Why do they care so much about us?
So with the Cubs/Sox crosstown classic on the horizon the Tribune and Sun-times keep running articles where Ozzie, AJ, Kenny, and even Twin Joe Crede are saying negative things about the Cubs and Wrigley Field. It got me thinking, why do the Sox and Cardinal Fans care so much about us. I have friends that are fans of both teams and they always seem to just LOVE when things are going bad for the Cubs. A friend the other day who is a Cardinals fan posted as his FaceBook status something about Bradley throwing the ball into the stands after the second out. They always seem to go out of their way to bash Cub Fans, the team and the ballpark when the chips are down. When the team is playing well, they bash on how it's been 101 years since a championship. Do they think we DON'T know this? I don't know any Cub fans that act this way towards the Cards or Sox.

For the most part, the Cardinal fans aren't like that
White Sox and Brewers fans are because of the “little brother syndrome”. They resent the attention that the Cubs get over their own teams, and they hate the Cubs because of it.
When Cubs fans show their teams indifference, it makes them that much angrier.

+1/rec’d.
I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. This is the kind of fan I am.

Having many relatives
Who live in the great state of Wisconsin, I can say that the ones who are Brewers fans are driven crazy by all of the Cubs fans that live up there (most who moved from the Chicago area). But you see a hell of a lot of a cubs gear during the summer… especially in southern wisconsin.
Actually, a lot of us are natives of WI.
I think that bothers them even more.

I would disagree about Cardinals fans..
Living in Missouri, people seem to care more about what is wrong with the Cubs than what is right with their team. When I go to the occasional (non-Cubs) game at Busch I see dozens of anti-Cub shirts. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an anti-Cardinals shirt at Wrigley.

The Cardinals fans in central Illinois
are pretty loud and pretty obsessed with the Cubs. Mostly, i think, because there are about an equal number of Cubs and Cardinals fans who live here. Of course, the proportions change depending how far north or south you go.
I don’t recall much Cubs fixation among Cardinals fans when I lived in Missouri, but that was over 20 years ago.

They are bad
Cardinal fans tend to be really really bad, but I love it. They get so worked about the Cubs.
Just say no to players named Aaron on the Cubs.
Agree
I grew up being a Cubs fan in Southeast Missouri, and now, I live in St. Louis. SOME card fans go out of their way to let me hear it about the Cubs. Especially when I lived in Southeast MO. I honestly think a lot of it (especially right now) is jealousy of all the attention the Cubs get. Also, I think right now, the Cubs have a team that are willing to do whatever they need to wind. The Cards won’t push as far. Historically, I think the Cards have always been the most popular team central (midwest) US. The Cubs have always pushed that, and maybe and have finally passed them in that regard. That is my two cents. .

You're dead wrong.
I live in St. Louis. There is some serious hatred of the Chicago Cubs here. From fans to radio guys etc. I don’t know how it compares to Brewers fans, but Cards fans genuinely hate the Cubs.
I dunno.
I’ll take your word for what you hear in St. Louis, but Cardinal fans I have met — in general — are respectful of the rivalry.
Brewers fans aren’t quite sure how to handle this since they’re so new at it. Some are OK, but most just get snarky.
Now, REDS fans — those guys really hate us.

And I have family members that lived in the St. Louis areas for years. Including Cardinals fans.

I lived in St. Louis for 10 years so I consider myself an authority on the rivalry. There are many
Cardinal fans that really hate the Cubs. One of the biggest Cub-hater is Al Hrabosky. He never misses an opportunity to put down the Cubs and Wrigley. There definitely is a complex there. Even though the Cardinals have won many more titles than the Cubs, they seem to be jealous of the popularity of the Cubs and Wrigley field. The Cardinal fans always fancy themselves as “The best in baseball” and won’t hesitate to tell you about it. Most of them see Cub fans as a bunch of idiot boozers who know little about the game. They aren’t as obvious as White Sox fans, but it’s there.

You're certainly right about the "best fans in baseball" bit
Cardinals fans just bathe themselves in that, even though it isn’t true. There are just as many idiots and drunks and people chatting on cell phones at a Cardinals game as there are anywhere else.
I don’t think you can say any team’s fans are “the best.” Some are better than others. I’d say fans of either New York team, the Cubs, the Cardinals, the Dodgers and the Red Sox are among the best. But I wouldn’t rate one over any of the others.
Years ago it seemed Cardinals fans really hated the Mets. Now that the divisions have changed, I think they’re more focused on the Cubs.

