BCB amnesty day

We are all wrong. These last couple days have felt really good and I think it's time that we all come forward, confess our Cubs sins, and move on with the rest of the season.

Allow me to start. I was dead wrong about Kevin Gregg. Two weeks ago I was calling for Gregg to be a setup man for Guzman. I couldn't be happier to be wrong. Sorta like how Al said last year Edmonds was D.O.N.E. or how Clutche and I were called out earlier this year for our Hoff support on April Fools.

This isn't intended to be a forum for "I told you so," rather just a place for you to admit your wrong doings and be forgiven.

Therefore I challenge you. What have you been wrong about?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Kevin Gregg

I thought he was quite useless. But of late he’s been doing good.

Now if I can just be proved terribly wrong about MB. :)

I was wrong about the bullpen.

They’re not as bad as I thought overall.

I’m concerned about Charlie Marbles right now, but the rest of the ’pen has been pretty steady of late.

3 wins walk-off style are nice. 3 wins after 8.5 innings would have been even nicer. I’ll take ’em any way they can be had. But please, can we layoff these types of posts until the Cubs are 10-up in the loss column? Yikes!

I was wrong about Soriano..

Nearly a month ago, I said that the cubs would start hitting, and pointed to Sori’s .258 average as aberrantly low. His average has since gotten closer to the Mendoza line than his career average. Glad I wasn’t wrong about the other guys though. (incidently, I still believe that Sori will start hitting, unless he’s hurt).

I'll jump on the "I was wrong about Kevin Gregg" bandwagon.

Since he nearly blew a 5-0 lead on May 16, he’s made 14 appearances.

15 IP, 11 H, 4 BB, 12 K, 2 ER, 1.20 ERA, 2-0, 4 saves.

He’s done an excellent job for the last month. Keep up the good work.

I was wrong

…I had no idea the Cubs would do something that they hadn’t done in 63 years. I should have seen that coming. I should have seen 5 run deficits erased in the final two innings in back to back games. That third walk off was just gravy.

Mock me all you want, aside from the last three games, if you can say that you’ve seen “signs” that this offense is legitimate, that’s your call. I haven’t seen it yet but what do I know. The last three games are a start for sure, hopefully that is indeed a sign of things to come rather than a blip on the radar.

Why you guys have an ounce of concern about what I say or don’t say continues to floor me. Quite frankly, I could care less who says what and when. This is a forum of observations and opinions…nobody is graded on it…ever.

On the other side

I was wrong that this team was dead in the water…at least for now. The three recent wins have seemed to energize them a bit but obviously these can’t continue forever. I’ll be ready to admit they are clearly out of the woods when they start winning games with more consistency…not 3 at a time, lose four, win 2, lose 4. When the offense starts getting more productioin out of more guys, I will admit to whatever you want…either way, my observations remain as such.

they won their fourth in a row today, with plenty of runs due to lots of batters, and no come from behind win.

I’ll believe you’ve changed when you visit game threads when we’re not losing.

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. And I apologize if I seemed to be mocking you — I was trying to make a light joke, but yeah if I’m honest, there was an element of mocking there, so I apologize for that.

However, if you’re seeing only lucky wins and not any signs that the offense is turning a corner (maybe not all players but a number of them), then I think you’re glasses are blacker than mine are rose-colored.

I might as well chime in and admit 2 Cubbie Sins...

First and foremost, I had given up on Derrek Lee about a month ago. I was begging to Micah to Jake to get starts, and I even had the conversation with my dad (who is literally the biggest DLee fan around, not sure why, but he’s been singing his praises since 2003) about how he was totally useless and should be a bench player in favor of Micah… I’m so sorry I gave up on you, Derrek – thank you so much for finding 2005 all over again.

Secondly, I actually stopped watching the games for a while. It was so bad for a while there I was actually checking the score the NEXT DAY instead of following every pitch possible. Especially after the lost the 2nd game after the 8-game losing streak… that was the clincher in my mind… I had totally given up at that point. I finally started seriously watching maybe 5 or 6 games ago, and I’m so glad I did. Eventhough we haven’t been perfect, it’s been like watching a new team… the Cardiac COMEBACK Cubs are back, and it’s so great to see :-)

by lswaidz on Jun 21, 2009 7:36 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Was wrong about DLee...

I was vocal about wanting Hoff to start until he proved he couldn’t keep up his pace. Glad to be wrong about that!

