Where is Fox
Looking through the box score tonight for Iowa I noticed that Jacob Quirin Fox was missing from the lineup. Since he had played in the last 4 games and went 2-5 last night, it seemed odd. Joshua is already in Chicago and has met with Piniella and Hendry. Maybe VJ talked them into bringing Fox up early. It has been rumored that he was slated to return when the Cubs began needing a DH next Tuesday in Detroit. Is it possible Fox headed to Chicago rather than OKC?
This certainly isn't a rumor but it isn't unreasonable to think the Cubs might look for some big any lumber. Maybe he's coming here to allow Trammel to continue working with him at 3rd. Hell, he might even be Joshua's assisant hitting instructor. Any sightings out there?

Just a day off..
Fox has to stay in the minors for at least 10 days, right?
Has 10 passed already?
by MattHaggard on Jun 16, 2009 3:59 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
No.
It won’t have passed till this weekend. But maybe Aaron Miles will somehow go back on the DL — the 10-day period can be waived in case of injury.

That's what
I was thinking. Perhaps Miles performance on Sunday convinced Lou that his services are no longer required. Despite the win Sunday, our offense still was subpar.

True, but isn't Freel and his pal Farney going to rejoin the team soon also?

That'd be a good enough reason to dump Miles.

The Cubs won't replace Miles with Fox, even if Miles did get DLed...
that would leave us without any subs for the middle-infield.
If anything, Fox would replace a pitcher if he came back up.

I think the point is...
… if Fox replaced Miles, Blanco would have to start at 2B, leaving no SS/2B backup.
Unless… Soriano got moved to 2B and Fox/Hoffpauir played LF.

Your "unless"
would have to generate a boat load of offense to offset the D.

Correct...
And I’m not really on board with moving Soriano back to 2B. I don’t believe the offensive boost would offset the step back defensively.

I was suprised to see

Jake Fox isn't here because Jake Fox can't play the field
Those of you who naively thought he could be made into a serviceable 3rd baseman via a few weeks of playing time at the hot corner down in Des Moines are guilty of stupidity. Jake Fox doesn’t have a role on the Cubs. Micah Hoffpauir is around to DH in interleague games.
You mean, let me understand this cause, ya know maybe it's me, I'm a little messed up maybe, but I'm funny how, I mean funny like I'm a clown, I amuse you? I make you laugh, I'm here to amuse you? What do you mean funny, funny how? How am I funny?

Agreed on Fox, but I believe if Fox isn't around for interleague, we'll
see MB and Hoffpauir split the RF/DH duties pretty evenly as Lou tries to keep MB healthy.
if this was still new to me, i wouldn't understand
by N Oakley on Jun 16, 2009 10:13 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Let it go, Cubs fans.
Jake Fox didn’t play third base at the beginning of the minor league season, he didn’t play there following Aramis’ injury and he’s not playing there now. The organization just won’t go there.
I subscribe to WGN’s “The Lou Piniella Podcast,” and Lou commented on this issue in the 6/9 episode. He said, if Jake was with the team, he’d put Fox in either of the corner OF spots or at first base. He dismissed the idea of putting Jake at 3B because (and I’m paraphrasing here), “It’s a really hard position. More errors are made at third base than anywhere else on the field.”
The concept of Fox backing up 3B and Hoffpauir backing up 1B is a great one in theory. Pop from both sides of the plate coming off the bench and all that, but it’s pure science fiction. We just need to move on.

I pretty much agree.
Find a way to get Fox on the 25 man for interleague in AL parks, DH him and showcase him to trade for anything of value to the MLB club.
Having him garner multiple player of the week/month in Des Moines gains the Cubs nothing. It provides no solution to any of the roster holes in Chicago and blocks playing time of someone who can develop into a role player or solution of something.
With the issues the Red Sox are having with Big Papi, a cost controlled DH/1B may be just their speed.
if this was still new to me, i wouldn't understand
by N Oakley on Jun 16, 2009 10:10 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
They gotta trade one of those two
either Fox or Hoff; someone made the suggestion of calling up the Angels to see if theyd part with Brandon Wood, seems plausible as they have no use for him and Fox could certainly help their lineup

They wouldn't trade Wood for Fox or Hoffpauir...
as Wood is more valuable and they also don’t really have a place for either of our guys. Abreu, Rivera, Guerrero, and Morales fill the only spots those guys could play (DH, corner OF and 1B).
by SouthernCub on Jun 16, 2009 10:58 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
well you might be right on the availability
But theyve shown little to no faith in Wood, so one could question how much value he holds to them, and certainly to the rest of league b/c they dont play him at all

They are notorious for holding onto their prospects...
yes, they’ve been slow to give Wood an extended chance. That said, he’s still an upper-tier prospect, even if he doesn’t fit in their current plans.
I’m not saying that they definitely won’t trade Wood – just that they won’t trade him for guys like Hoffpauir or Fox (whom they have no use for). It’ll take much more (and a different type of player) to get the Angels to move Wood.
by SouthernCub on Jun 16, 2009 11:35 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hes no different
Than Dallas McPherson, Casey Kotchman etc etc. They have big name guys who never seem to pan out, I think he’d be worth a shot for the Cubs, however

Oh I certainly wouldn't mind getting him...
I just don’t think it’s going to get done with a package involving Hoffpauir/Fox. The Angels just don’t need that type of player.
by SouthernCub on Jun 16, 2009 12:47 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well I guess Im thinking it wouldnt take that much more
than one of those guys b/c of how little he’s been used and how short of a leash Mike The Manager of The Angels Whose Last Name I can Never Spell has him on

Brandon Webb sucks
He can’t make the cut just like McPherson and Kotchman. His 4th straight season playing Triple A ball and a whopping 2700 plus minor league at bats. And all for an Angels team that is perpetually starved for more offense.

He actually has been a pretty good hitter in his career...
He’s a career 114 OPS+ and was at 128 OPS+ last year. He’s slumped early this season (sound familiar?), but even this year he’s been a 100 OPS+ guy.
by SouthernCub on Jun 17, 2009 7:36 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
He's got a ton of power.
But he doesn’t do a great job of drawing walks and getting on base. And his defensive reputation is pretty poor – his career UZR numbers show him to be below league average, though, strangely, he was decent defensively in ’07.
This is something that confuses me about UZR – guys can look bad defensively in almost every year except one. This holds true for Aramis as well: He actually shows up as a subpar defender in almost every season except, again, 2007, where he was WAY above league average. I don’t get it.

actually, Uggla does do a good job of drawing walks...
His career OBP is 80 points higher than his average, and the difference has gone up each year (60 points as a rookie, 80 points in his 2nd year, 100 points last year, and 115 points this year).
Uggla’s problem offensively hasn’t really been walks – it’s been that he just doesn’t get enough base hits.
by SouthernCub on Jun 17, 2009 10:27 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ah, OK. I just based that on his career OBP...
…but, now that I look, he had a nice .360 OBP last season.