My favorite...
part about that “best fans in baseball” bit is that the Cards fans love to go on and on about how when you go to a Cards game its a sea of red. That’s kind of easy to do when the seats ARE RED!! Even an empty seat looks like a fan!
Not just card fans...
… its a Missiouri thing i think. The KC Chiefs fans fancy themselves the best in football as well.

Brewers fans are weird
I go to just about every Cubs game at Miller Park, and most of the Brewers fans I’ve met there have been great. Very friendly and knowledgable. But those people typically have been in their mid-30s or older. The younger Brewers fans, in the 20s and early 30s, really are a lot more ignorant — getting drunk and shouting “Cubs suck,” etc.
I’ve never really run into that at a Cardinals-Cubs game at Busch Stadium. It seems like there’s a lot less confrontation. A lot of good-natured back and forth, but not outright hostility like I’ve seen in Milwaukee (and bear in mind, there are a lot of moron Cubs fans going to those games, too).
Perhaps it’s because Cubs and Cardinals fans have to live and work together a lot more than Cubs and Brewers fans do. If you live anywhere in Illinois outside of Chicago, you probably know some Cardinals fans. I don’t think there’s as much everyday interaction between Cubs and Brewers fans.
Reds fans … I don’t pay much attention to them. Although interestingly enough, the Reds Radio Network does have an Illinois station — in Mount Carmel, on the Indiana border in the southeastern part of the state.

There is plenty of daily interaction between Cubs and Brewers fans.
However, from my years of working in Milwaukee, there are also a lot of people in Milwaukee that fail to realize there is a world south of Ryan Road. Those are likely the people that you’re talking about.

I’d guess the other way around, simply because of proximity.
Of course, there are a lot fewer Brewers fans. That’s not a dig – the team isn’t as old, and St. Louis was the only team west of the Mississippi for years, so they have a more established fan base.

The Cardinals fan base is pretty deep. Plus the entire state of Illinois outside the Chicago area has a lot of Cardinals fans, more as you go farther south. (I believe the Cardinals radio network has an outlet in Rockford, which surprised me.)

Walworth County
also has a lot of former Chicagoans living there (Lake Geneva, Delavan, Twin Lakes, Pell Lake, etc.). And Kenosha is right on the border. A story I read in the Journal Sentinel last time I was in Milwaukee said Kenosha had basically connected itself to northern Illinois economically and socially.
I’m surprised it’s 50-50 in Racine. That seems a lot more in the Milwaukee orbit than the Chicago one.
For a point of reference, I live about halfway between Chicago and St. Louis (160 miles or so to each), and the proportion here is about 50-50.

I'm sure the Reds front office doesn't hate the Cubs' fans
since they park the park.
I think some of the perceived hatred that comes from St. Louis or Cincinnati is also a result of radio, tv, and/or newspaper personalities trying to “stir the pot.” By fanning the flames, I think a lot of people get the impression that the hatred exists.
That said, Marty Brennaman does severely dislike the Cubs, and I think his message of dislike for the franchise fuels some Reds’ fans.

The Best Fans in Baseball
Having lived in St. Louis for 25+ years, Cards fans are obsessed with the Cubs. Growing up in Chicago, I don’t remember the Cubs and Cards as being especially important to Cubs fans, but it sure is that way down here. I think St. Louis, in general, has inferiority complex about Chicago. Many look at it as a far south suburb of Chicago.
The self-proclaimed “best fans in baseball” are simply among the most arrogant homers in baseball.

Not sure why so many...........
………….have rec’d this quote, Badger, because in my opinion, you could not be further from the truth.
I have one simple barometer to use when determining this and it’s called the “wardrobe factor”.
When in Milwaukee, how much NEGATIVE clothing/signage do you see directed at the Cubs? Based on my experiences, I’d say less than 20%.
Similarly, when at the Cell, how much ANTI-CUB items are on display? The number certainly ticks up here, but it’s still less than one in three that are playing the negativity game.
But head to St. Loser when the Cubs are in town and the level of NEGATIVE ANTI-CUB garb is entirely out of control. Nearly every other person is proudly donning something that slams the Cubs, and the number of anti-Cub shirts to Musial/Gibson/Brock jerseys would have to be 100-to-1.
It’s an inexact science, but to me this yardstick speaks volumes about the fan base. Everyone wants to praise their “knowledge”, but in my experiences Cards fans seem to know more about 1908 than they do about the players on their current roster.
"I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day." ~ Frank Sinatra
When in Milwaukee, I'd say NEGATIVE signage/clothing outnumbers the POSTIVE
I see anti-Cub signs in Milwaukee when the Brewers are playing someone else.
Not incidentally, where are you from/do you live now? I was born and raised in SE Wisconsin, went to the University of Wisconsin and other than living a short time in Shanghai, have lived my whole life in the Badger State.
At the risk of sounding condescending, I think I know what I’m talking about.