Also wrong about Sori… I said early this year that he was on his way to an MVP type of season. Clearly that was off.

by kanderber on Jun 21, 2009 7:44 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Mea Culpa

1) Derrek Lee – a couple weeks ago I was moaning about his NTC and telling everyone within listening distance “he’s past it”. Not sure if he got a hold of Popeye’s spinach or Z’s energy drinks but he’s come on like gangbusters and propping up the team.

2) Closing the Game Threads – yesterday was the first time in a while that I joined in during a game and it was a lot of fun! Funny commentary and anecdotes, and best of all we won. Everyone comported themselves very well, and I hope that trend continues (finger pointed right at myself).

3) Going to games in person – sure, they cater to the casual fan and there’s always something blasting over the PA encouraging people to make noise. But I was wrong to say that going to a game in person was insulting to one’s intelligence and an exercise in crass pandering. I still like going to ST in Mesa, and there’s some new parks I want to go see, and of course there’s the Friendly Confines.

I confess that I was wrong about Kevin Gregg

About a month ago, I wrote a post “120 games left-what I’d do”, and one of my suggestions was making Carlos Marmol the closer instead of Gregg. Gregg has been very solid, while Marmol has struggled with his command considerably.

by cubswgnrocks on Jun 21, 2009 10:06 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I was not here for the start of this season but

I will admit to being wrong about Marmol, who I thought would be dominant this year, and about about Guzman, who I did not expect to amount to much of anything. I was also wrong about Bradley. I did not want them to sign him as he is too unstable, physically and emotionally (I was hoping for Abreu), but I assumed when he was healthy, Bradley would be the hitter he has been throughout his career, and he clearly has not been, although there are limited signs he may be getting better.

we’re at game 64….98 to go. Take ‘em for what they’re worth, let’s see ‘em go out and win today! Too much kneejerk reaction around here. It’s 3 wins in a row, now let’s see as 4th and then take it from there.

So whoever is admitting being “wrong” now cannot come back in a few weeks and say, I told ya so.

I didn't make predictions

on this team or any of the players. I will give all players a chance to prove themselves. I will say my biggest disappointment this season has been in Lou. I don’t even know what to think about him.

by sue369 on Jun 21, 2009 10:36 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I have a theory, Sue

I think the reason why Lou seems lost is because he picked the additions to this year’s team and has a hard time accepting how bad they are. It has to be a blow to his ego, seeing Aaron Miles struggle and Milton Bradley hitting without authority and Aaron Heilman walking the ballpark (although Hendry has also loved the guy for years). Maybe Lou has been thinking “Wow, I’m not as good at evaluating talent as I thought I was, and I’ve hurt the team.” Hard to handle for a proud guy like Lou.

by CaliCub on Jun 21, 2009 11:49 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree to a point

But I think what has happened is that the player the Cubs could least afford to lose, Aramis Ramirez, has really hurt this club.

Aaron Heilman, and to a lesser extent Aaron Miles, were not supposed to be major factors. Coming in, I expected Heilman to be our seventh inning guy and Miles to see anywhere from 40-60 games depending on how well Fontenot did at 2B. Needless to say, Miles has seen more action than anticipated and Heilman has struggled at times.

The injury has forced Lou to move players around that he didn’t anticipate. The problem is that Lou doesn’t really know who to play at 3B full time. I think it has created a domino effect for both the offense and defense.

In a lot of ways, I see this team very similar to the 2007 team in that Lou is trying to figure out who can play where and for how long (3B, 2B, OF and relief roles and batting orders.) There has been a lot of roster turnover, since the end of last year.

Hendry likes ND guys. We have the Shark and Heilman, and in the minors we had Grant Johnson. In the long term, the jury is still out.

Just remember, winning cures all ills. If we win 93 games and win the division by 3 games, all will be forgiven.

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. -- George Santayana (1863-1952)

Well since I have been EXTREMELY disappointed in Lou since last April

I can’t say anything has changed for me. I was freaked out by the slow start of many of our batters but still hold to my theory that
hitters wake up but bad pitching is forever.

I was NOT crazy with the MB deal at all, but I said before it happened that if it did, he’s be a Cub and I’d root him on. I have done so, and as predicted, he was as fragile as a canary (almost as much as Harden) and has had to be handled with kid gloves. But he’s holding on and trying to talk with his bat, which is all any of us hope for.

