Thanks for that.

Many here do not like Ozzie. I do. He’s a character, and wears his passion for his team on his sleeve. There’s noting wrong with that. I wish the Cubs had an OWNER like that.

And he out-managed Lou today playing " NL ball".

by The E-Man on Jun 17, 2009 4:33 PM CDT reply actions

I saw that shirt the other day...

Glad Ozzie has a good sense of humor, but that shirt is incredibly offensive.

by 10 14 23 26 on Jun 17, 2009 4:34 PM CDT reply actions

Agreed.

But not as bad as some I’ve seen around there.

by The E-Man on Jun 17, 2009 4:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Could you explain your reasoning for saying this?

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

by daver on Jun 18, 2009 9:36 AM CDT up reply actions

Why is it so offensive?

Its just a dumb stereotype. I don’t get mad when people say all Irish people are heavy drinkers. Im Irish and i don’t drink so i really don’t care. If your Mexican and you see this shirt and you let it bother you then you have other issues.

Fair enough, I guess.

I’m not going to expend to any more energy on this.

I don't get it...

Is it because he’s latino? Or is there some sort of pun I am missing out on here? If it is because he is latino it’s not really funny, just pretty stupid.

by JimboJet on Jun 17, 2009 8:10 PM CDT reply actions

It could be..........

interpreted that way, but I don’t think that was their intent.

If you had to choose just one characteristic that would get you through life, choose a sense of humor.

by Clutche on Jun 17, 2009 10:01 PM CDT up reply actions

That's what some people do

Figure out a way to interpret it that makes it “offencive” then rant about it.

Then to top it off, going further out on a limb to try to pass judgement on the intention of the object, statement etc.

Sweet Lou for Mayor in '11.

by blackhawk24 on Jun 18, 2009 7:23 AM CDT up reply actions

I disagree.

The intention is quite clear. How else is a latino mowing a lawn interpreted? I’m all for mocking the White Sox, Cardinals, etc., but when you start slamming/mocking cultures (Ozzie shirt, “Poo-holes” shirts, etc.), it’ shows very little class. Cubs fans get a bad enough reputation as it is.

by 10 14 23 26 on Jun 18, 2009 8:45 AM CDT up reply actions

So you're in the mind of those who made the shirt

…and therefore have the ability to judge intent. That’s a pretty powerful statement.

Cubs fans get a bad rap for:

throwing shit on the field
stealing the cap of a bullpen player
running onto the field
there just to be seen
drunk out of their minds and there just to be seen
going to the ballyard and not paying attention to the game

I know this because all the folks I know from out of town/state have these things to say about the happenings at Wrigley. Almost always, the comments are not intended – and they overtly state this – to impune the entire fan base. Unlike Mr. Marty B of the Reds broadcast crew who goes out of his way to impune the entire fan base IMO.

The people who produce these shirts IMO aren’t the fans we are; they’re there simply to make money. Whether they choose to do so wisely is entirely up to them however.

Sweet Lou for Mayor in '11.

by blackhawk24 on Jun 18, 2009 1:06 PM CDT up reply actions

So what do you think was the intent?

The ethnic implications seem pretty obvious to me – and I think they’re just as inappropriate as the Fukudome shirts last season.

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

Seems like the only reason to me

by Allie on Jun 18, 2009 11:03 AM CDT up reply actions

It's actually...

the third version of the shirt. The Cardinals vendors had the first version where it said “Zambrano mows my lawn.” then Cubs vendors had to make their own with Pujols and now with the Sox series they just moved on to Ozzie.

by CubFan81 on Jun 18, 2009 12:20 AM CDT reply actions

What would have been even funnier

is a shirt depicting Ozzie being the rat exterminator at Wrigley. But then again someone would figure out a way to show how that would be offencive also.

Sweet Lou for Mayor in '11.

by blackhawk24 on Jun 18, 2009 7:25 AM CDT reply actions

To be honest, I'd never wear a shirt like the one above

But the fact that Guillen laughs it off is great , IMO.

Absolutely

It completely diffuses the intent of the shirt itself.

Ok.

So it is supposed to be funny because he’s latino and mowing a lawn? That’s not funny. It’s frakking stupid. I am all for politically incorrect humor when it is hilarious, but it has to be done correctly (read: Gran Turino, Rescue Me, etc.) If you bought/buy/want to buy this shirt, you are a tool, plain and simple.

Where are all the HORRY KOW people on this one? They should be just as peeved about this stupid shirt as they were the last one.

By the way, I’m not latino/mexican/whatever, just against really retarded, unfunny shirts.

by JimboJet on Jun 18, 2009 10:23 AM CDT reply actions

No, it's funny because Ozzie didn't let the intent get to him

Try reading the coments before you condemn me, especially the one that I posted 3 hours before yours.

So in an effort to rid the world of racially insensitive things

you impune mentally challenged people. Nice. Glad you’re not my lawyer.

The word "retarded" is not permitted on this site in that context.

Don’t do this again.

Just saying the shirt is lame.

Alright, I trust that you're not condemning me

But I trust you can see why it looked like that, since you’d replied to the original.

Anyway, I’m kind of sorry that I posted the fan shot to begin with. It seems to have had the reverse effect.

If there’s much more hostility (from anyone; I’m not calling you out), I’m just going to delete the damn thing.
