Rain Delay DeRosa and Wood interviews
make it even more obivous how bad it is to let these guys go.
Winning is about more than numbers. Listen to DeRosa - its about liking the other guys, rooting for your teammates, caring who is up and who "steps up" day in and day out. 162 games is a marathon, and 25 guys spending 7 months together become a familiy.
These are clearly two guys who love this team, love this town, and "get" what it means to be a Cub. And oh, by the way, the performed well, better than the guys in their place.
Great job, Jim.

Cry me a river.
If you want Wood so bad, pay him the $10M per yourself.

OK, $8M per
That’s still a lot of money.

Guess what, Gregg still cost less, and has performed better.
Lou didn’t want Wood, and so thats what happened.
this is terrible
not to mention factually untrue on the Wood vs. Gregg comparison
I'm really tired of this
I like Wood and DeRosa as much as everyone else but they’re not on our team, they’re not coming back to the team this year, so it doesn’t matter what they say now.
Thank you for the memories, good luck in every game but the next 3.

If by "gets what it means to be a Cub",
You mean making crucial errors and grounded into double plays in potentially game-changing situations during the postseason, then DeRosa definitely gets it.

now your just trying to find a way to make it ok
That we made such a dumb move in getting rid of DeRo

how do you know it was bad?
have the three young arms retired? until we see them and what they do in the coming years, the trade cannot be traded (like Dontrell Willis for example)
baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
Wood has performed better than Kevin Gregg?
Get a f-ing clue buddy.
I think you're the one who needs to get a clue.
Let me guess, you’re looking at ERA, and only ERA, and saying Gregg is better? That’s pretty dumb.
Like take a look at some stats then buddy.
They’re both closers, right? Wood has 8 saves, Gregg has 8. Gregg also has a marginally better Strikeout to Walk ratio, 2.31 to Wood’s 2.08. Most of their other stats are pretty similar, and Wood has allowed 4.66 runs per 9, as opposed to Greggs 3.99.
How in the world could you say, based on statistics, or anything else for that matter, that Wood has performed better?
The amount of revisionist history
going on here today by DeRo and now Wood supporters is breathtaking.
I absolutely loved Kerry Wood. But every pitch could be his last. And he’s put this franchise through too much already, always waiting for him to recover from whatever is ailing him.
Hail and farewell, both to him and DeRo.
I think a lot of the problem is that fans think if the Cubs left everything intact, they would have won 97 games again this season. They probably wouldn’t have, particularly when you consider how they won some of those games last season.
Hence, the romance of it rather than the reality.

see Im ok with the Wood move
It is more sentimental that I wish he was on the Cubs.. but the DeRo move.. not so much, talking strictly baseball.. that was a really really dumb move. Especially since we don’t have a real backup in most of the positions on the field, BECAUSE he was the backup everywhere.

I was actually looking at the wrong line...
So you got me. But still, they’ve both been pretty mediocre this year, with Gregg having a higher WHIP but a lower ERA.
I'm not saying they haven't both been mediocre.
When the OP tried to claim that Wood had performed better is what got me.
And also, consider that Gregg is performing somewhat better at a MUCH lower pricetag. It’s a no brainer.
You're missing the point
Success in baseball is about more than stats. After all, why did we have 97 wins and one of, if not the, most productive offenses in baseball last year, then lose in the first round, 3 and out? Where are you stats to explain that?
And BTW when I said “performed” better, I was referring to their performance when they were Cubs, not this year. Wood and DeRo helped lead a team o 97 wins. So far Gregg et el have helped lead the team to 1 game above 500. Theres your stat.
stinkin thinkin
If it’s Gregg’s fault the Cubs are playing .500 ball, is it DeRo’s and Wood’s fault that the Indians are ten games under .500?

How many earned runs...
…a pitcher yields is a pretty good indicator of their effectiveness, don’t ya think?
"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel
Not really for relievers
Though for closers it isn’t as bad since they’re less likely to be given inherited runners. There’s still better stats out there to indicate a reliever’s effectiveness.
Actually No, I don't
ERA is a lousy way to measure a relievers effectiveness. One bad outing can explode a relievers ERA and it will take months to get it down to a respectable level.

DeRo
is missed on the field. Wood not so much, even though I always liked Woody.