When we were down

Against the Sox in the Thursday game, I was honestly ready to hang up the season. If any of you knew me, you would know Im like the most optimistic person. Im one to believe it’s never over until its over, even if its the bears down 10 with a minute left and kyle orton as our qb (yes, that is pathetic, bc its kyle freakin orton). You get my point. That was as low as 2007, just before Lou blew up. I was devastated. All it took was one inning, and look at us now: We’ve won 4 in a row.

Two

1. Kevin Gregg, never thought he would replace Wood, he has actually thrown better than Wood. Please keep it up.
2. Bradley, I never thought he would hit above .220 this year, he still needs to hit better, however he is starting to come around. Don’t go on the DL

Last year mid-season

I did a post like this saying I was wrong about Fontenot. This year, I’ve been a believer in Fonty and am slightly tempted to throw up my hands and say I was wrong again. But I’m still believing. I think he’s going to pull out of this, at least when he gets back to playing just 2B v. just RHP.

The guy I was totally wrong about was Raul Ibanez, who has been murdering the ball this year. I thought giving Bradley a deal with a time-played clause that could knock his deal down to two years was much better than signing Ibanez for three. But that clause has given Bradley incentive to play injured and therefore underperform miserably. It would have been better to sign him for three years or to have signed Ibanez.

Blanco can't hit.

Every now and then he gets a hit in an important situation, as he did on Saturday. But I think we’d all be calling for him to be benched if he played every day.

His defense, however, is outstanding.

I didn't think DLee would be so good

Though his hot streak will even out eventually.

I was wrong about Dome at the start of the season, but he has become what I thought he would, just took longer.

I certainly didn’t think Kevin Gregg would be respectable.

Just say no to players named Aaron on the Cubs.

Like the post

I have to admit at this point I actually have a more optimistic taste rather than the last month.

My sin was the dismissing of DLee as a middle of the order hitter. I wanted him moved down to 6 in the order and given a couple of days off a week for Hoff to play. In the immortal words of some preacher…I have sinned, please forgive me.

I was wrong about D-Lee

I thought he was turning into an old Julio Franco, losing bat speed and pitch selection. He’s turning into Paul Konerko with a better glove. And carrying this Cubs team like he never has before.

It's interesting that so many people were wrong about DLee.

I should have thrown in a poll when I first put up this post. I was convinced most people would have said Gregg.

I'm surprised people think they are "wrong" on Gregg at all.

But then I was mostly out for a few weeks busy with other things. Maybe I missed a lot of Gregg backlash. Fwiw, I’ve thought and continue to think that he’ll be a fair reliever whose previous stats made him look better than he’d be in Wrigley, because all of his parks held down HRs before. He’ll go through good streaks and bad streaks.

Predictions and Expectations

I stopped trying to make predictions. I’ve been a die hard Cub fan since I was a kid, like many of you coming home from school and catching the last few innings on WGN. My first Cubs game was a win against the Pirates in the Stargell days. The final score was 15-3. I can only remember one name from that team, Jerry Martin, because he hit a home run. I think Kingman was on that team, too, but I don’t remember for sure.

Anyway, one of the things I’ve learned through all of those years is that there are very few things you can count on in baseball. You can use statistical analysis (which I appreciate from the users here who post such things) to project a probability, but you never know for sure what’s going to happen. Sometimes a no-name comes through; sometimes a hero falls short. There is only the moment. Baseball is a beautiful thing.

Another thing I’ve learned is that I’m not going to pretend that I know better than the professionals. It’s fun to speculate and second guess, but we always have the benefit of hindsight. Management doesn’t. They make mistakes and we need to accept that. Lou said he was mystified as to why the players weren’t hitting. We don’t know what was going on behind the scenes. For all we know, he was working with the hitters and Perry every day. Sometimes change for the sake of change IS a good thing because it helps everyone to refocus. In this case, maybe it relieved the pressure of high expectations or got the guys thinking back to basics. We all have high expectations for this team, but we shouldn’t let it take away too much from our enjoyment of the game. There are no slackers on this team. The frustration we feel is nothing compared to what the players feel with the weight of all Cubdom on their shoulders. To me, as long as they are giving it their best effort and battling to the last out, I’m satisfied; perhaps disappointed in a loss, but not disappointed in the players.

