Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

What do you think about Aubrey Huff?

Speculating here.  Ok, we all know we have lack of depth at 3B.  I read yesterday that Huff will probably be on the block before the trade deadline.  He is listed at 1B, but has play quite a bit of 3B, as well as both outfield spots.

Star-divide

The dude can hit pretty darn well.  For whatever reason, the Orioles and Cubs love to make trades with eachother.  Because Baltimore is in the AL, we have value for them with either Hoff or Fox, who could fill in as a DH or 1B.  Heck, maybe they would even take Miles.  What does the BCB people think?

I think he plays on a different team.

Which means he’s no help to us. Got anymore brain bustas? ;-)

Nice observation...

usually people read the entire post to see I was talking about a trade. :)

I would prefer the Cubs make a play for Jorge Cantu

I hesitate to say that because of the fleecing the Marlins put on Hendry last time the hooked up on a trade, but he can play first, second or third with good pop, and his only 27. Downsides- his OBP is bad, and he can’t play SS.

Gregg for Ceda

hasn’t exactly been a fleecing. At least, Ceda hasn’t done enough to make it a fleecing yet.

Or were you thinking of a different trade?

by madcow256 on Jun 18, 2009 1:32 PM CDT up reply actions

No kidding

Gregg’s been infinitely more valuable to the Cubs this season than Ceda would’ve been.

Close your eyes and picture what the Cubs bullpen would look like without Gregg. Make sure you do this in the bathroom, as you may be prone to suddenly vomiting.

If we didn't trade for Gregg

We would have resigned Kerry Wood

by Musicdude10 on Jun 18, 2009 9:07 PM CDT up reply actions

That's a stretch.

How would a team that couldn’t afford to keep Derosa’s relatively small salary come up with the $10M needed to pay Wood exactly?

by Wreckard on Jun 18, 2009 9:45 PM CDT up reply actions

You know, the problem is...

that you’re now able to start counting the days till you could see Ramirez back, so I wouldn’t expect much interest in taking on his salary. A month ago, it might have made more sense.

I think you’re at the point now where you start considering whether the Fontenot/Theriot pairing is really going to get you where you want to go. Cantu could be interesting. Maybe Christian Guzman. It might even be worth making some calls about Felipe Lopez. Pass on Huff.

I stand by Wilson Betemit

for that reason…. need a part time fill in that can be a bench guy when Aramis returns

by DartmouthCubsFan on Jun 18, 2009 12:45 PM CDT up reply actions

betemit

can’t hit though. we have lots of guys that can’t hit. if betemit didn’t severely lie about his age years ago i wonder if he’d have ever made it to the show.

by circuitclout on Jun 18, 2009 1:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Betemit can't field, either.

by Al Yellon on Jun 18, 2009 5:08 PM CDT up reply actions

But just because he can't hit or field...

… doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be better than Andres Blanco…

For the record, I'm glad the Cubs have a high payroll. Does anyone understand why the high payroll is something anyone should complain about?

by DGU on Jun 21, 2009 5:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh, I've never watched a single game in my life. I just make random comments on blog sites.

(Or maybe what I meant was that Betemit’s overall value would be greater than Blanco’s overall value, including his good defense.)

If true

sadly you would not be the first.

by lookingdeadred on Jun 22, 2009 8:43 AM CDT up reply actions

but to answer the question

i doubt the cubs could add that kind of salary for a fill-in bat. mark teahen would be a better fit salary wise if he is available, i’d think.

by circuitclout on Jun 18, 2009 1:28 PM CDT reply actions

Where does he go

When Ramirez comes back?

We have Soriano, Johnson, Fukudome, Bradley, Hoffpauir, and Fox in the OF.
Ramirez at 3B.
Lee and Hoffpauir at 1B.

I was thinking about it

They were talking about a trade for him on Baseball Tonight and I thought he would be a good option. I don’t think Cantu would be an option however, seeing that the Marlins still have a legit shot, and he’s better, and younger than Huff.

Cantu

has a history of injury problems. I do not think he is the answer.

by Don't Fear the Reaper on Jun 24, 2009 10:31 AM CDT up reply actions

A poor man's Aubrey Huff is what Micah Hoffpauir and Jake Fox each aspire to be

We’ve got enough of this kinda sorta commodity already in house with Hoffpauir and Fox. Lord knows we have enough DH types without adding another.

$136 million payroll for a .500 style ballclub. Good work Jim.

by BLou on Jun 18, 2009 9:59 PM CDT reply actions

Wrong

Huff can play defense better than both of them.

by Don't Fear the Reaper on Jun 24, 2009 10:36 AM CDT up reply actions

maybe so

but that ain’t saying much. Huff is at best an ordinary fielder no matter where you try to hide him.

If this deal could have been made

shortly after ARam got hurt, it would have made more sense.

by lookingdeadred on Jun 19, 2009 9:16 AM CDT reply actions

huff

if we could get him cheap i would be all for it. hopefully aramis comes back and is the same killer with the bat. but what if he is not???

by NOMAR on Jun 19, 2009 10:09 AM CDT reply actions

Again trading now is for a difference maker

Even when Ramirez comes back he won’t be totally full time until 30-45 days back.
