Our Next DeRo

People, let's face it, DeRo is never coming back, and we really need to get over it. Now I'm on here quite a lot, probably about 15 minutes a day, 3 times a day, at the very least. I don't believe that this has ever had it's own fanpost recently, or has been talked about much, so I thought it would be a good topic to discuss. The man who I think the Cubs should go out and get is Mark Teahen

Teahen appeals to me very much mostly because he has the versatility of DeRo. He's played 313 games at third, 257 in the outfield, 24 at first, and has only played 3 at second, even though he was excpected to be there this season. He's at third now due to the injury of Alex Gordon, but will be back there shortly.

His offensive numbers are also extremely similar ro DeRo's, he's on pace to hit over 20 homers this year, has a career batting average of 270, has drove in around 60 runs every year, and scored around 70 runs each year. He can even steal a base, which he has stolen 3 of this year, and has a decent ops this year of 788. However, he doesn't take as many walks (18), as DeRo (25).

Defensively, Teahen also appears to be similar. They have posted similar range factors and fielding percentages. Let's also not forget that Teahen is younger (27) than DeRo (33). Overall, this trade would make sense for the Royals, who are falling fast, at 6 games back in the central. I think the Cubs could put together a couple of prospects, such as Fox and Atkins, to make the Royals happy. Teahen is being paid about 3.5 million a year, which would mean if the Cubs trade 1 million worth of players, would only be adding 2.5 million to the payroll. Thoughts?

My thought

I wish we’d just kept DeRosa.

Didn’t everyone (incl. players) say he was the team’s MVP last year? What was so hard to figure out about that.

Look

The outfield will not be touched for the remained of the season. It is too late to bring in someone that plays strictly 3rd (Teahan). Jim is looking for someone at 2nd who would hit in the 2 or 6 hole. And Fox would never be traded for a mid level utility player.

Teahen plays OF, and...

… also was tried at 2B during spring training.

I suspect the cost in prospects would be pretty high, though.

agreed

I was wishing they’d sign him in the offseason. He can play a lot of positions, although none of them great. Very good hitter and hard-nosed player. But, in all seriousness, they didn’t pursue it because — wait for it . . . he’s right handed.

I'd love Mark Teahan

Problem is Dayton Moore isn’t going to trade him unless he is bowled over by an offer. And I would have to think any offer would have to include a blue-chip middle infield prospect. Which we have zero of in the wondrous Jim Hendry farm system.

$136 million payroll for a .500 style ballclub. Good work Jim.

Don't be so surprised if Teahen is a target.

What the Royals would probably want is young pitching. That, we can give.

Strike Big

Go out and get Dan Uggla for the Shark (and or) Kevin Hart, and Aaron Miles. I don’t have any idea what the Marlins would be asking for him though. I would figure it would have to include both Hart and the Shark.

You really think they'd give up an AS for those 3?

Plus Shark has a NTC in his contract.

can't compare teahen to derosa

derosa had a presence on the field, both hitting and fielding wise. he had such great awareness that most players do not have.

sure you can compare offensive numbers between the two, and you can assume that teahen could potentially match derosa’s offensive numbers, but teahen isn’t as good of a fielder as derosa, especially considering derosa’s experience.

by cufban2522 on Jun 20, 2009 11:43 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

So Teahen must be a God-awful fielder

Because DeRo isn’t anything spectacular, albeit servicable..

Again, I can’t believe what I’m reading about him. I liked DeRo just fine, but I never was under any illusion that he was Ryne Sandberg, Brooks Robinson and Torii Hunter all rolled into one.

I think you

are under-rating DeRosa and the guy before is over-rating him. He was somewhere between serviceable and solid at just about every position, and was a plus hitter. He wasn’t a hall of famer (not that cufban said he was), but he wasn’t a butcher by any means.

DEJESUS!!!

by tomas21 on Jun 20, 2009 6:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

you can't compare because......

VERSATILITY. that was huge for us. that’s why I am “overrating” him. With DeRosa in the lineup, he allowed our starters to take much needed days off to come back the next day. We still can give days off, but DeRosa was a much better option that any of our infield backups.

by cufban2522 on Jun 21, 2009 11:58 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

DeRosa was not that great of a player when the Cubs brought him on.

He was just starting to come into his own. Maybe Teahen is starting to come into his own. At the start of this season, he had won the 2B job at KC, but had to move to the OF and then 3B due to injuries. When the team is healthy, he will probably move back to 2B.

by Don't Fear the Reaper on Jun 22, 2009 8:25 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

DeRosa wasn't a great ball player ..

.. just a very good one who was versatile and was ready to play anywhere any day.

He showed what kind of moxey he had last year with the Cubs and we are paying the price for not having him and using utility men who aren’t anywhere near as effective as he was.

Well, DeRo

is on another street these days. Let’s quit acting like jilted lovers and move on, eh?

Excuse me. I'm not acting like a jilted lover here ..

I’m saying

THE CUBS RUE THE DAY THEY TRADED DERO.

That’s a fact. That’s reality.

Had DeRo been in place, I can think of more than a few holes that the Good Ship Cubbies might be spared.

I say again for emphasis.

Don't see the Royals dealing Teahen.....

what with Gordon out for a few weeks longer and Crisp looking at season ending shoulder surgery. I think they still need Teahen and the only way to get the Royals to make a trade would require giving away way too much for a utility type player.

While it’s a lot of fun to speculate, wish, hope or otherwise think about who the Cubs can get to improve….over the last week or so I have come to realize that the present Cub team is what we will probably have to live with for the season. I would like to think that Hendry can do something at the end of August providing the Cubs have a shot at the division but, between contracts and the never ending pending sale of the team have effectiviely tied his hands regarding making an major trades/moves,

The present 25 man roster, players on the DL and a maybe a handful of minor leaguers will be juggled back and forth by Hendry until the end of the season. And I think that we will see the slumps that hopefully seem to be over as well as exciting, winning style of play we have seen the last few days rollercoaster for the duration of the season.