I try not make personal attacks on the players like calling Soto fat or saying someone sucks (except for Korey :) ) or is lazy or stupid. Criticizing play is one thing, but sometimes the personal attacks on the players and on each other get way out of control. The booing is also out of control. I realize that it’s everyone’s right to boo if they wish, but when a guy strikes out with a runner on third and less than two outs, do you think he doesn’t know he screwed up? What does booing accomplish? The players try to be oblivious to such things, but at some point it has to bother them. They’re doing their best, and 40,000 plus people are coming down on them. That being said, if a player IS slacking, boo away. Slackers deserve no mercy.

My mea culpa is the disappointment about letting Kerry Wood go. I thought it was a big mistake. I think he is one of the classier guys in the game and I wish him continued success. However, Gregg is doing a pretty solid job.

Sorry for the length and rambling nature of this post. I do wish to say that although I don’t post often, I am here nearly every day and for the most part I enjoy the back and forth and give and take of this site. There are a lot of funny and intelligent people contributing here.

Agreed on the booing.

I have very rarely boo’ed a Cub in my life. You’re absolutely right, it doesn’t help a damn bit.

As for the Kerry Wood thing, I’m glad to say I wasn’t wrong on that one. Closers are so ridiculously overrated in the game today. Paying a guy $10 mil a year to pitch maybe 50-70 times is insanity if you ask me.

"Pounding sand since 1982...."

by cubswynn on Jun 22, 2009 11:39 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not sure what your asking.

Starting pitching is much more important than closers. They pitch nearly 4 times as much as a closer.

"Pounding sand since 1982...."

by cubswynn on Jun 22, 2009 11:50 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

So you meant innings, then.

That makes sense, but you said 50-70 times, so I thought you meant outings.

Starting pitching is much more important, you’re right. The 9th inning atmosphere magnifies flaws. Setup men and middle relievers I think are just as important. But you’re right, the innings are fewer.

I believe it's okay to be sorry to see Wood leave and to understand

and agree $10M+ per year was too much for him to stay, even in a one year deal.

Liking a player and being rational on his value don’t have to be mutually exclusive.

As pitchers go, Wood is exactly what I like

to watch.

Humble guys bringing upper 90’s heat with a mean breaking ball are fun as hell to watch.

He had/has HOF stuff with journeyman’s health. He was a great Cub, but will not be remembered as a great player.

Good post

Isn’t the priority to win? Isn’t that what we all want, to see the Cubs win it all? You don’t win titles by thinking with your heart, you win by thinking with your head. Letting St Kerry go was the smart move.

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. This is the kind of fan I am.

Cool

Honestly guys, I’m OK with it. Unlike some, Cubs baseball isn’t life or death to me…nor are my opinions whether shown to be correct or incorrect. Have your fun, you’ve earned it.

And I don’t want the slightest bit of “I-told-you-so” credit if this mini-hot streak turns cold any time soon. Paint me as the villain or the village idiot all you want. I’m comfortable in my own analysis of what this season and this team is or has been.

… put an “I jumped ship before it was actually sinking” sandwich board on you, and make you circle Wrigley for 5 hours. You’ve lost sight of what should be the #1 rule for Cubs fans… don’t stop believing.

I can tell you are getting close to climbing back on board though… you’ve gone from “when” to “if this streak turns cold”. Leaving yourself that tiny out shows there is room for the belief to return. We’ll be waiting with open arms!

Let’s see…a four-game win streak of observations or a 60-some book of evidence on where this team really is at. I’ll take the book of evidence every single day even if some of you guys are strictly cheerleaders.

60-some book of evidence on where this team is really at?

that would be tied with Milwaukee in the loss column, with well over half the season to go.

And

An offense that isn’t very good. Period. A .500 ballclub. LIke I’ve tried to point out to you without success…because that “hot streak” is right around the corner….and if it doesn’t start today, it will start tomorrow or the next day or the next day because I said it will that’s why.

Who needs a stinkin' tag line? What are they for anyway?

by krummy12 on Jun 23, 2009 8:07 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

and, like everyone's tried to explain to you

it’s not a .500 offense. This is a team that SHOULD be playing much better. Soriano is not a .223 hitter. Bradley is not a .240 hitter. There is every reason to believe that this team could start clicking better than it is.

The Cubs may go .500 for the year, but that doesn’t mean they’re a mediocre ball club — only that they played like one. And there is a difference, whether you’re willing to comprehend that or not.

Tied with Milwaukee in the loss column. Over 90 games to go. There’s no way to know what happens.

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter.
