Game Threads
Since I joined BCB last year, I've enjoyed very much meeting fellow Cubs fanatics and sharing insights, ideas, and concerns. Recently, I wanted to try enhancing my BCB experience by joining in-game discussions in the game threads. It didn't take me long to realize this was the "dark side" of BCB, and what a difference it is.
Presumabely, we are all here because we share passion for our team. While I realize that everybody handles wins and losses differently, we should all be on the same team, seeing as how we are in fact all here in support of one team, and one ultimate goal.
I, for one, will be staying out of the game threads and stick with just the fanposts/fanshots for a while. While there are *MANY* nice people that I see in there (Sue, Allie, Drew, Dan, Jessica, just to name a few), I see far too much insulting, name-calling, and downright rudeness towards others that detracts from not only my BCB experience but ultimately by game experience. Hopefully we can all realize that we were brought together by this fine site because we share a common bond, time for us all to be friends not enemies!
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Game threads are like the All Star Game
Both have outlived their usefulness and should be put out of their misery permanently.

Unfortunately this is an ongoing controversy that I doubt will ever be solved
Something about the anonymity of the internet just seems to lend itself to people letting their angrier, more aggressive tendencies take hold.
I tend to stay away from the game threads for the most part.

I know how you feel
I was in the same spot as you. Just joined over spring training and it is really a great place I found here. But I have been in quite a few game threads. I see where you are coming, but you just gotta ignore those people, respond once in a while with an actual argument and if they are still negative just ignore them.

Game threads are hit or miss
If the teams playing well (ahead by more than 5), they’re usually fun and lighthearted. If they’re getting blown out, they’re usually snarky but good natured…. But if its a tight game (<2 runs either way)… look out.
Sometimes you just need to walk away. I have. You can be critical and upset without dragging everyone else down around you. And you can remain hopeful without forcing it on everyone else. But not enough people actually do that.

Wait until tomorrow
People are too tired to post the fan shot/post they want to say about last nights game.
Expect at least 3 of them by 3PM tomorrow and inside they’ll be mixed with people saying they’re not interested in reading (obviously they already did), disagree with the post (and are nasty in the response) or actually agree until BLou comes in and tries to rip apart your opinion for no other reason than to make himself feel better.

The rudeness and profanity will not be tolerated in game threads.
We all understand the frustration with a loss like last night’s. There is no need to take it out on fellow posters. I remind everyone of this simple thought, that every single person who signs up for this site must agree to on signup:
When posting at this blog, please follow this one simple rule: Before hitting “post” to post your remarks, ask yourself: “Would I be embarrassed to say this in front of strangers who were physically present in the room with me and could respond to my face?” If the answer is “yes,” then don’t post.

true
yet easier said than done. During game threads, the Trolls all seem to come out of the wood works, and cause nothing more than havoc with each post. It is not always easy to ignore the 100th post about how crappy the Cubs are, the 100 years of losing, and then the Bartman/Black Cat/Goat garbage, while the troll is literally attacking people (sometimes by screen name). There really needs to be someone in game threads with the authority to kick trolls (not Blou lol) which would help a lot IMHO with keeping game threads more civil and enjoyable.

Thing is
That comes down to a “job”. While there are a few people who are in most of the Game Threads, there’s no single person who is in every one, or has read every comment in every thread. And there’s always that pesky “real life” thing that gets in the way of those who would like to do so.
The community here is large, and (like Leon) getting larger. Game Threads are long, and expecting someone to be there all game, every game, sifting everything during a game which they presumably want to watch as well is unreasonable.
Perhaps you could find someone who’s not a Cubs fan to moderate a Cubs site during a game, but what’s the incentive (aside from being “better” than someone else on the Internet)? Can it be done in software, maybe?

first of all nice Airplane reference
and I agree and understand that 100%. There is no perfect way to fix that, but there needs to be something to help improve it done. Not saying it is going to be easy, or will be perfect, but a little bit in the right direction can help a lot IMO.
My concern is more with who would you give the rights to? It would not be good to let someone with a quick trigger or one who will block someone just because they dont like that person.

It's not just the anonymity
It’s also that you can’t see a face or body language. Someone may post something perfectly innocently but it just reads wrong, and wasn’t intended that way at all. So give people the benefit of the doubt, especially occasional posters! Meanwhile I’m off to Atlanta to hopefully see a better game tonight!

Game threads
I agree, folks were getting hostile last night; We were all incredibly frustrated by what happened, and the way it happened, but that’s hardly justification to snipe harshly at a fellow cub fan.
A fellow Cub fan (since 1948)……..thats frustration also.
AND
Think about Randy Wells…..how frustrated must he feel?

This comment is offensive...
… being written in fake-Chinese dialect. Further, ANYONE should be able to participate in game threads without fear of being attacked.