Well as someone...........
………..who attends multiple Cubs games at Miller, Busch and Cellular – to say nothing of observing their fans’ attire at Wrigley a dozen times or more each year – I think I know what I’m talking about.
Granted, my observations are limited to the games themselves. I don’t pay much attention to the stuff in bars or in passing cars, etc., so that may help to balance the scales. But if we are speaking strictly in ballpark terms, the Cards win the ugly, negative contest going away.

No worries, Badger, but..........
………..after my experiences, I couldn’t let the Cards fans off that lightly.
Let me add yet another perspective…………..
They run cornball crap on the scoreboard between innings at Busch, and EVERY game I’ve attended (+50 games over the past decade) they pit a Cubs fan against a Cards fan in some “game”. It’s entirely set up, and these gullible Cubs fans wind up looking silly in front of the home crowd. Further, whenever they pull some Cards fan from the crowd to win a prize, it always involves some “turn of the 20th century” trivia question, or some other crap that is entirely meant to demean the Cubs.
AND THIS IS BEING CONDONED BY THE FRIGGIN’ SHITBIRD FRANCHISE FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!
It’s not to say other clubs are not above such actions, but I’ve not see such regular and repeated abuse in other ballparks, especially not at the Cell or Miller.
In the end, I guess I’ve been feeling your Wisco pain in other parts of the baseball world.
"I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day." ~ Frank Sinatra
Condoned by the franchise?
Like, say, holding a 25th anniversary party for the 1984 NL Champs on the weekend the Cubs just happened to be in town? Or playing endless Bartman/Alou clips on the Jumbotron more than 4 years (and 50+ players) later?

It's the sports equivalent of the first blizzard of the year.
You know, when they send reporters out to deliver the “breaking news” that snow is dangerous to drive in, so slow down, here’s where you can buy a shovel or a snowblower, wear layers so you don’t die from frostbite, and hey, it’s going to be lawnchair season on the streets tomorrow!
Here, the routine is: Wrigley is old, smells, is small, and is filled with fans of a team that did not win a championship four years ago and subsequently adopt a cheesy Journey song as their mullet-waving anthem.

Every team has its share of jerk fans and, unfortunately, those are
the ones who tend to get the most attention.
Personally, I think, as Cub fans, we’d all be better off not taking the bait and sinking to their level.
As for my personal experience, I’ve found Brewers fans MUCH worse than Cardinals fans when it comes to the Cubs.
Part of it could be
Some of the traditions. I mean look at some of the other teams traditions
Can’t find anything for the Cardinals
The White Sox traditions that seem to be traditions from any team in the league…including a certain hockey team in Chicago….
For the Reds I can’t find anything other than they were the first baseball team

I went to the Sox/Brewers game on Friday...
…in Milwaukee and sitting a couple rows in front of me were two jackasses who in between every inning held up Cubs Suck shirts with Cubs Useless By September on the back. Apparently they thought they were playing the Cubs and not the Sox. Sad how desperate the Brewers fans are to start a rivalry wit the Cubs.

Those innocent Cubbie fans...
A coworker was at the Sox/Brewers series. He said there were quite a few Cubbie fans, in their Cubbie duds and several of those looking to stir up trouble. Not surprisingly, he said that Brewers fans seem to really hate Cubs fans.
I was at the Sox game vs. the A’s on a rainy Monday night. I sat in three different places – RF corner, LF bleachers and behind finally about 15 rows behind homeplate. In each seating area and as I walked around beautiful US Cellular Field I saw many Cubbie fans gallivanting around in their Cubbie duds.
I didn’t see a single Sox fan harassing these disoriented Cubbie fans, except for the Cubbie fans in the LF bleachers. These Cubbie fans weren’t content to watch a ballgame. They came to cause trouble – taunting Sox fans, booing the Sox and cheering the A’s. (Reminds me of the Sox home opener in 2002 when there was a Cubbie fan going up and down the upper deck seating section directly behind homeplate heckling the Sox and Sox fans.)
No doubt these Cubbie instigators from the LF bleachers went home boasting how cool they are, putting down Sox fans & saying that Sox fans are obsessed with the Cubbies. Those damned Sox fans.

