Keep this in mind....in 2007, the Cubs were 31-37 on June 17, 6.5 games behind
"I knew we were in for a long season when we lined up for the national anthem on opening day and one of my players said, 'Every time I hear that song I have a bad game.'" - Jim Leyland
it isn't their record
I think we can all agree that if the team was losing some games 12-10 or heck, 5-3 we could say maybe they will put it all together. But they are so imbalanced the record is hardly the issue.

In '07...
I remember losing a lot of 1 run games. Most of these have been close, just no offense.
Someday we'll go all the way...

and they were still learning a new system and new manager
not the case this year

That team didn't have Aaron Miles playing everyday.

and there's
the kicker

Yep. Why is Lou still playing him. I just don't understand. I'm sorry...why?
"I'm not much of a chemistry guy, you know. Chemistry to me is a pinch-hit double with the bases loaded"--Jim Frey, Chicago Tribune, 1985.
because any day now
he’s going to turn it on, just like Bradley, Sori, Soto, and Fontenot
by WanderingWanderer on Jun 17, 2009 3:21 PM CDT up reply actions
I have faith in Bradley doing better. Even Sori will do a bit better and probably end up .260.
But that isn’t good enough.

You're right
but Izturis was the starting SS for a good part of the early season

Soriano wasn't hitting .229 and we had a 3rd baseman and a closer back then,

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. maybe not everyone
but we just need SOMEONE with our pitching. And hitting seems contagious – they just need someone to show some backbone and get the big hits, and hopefully that gets things rolling.

this team is
so bad. again making a 4-5 4.81 pitcher look like Greg Maddux.
And as Len and Bob pointed out, every time this happens, it just gives the next days’ opposing pitcher more and more confidence coming in. They start the game feeling like they are Greg Maddux, vs. this team.
pat says the mic was off, nobody in the crowd
(or on the radio) heard ron sing

I think Hendry talked Lou into Bradley, and now Lou is not getting along with Jim...
I think pretty soon one or the other will be gone.

Seriously Chil, when was the last time you saw Jim and Lou at the same place at the same time?
Where is Hendry during this debacle?

I saw Hendry yapping away on the phone last night in the dugout
but Lou wasn’t anywhere near. So yeah, I do believe there’s been a breakdown in the affability and work-related relationship.
One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.
I think it's quite possible that Lou blew up at Hendry...
something to the effect of, “you got me this motley crew, get me some players in here, like yesterday”. Then Hendry goes scrambling, while Lou continues to play what he’s been given, sticking it in Hendry’s face.
I'm a truth teller, I'm a risk taker, I'm like Johnny Cash - I walk the line...

I would tend to believe it was the other way around
just because, according to published reports, it was Lou who wanted the left-handed batting.
One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.
I know woulda, coulda, shoulda is a waste of time,
but when there’s 162 games of this crap to watch, it’s hard not to mull it over. Left Ibanez. Dunn, etc on the table, traded DeRo, etc….practically every move made was a mistake
Don't forget TWO years of Miles...

Lou is saving him for the playoffs.
"He can't hit, he can't field, he can't run—all he can do is beat you."
Maybe he missed that line drive
Because he’s SHORT.
My boss has a nickname for Theriot, Miles, and Fontenot collectively: “Keebler Elves”
that is called execution
The Sox are the latest team to run circles around us in hitting execution. 2 strike opposite field hit on the hit and run, suicide squeeze.
Lou has no clue about execution
but he thinks he mentioned it once during spring training!
"He can't hit, he can't field, he can't run—all he can do is beat you."
Somebody in the media needs to harass Lou about Miles
ask why he’s playing.
Then this weekend Hendry needs too get harassed about DeRosa. TIme for the chicago media to go after some people.
Just say no to players named Aaron on the Cubs.

Being a Sox fan is all about rubbing things in other people’s faces.
If the Cubs left town, I truly believe the Sox would go bankrupt or be forced to move. No reason left to follow the Sox at that point…….

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. This is the kind of fan I am.

yes, he's playing defense when he doesn't need to be
again, Lou makes a move that makes less than no sense. If you’re going to take Soriano out, you should have pinch hit for him, his bat is far worse than his defense, and as bad as Soriano can be in the field, he’s better than Fox

don’t. Sit sori for a week, let Fox play. That’s fine. But we do NOT want Sori at second. Really. Please.

you have to be able
to keep the other side from scoring more runs than you. Miles and Sori are hitting about the same; it’s not out of the realm of possibility that Miles is a BETTER 2b than Soriano is.

Fox at 3B and Soriano at 2B are equally horrific concepts.
If Soriano started at second in an All Star Game, it was because of his bat, not his glove. Remember, Dan Uggla started there last year.

on the plus side re: Soriano
the argument against moving him down in the lineup had always been his splits batting leadoff versus batting in other positions. Um, that spread is gone so…problem solved.