I agree on the offensive thouogh I must say this...
I also agree on the “tough skin” comment. I haven’t been in a game thread in over a year ( that I remember) however it sounds like people have been acting crazy. While you Al, do a good job of attempting to control this, you are not our parent and are not responsible for every “child” in here. This is, regardless of what some think, a public forum. You do a fine job Al, but I would imagine if it were me, I would have simply made sweeping statements like, “grow up” or if you don’t like peoples’ opinions, move on".
Of course racial, sexist, and all other offensive material is a differentl story, but people who have extreme opinions and state them in immature and unproductive ways, usually get called out here and that is part of the beauty of a forum like this. I have both witnessed and been a part of discussions where smart, well mannered individuals set others straight by utilizing their own techniques and it is a great thing to see. Others snap back.
My question is, why is it your job to patrol every game thread so that peoples’ feelings don’t get hurt?
Sometimes, I think you are forced into a parental role here and Al, I know you already play that role in real life. :)

he is the moderator
it’s his job. He could probably select some other people to help out. Part of it is that since Al works so early in the morning, he has to sleep before the game threads are done, so he’s not right there to put out fires.

or he is in the Bleachers
and not watching the game on his laptop while there. Both understandable, and I do not blame him for it.

Whoa!
Not blaming Al in any way whatsoever. My point is that we are presumably mainly adults here and if we have issues, we ought to be able to handle it ourselves…preferably in a mature way. My ppoint was it is NOT Al’s job. His job is what he does to earn a living. this is a hobby that at times, must feel very burdensome when we cannot handle our own issues. As I said, a lot like parents have to do for their children.

sorry
didn’t mean to suggest that you were blaming Al. However, I do think it’s his job; and I do believe he makes some money off it.
I’m rooting for my team in spite of the problems. I recognize the team is struggling. I root for them anyway.

The money isn't the issue here.
It’s simple civility to other human beings. I don’t think that’s such a difficult concept.

That is exactly my point though...
it is a simple concept and why do you have to continually repeat yourself? If people can’t get it, get lost, right?

Best part is
you don’t have to go there. I found myself getting angry at nothing. So for the last two years it is off limits. Trying to analyze a game in a split second without processing is never a good practice.

You rarely see a "circles" kind of guy in the threads....
…but it’s interesting that he was doing the same type of stuff earlier in the night in the White Sox game thread and someone on there banned him after his first few offensive posts. He then, apparently, drifted over to BCB and started the same stuff here.
I know that’s not how you do things here, Al, but it seems like a good way to get rid of trolls early, instead of after the fact, having someone “in game” to head off the wreckage.
Of course, one can say to “ignore” the trolls. But that NEVER happens here.

It's a two way street
in that many game-thread regulars don’t suffer newbies lightly. It turns into a turf-war where the mama and papa bears somehow feel threatened by new voices or snark or criticism with which they aren’t familiar and then the baby bears are wondering why it’s so hostile.
A separate category are the trolls – they know the gamethreads have a history of quickfuses and bcb’ers have shown the inability to IGNORE THE TROLLS. Instead of flagging a post or shooting of an angry email – self-police it. Ignore them and they go away.
I’ve had plenty of fun in the threads before and generally enjoy the commentary but it’s become far too divided lately and that’s a shame. Oh well, I’m sure I can complain about Judd Sirrott elsewhere just as easily. ;p

Part of the issue
One of the issues with the Game Threads is that they’ve become known as the “real-time” portion of BCB. If someone has thought up a new piece of insight and wants some quick feedback on it, a Game Thread seems like the perfect place to post it when you know people will be looking. Sometimes this is regarded well, and a short discussion will ensue. More often, everyone’s wrapped up in the game situation, and has no interest in debating a position for 3 or 4 batters, so the poster gets dismissed with a snarky comment. They take offense, and…
I’m not sure there’s any way to fix this, as a lot of people expect real-time feedback on the Internet these days. Waiting around for a response to your FanPost must seem especially frustrating when you obviously have Cub fans sitting (metaphorically) one table over watching the game. Maybe a Twitter-like limit on number of characters that can be posted in a Game Thread comment?

I think we do a pretty good job of monitoring or controlling game threads.
1 – It is a different aspect of BCB, and it is surely not for everyone. It’s a running-log of the game. Which can be real fun to be apart of when the Cubs are rolling along, or there’s a great play, etc. But when we are losing, you’ll get the swearing, you’ll see the guys with 3 total comments on SBN that registered yesterday and only writing derogatory things, and you’ll have the ledge jumpers. Frankly, that’s how it would go at a bar or a friend’s house! You’d be swearing Theriot for double-clutching a throw, or for Marmol walking a guy on four straight batters. Some times I have to remember to “think” before I type & click, because I get heated during the game.
2 – The troll thing is hard to deal with because there’s not much that can be done to stop them a priori. They come in, get the crowd riled up, and then get booted. I like to make a few swings at ‘em then just ignore them the entire time, because it’s ruining my gaming experience.
3 – The game threads are apart of the “community” of BCB more than anything else, and some times I have to remember to be inviting to names or persons I don’t know, because it may be their first time in the game threads, and unfamiliar with “TWSS” or “GameBoard” or “Jimmy! Timmy!” silly stuff we do. It is a fun place to watch the game, but can be silly for those unfamiliar.