You're right!
Just look at the theme discussion here.

And I was at a Cubs-Padres game at Wrigley last month...
…and there was a guy there in full Sox regalia whose sole purpose appeared to be getting the crowd to heckle him and keeping security busy. These people just thrive on conflict and calling attention to themselves – they have little interest in baseball. And, yes, they come from both fanbases.
I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.
those weren't Cubs fans.
Those were people who think that there’s only one baseball team in Chicago, and they were attending a game at it’s southern stadium.

I live in Northeast Arkansas
And this place is swamped with Cardinals fans.
In case you haven’t had a lot of personal experience with Cards fans, take it from me: They bloody hate the Cubs. I think that some Cards fans honestly want the Cubs to lose more than they want the Cards to win.
All my life I’ve been harassed just because I’m a Cubs fan, and I’ve never said a word to them about the Cardinals. It’s not just the young guys; even the older fans around my town will harass you to no end if it’s discovered that you like the Cubs.
And then they try to tell me that Cubs fans are classless and that Cards fans are the best and most knowledgeable fans in baseball. There’s a reason why I hate the Cardinals, and it’s because of my years of experience with their fans, not because they’re the Cubs’ rivals.
Oh, and the shtick about Albert Pujols being the greatest player in the history of everything gets pretty annoying, as well.
You have to admit though...
Pujols is pretty amazing. I mean the man has 22 HR and only 24 Ks on the season with 57 RBI. Lee and Soriano combined have 21 HR and 54 RBI and 104 Ks.
Pujols is a beast
I seriously considered getting the mlb package to watch him take AB’s. If I were in St. Louis I’d go to cardinals game regardless of the match up just to watch Pujols hit 4 times.

After this past weekend
I have those feelings about Joe Mauer. I also have those feelings about Evan Longoria.
Just say no to players named Aaron on the Cubs.
What are your feelings about Eva Longoria?

My sister-in-law married outside the faith.
She remained a Cubs fan for quite awhile, but slowly got taken in by the dark side. She started to make comments that it was annoying that the news always reported stuff about the Cubs first and just glossed over the Sox even if the Sox were doing better. I knew then that she was a goner. Her daughter is now one of those Sox “fans” that hates the Cubs more than she likes the Sox. It sure seems to be all about resentment. We try not to talk about it.
Thanks
I found out that she called my mother-in-law yesterday to rub it in that the Sox won. And it was her birthday no less! She rarely if ever calls my husband, but she has called him at work to do her “na na na na na” thing a few times in the past. I thought that was bad enough, but to do it to her mother(who is a Saint by the way) is just mindblowing to me. As annoying as it is, I will not do it back when we beat the Sox because I refuse to stoop to her childish level.
I know a Cardinals fan here in DC that loves wearing a t-shirt with
CUBS written vertically down the shirt.
CUBS = Completely Useless By September.
Kinda weird, I mean, who cares about that rivalry here in DC?

Here's the simple truth.
The haters out there simply don’t get why a team with an old, small, somewhat dirty stadium, is constantly filled to capacity with fans to watch a team that hasn’t won a championship in 101 years.
"Pounding sand since 1982...."
I remember during the World Series in 2006
I saw a fan on TV in St. Louis with a sign that said, “Hey, Cubs fans! How’s the TV reception?”
Even when your team is in the ultimate baseball series, you have to think about the Cubs. If the Cubs were in the WS, the Cardinals would be the last thing on my mind. I don’t get it.

Cards / Sox
I grew up on the south side as a Cub fan in the early 60’s. Since the Sox at the time were the more popular & successful team, most Sox fans in my neighborhood, just looked at me with indifference. I’m sure that all changed with the Cubs getting competitive in the late 60’s, though. Then I moved to deep So. Ill. (Carbondale) and until then I’d never given the Cards a thought. Boy, that sure changed! I was constantly (and still are) chided & ridiculed by their fans. All you have to do is wear ANY Cub gear, and total strangers will make a snide comment to you wherever you go (mall, restaurant, gas station, etc.) It must be the jealosy factor. I mean, it CAN’T be the competitve factor. I also seem to notice that Card fans get real uptight if we get close to winning. I think it would drive them absolutely nuts if we ever DID win it all.
