this Sunday night, June 14th @ 8:00pm central time, 9pm eastern. It is my hope that this video will be a wonderful showcase to all the Hall of Fame voters just how truly great our Ron is. I think this is Ron's year!!

this show never gets old
a few years back, I had him sign my DVD in St. Louis…
I got to hold his cane until his assistant took it from me and acted like I was going to run away with it.
It's a great movie and a fitting tribute
To someone who should have been in the HoF 20 years ago.

+10 as well
I’m embarassed to say I haven’t seen “This Old Cub” yet. But it’s only a matter of time now – I DVR’d it last night.
I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.
It is excellent - you'll love it
First time I saw it was at the Cubs Convention. Well worth buying the DVD later.

This old Cub...
…is very well done and something I really enjoyed watching.
Beyond that, it is to the point where I think this stuff is actually working against Santo’s HOF chances. It’s almost to the point where the voters are starting to push back because this stuff in being crammed down their throats. In addition, the talk of a statue is simply over the top.

The Cubs have nothing to do with the statue talk
As far as working against the HoF chances, that’s like saying Letterman’s monologue last month cost him the Tonight Show. That horse left the barn a long time ago.

I realize...
…its not the Cubs pushing the statue, but it doesn’t change the fact the media has latched on to this thing and won’t let go. The next thing they’ll recommend is naming the park after him.

The media?
Other than Gary Meier, who’s talking about it?

He's the only one I've heard mention it.
Seems like a pretty obvious self-promotional move on his part.

That's what I thought
Trying to endear himself to his new audience.
In light of all that’s happened at ‘GN, he’s probably not off-base trying to do so, even if I don’t agree with this route.

Yeah, I'm not necessarily opposed to a Ron Santo statue...
….but Meier’s marketing angle is just so obvious.

Terrific movie
This Old Cub is a terrific film not only for long time Cub fans, but I think it also works to inspire anyone dealing with diabetes.
As for the HOF, he definitely belongs.
As for the statue business, that is over the top. Yes, Ronnie was a great player, yes hes a great announcer, but a statue should be of someone who is truly special. Ernie Banks deserves one because he is Mr. Cub, Harry Caray, well, that ones debatable, only because I think Jack Brickhouse would be just as deserving. What about Billy Williams, Fergie Jenkins, or for that matter, lets give statues to Andy Pafko, Charlie Grimm, Gabby Hartnett and 3-Finger Brown. I think my point is clear. Weve already retired Santos No. 10 and now, lets just get him in the HOF.
You're point is clear and correct
And no way should Caray have gotten one before Banks. Or Williams. Or Sandberg, Santo, Caveretta, Jenkins, Hack, Hartnett or Dom Dallesandro, for that matter. An announcer. And not a competent one for most of his Cub career. Most of his career, a Cardinal announcer. Spoke volumes to the organization’s priorities under Trib Co. until recently. Not that they didn’t spend, but the carnival was more important than the baseball.
