Racial Stereotypes at Wrigley
When the Fukudome shirts first came out, I think it's safe to say that there was an awful lot of people here that found them offensive - and Fukudome himself didn't know what to make of them: "''I don't know what the creator of the shirt meant this to be, but they should make it right,'' Fukudome said through his interpreter after being shown one of the shirts Thursday. ''Maybe the creator created it because he thought it was funny, or maybe he made it to condescend the race. I don't know.''
So, with the Cleveland team coming to town for the weekend, I'm curious what you think.
Do you think Chief Wahoo is offensive?

Oh, I see.
I thought you were going on a different direction with this, being hosts to South Siders this week and all…
One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.

Since I'm not a Native American, what I think is irrelevant
but the fact that Native Americans do seem to find him offensive, speaks for itself.

I'm not sure what your point is here
The Seminoles mascot is sanctioned by the Seminole tribes in both Florida and Oklahoma.

I believe his point...
is the only people who could be offended by this (the Seminole Tribes) name are not offended by this name.
It is the righteous ones out there who are doing all the crying.

We’d still be using “Jew” as a verb and “colored” as an adjective.

"Redskins" is a pejorative term.
I can see why people are unhappy with that one.
Chiefs and Blackhawks (and Braves) — those aren’t.

Has anyone ever heard of the Fightin Irish?
IMO, you call your team whatever you want. If the fans dont like it, they wont come.
Lets get back to letting people make decisions for themselves and not dictating what is or isnt offensive.
I know I dont immediately think of an American Indian slur when i watch the Redskins play. I think of the Miami U mascot that was slaughtered for the PC Redhawks.
BTW my fantasy team is the Fightin Whities.
lets all remember not to take ourselves too seriously

The Miami U mascot
was the Redmen. And Red Hawk was an actual chief in the southwestern Ohio area.
It’s all fun and good not to take yourself seriously when you’re not the group being maligned.
And if someone raised a serious campaign to get rid of the Fighting Irish, Vikings, Celtics, etc… I’d listen. In Notre Dame’s case, I think they consider it a point of pride.

thing about the Blackhawks
is that they’re actually named after the 333rd Machine Gun Battalion of the 86th Infantry Division during World War I.
I know that military group was named after Chief Black Hawk who was from the Illinois area so the Hawks are like a one off of the direct Native American reference.
Not sure this really adds anything to the discussion but adds a little history to the Hawks.
by cubbot on Jun 18, 2009 8:33 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
...and it was Major Frederick McLaughlin
the original owner of the Blackhawks who was part of that Gun Battalion.
All I know is I’m glad they didn’t keep their original name. The Blackhawks were brought in from Portland, OR from another “league”. The Portland teams’ nickname was the Rosebuds.

The Redskins is the most offensive team name in sports
It is a disgrace that it represents the nation’s capitol of all places.
In general, I’m more of a fan of teams with a specific tribe — Blackhawks, Illini, Utes, Seminoles, etc.. — than I am of generic names like Braves or Indians.
Indians itself isn’t offensive, but Chief Wahoo is a cariacture. Braves itself is quite dignified, but that Tomahawk Chop is ridiculous.
Shades of gray people.

According to lore, the Indians were named after...
Louis Sockalexis, one of the first Native Americans to play big league ball. It doesn’t seem likely, though, since his career was short and uneventful.
Chief Wahoo is a disgrace, as is the name, the Redskins. We wouldn’t tolerate a team named the Niggers or the WOPs. As for the Fighting Irish, that’s really weird since many in the group being stereotyped seem to like the stereotypical image. Then again, when you consider self-hating Jews and other odd psychologies, it becomes a little more understandable.
And by the way, expressing disgust at such pejoratives has nothing to do with freedom or political correctness. No one’s calling for a federal law against bigotry and stupidity. If that were the case, we’d all be criminals.
Joe, you coulda made us proud!

Assuming that a team picks a name to sound like a winner,
shouldn’t the name Indians be taken as a compliment? I am not Native American though, so I’m not sure how I’d feel. Although I think the name Indians is OK, I do think their cheif mascot is tacky and offensive.

To me, anyways,
slapping an American flag on an “Indian” cartoon face (regardless of whether or not Chief Wahoo is considered offensive) reeks of a lack of understanding for what most American Indian tribes experienced at the hands of the American government throughout our country’s 233 years of existence.

Cariactures
aren’t necessarily intended to be offensive. Of couse, many are. (Usually, they are political, and racial.) Some of the earlier versions of Chief Wahoo bordered on insensitivity (Sorry, I don’t have the time to dig them up)
The earlier post on the name of the team " Indians" is correct, as I have read that many times over the years.. I don’t find this offensive. Redskins certainly does come very, very close to being very wrong as do the aforementioned antics of Braves and Seminoles fans.
I guess the low profile of the NHL has kept the Blackhawks out of this PC discusson over the years. But they have never exploited Native Americans over the decades. I’m not sure how you could have a more respectful logo in dealing with this touchy topic.
Here in SD, the “Aztec” warrior was removed from SDSU football games, but SDSU didn’t go as far as some of the decisions made at the U of I when it comes to Native American monickers.

Yes, incredibly offensive.
Ditto for “Redskins.” And I’m not an easily offended person but it shocks me those two have been permitted for as long as they have.
The logo and name of a team like the Blackhawks is a respectful use, in my opinion, of that imagery; Cleveland and Washington’s are not.
