Torch Lake

Went camping there with my brother almost 30 years ago and we had a blast. Sailing and swimming, card games until midnight – the only bad thing is that the baseball strike was going on and there was nothing to listen to on the radio. :-(

same

Wednesday evening and Thursday afternoon to the right of home plate. I have no tips for the ballpark. Heard from former Detroit residents to check out the museum area, riverwalk and Coney Island.

Going to all three games

Behind the plate Tuesday, down the third-base line Wednesday, in the upper deck first-base side Thursday.

I hear they have casinos there. I think the one in Windsor is calling my name.

Casinos

There are three in Detroit (Greektown, MGM Grand, and Motor City.) Greektown is within walking distance of Comerica Park. If you want to go to Windsor to Caesars Windsor, don’t forget your passport.

I saw where the new border-crossing rules are in effect

Thanks for the heads-up and the suggestions. The dollar is a little better deal in Canada now, plus I’m not sure I like the idea of walking around in downtown Detroit late at night with cash in my pocket.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Jun 21, 2009 5:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

YOU HAVE THE IDEA......

Stay with the crowds and don’t walk down too many side streets. ( At night that is ) The action all centers around Greektown for restaurants/bars ect . Detroit Beer Co ( A brew pub) on Broadway near Comerica has tasty food and brews . The Cub fans will be a big shot in the arm for the Motor City’s economy .

This former suburban Detroiter's recommendations

There are some cool places to grab some eats around Comerica Park – Lafayette Coney Island, Hockeytown Cafe, and Pizzapoplis in Greektown. The rest of the city is pretty crummy so watch your step outside of the immediate area around the stadium.

Let me know if you need some tourist recommendations if you’re staying in the area for a few days.

by CaliCub on Jun 21, 2009 3:48 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Be happy to hear recommendations

I mentioned Coney Island, Riverwalk and the museums above.

WhistlerWilliams

by WhistlerWilliams on Jun 21, 2009 5:58 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

+1 for the museums

Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum are terrific. They also offer tours of Ford’s Fairlaine mansion and also the Dodge Mansion out in Rochester Hills (next to Oakland University), so if you’re into seeing some incredible homes try to see those. The Cranbrook Institute of Science out in Bloomfield Hills is cool to check out too.

by CaliCub on Jun 21, 2009 6:16 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Also

The Detroit Institute of the Arts is not too far, by the campus of Wayne State. Also, for you Star Trek fans, there is a Star Trek exhibit at the Detroit Science Center. I went, if you are a trekkie, you’ll have a great time.

Chris Chelios

Has a Cheli’s Chile right across the street from Comerica. Not bad, if you can stand to eat in a White Sox fan’s place.

I definitely recommend Pizza Papalis for pizza. A lot like Lou Malnati’s.

since I live 25 minutes from Comerica Park

I will be there all three games as well.

Because of the economy, I had to “cheap out” an only get 2 tickets on Tuesday (taking my son), 4 on Wednesday (my dad is coming up from Indiana for this one) and 2 on Thursday (probably my wife and myself) all in the RF stands.

I’ll have my Cub hat on, so say hello if you are there. Sorry, I don’t a BCB shirt.

If you think you've seen it all...just wait!

Parking around Comerica

Is not cheap. Don’t be surprised to pay in excess of $20 for parking. A lot f the restaurants around town run shuttles to the park. I have used Nemo’s which is over by what’s left of Tiger Stadium.

(Parking from $5-25) Street parking CAN be free if you find a spot, but that’s at your own risk…and walking back at night to a street spot can be dicey…

280 MILE DRIVE....

For us but we will be there for Wed and Thursday games …Parking can be so-so downtown at times . Both Nemo’s and Old Shilleagh Irish Pub have shuttle service to and from the ball park. ( I have parked in Nemo’s lot before ) It is secure and there is alot of neat baseball and hockey memories to see on their walls . Not to mention one of the best cheeseburgers in town………….Go Cubs

Comerica is a nice park

I was there once but can’t remember who the Tigers played. Can’t remember the year, either. It was Ernie Harwell’s last season as their radio PXP guy.

I think there is also a Hard Rock Cafe southeast of the ballpark; in walking distance.

Unless it closed…

…not beyond the realm of possibility given the economy in Detroit.

For the really baseball starved, you can catch the Lansing Lugnuts at home Thursday night

after the Cubs-Tigers afternoon game ends. About 90 minutes northwest of Comerica. 7:05pm start. Tickets are $7-17.50 and it’s THIRSTY THURSDAY: $2 Labatts.

The Lugnuts are low A affiliates of the Toronto Bluejays.

i’d do this but i think i just wanna get home after the big league game and sleep. i’ll have had a long couple of weeks.

you going to chiefs @ whitecaps, zeke?

by nathew on Jun 21, 2009 11:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

When is that? I saw the Chiefs when they were playing the Lugs back in April...

Yeah, I saw a LOT of current and recently ex-Cubs on their way to Wrigley. The Lugnuts were the Cubs affiliate from 1999-2005. So I saw the following play at Olds Park:

Corey Patterson
Carlos Zambrano
Juan Cruz
Francis Beltran
Steve Smyth
Hee Seop Choi
Todd Wellemeyer
David Kelton
Sergio Mitre
Felix Sanchez
Mike Wuertz
Jason Dubois
Jon Leicester
Brendan Harris
Ronny Cedeno
Rich Hill
Adam Greenberg
Jermaine Van Buren
Ryan Theriot
Sean Marshall
Angel Guzman
Jae-Kuk Ryu
Renyel Pinto
Carlos Marmol
Juan Mateo
Ryan O’Malley
Buck Coats
Jose Reyes
Felix Pie
Rocky Cherry
Clay Rapada
Billy Petrick
Jake Fox
Carmen Pignatiello
Casey McGehee

While all didn’t stay in the bigs, this is quite a list. So I don’t agree with those who say the Cubs farm system has been barren for year…

LUGNUTS...

We have been to at least 5-6 games and try to go on Thursdays. I told my wife that I felt that Pie,Theriot, Patterson, Hill, and Big Choi all would make it to the big league . ( She thought I had a screw loose ) …. Sure wish they were still in the Cubs system…. Sounds like it will be hot in the Motor City,

by cubs north on Jun 22, 2009 10:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I occasionally go on Thursdays, but not often.

After about the third inning the REALLY drunk people far outweigh the people there trying to actually watch the baseball game, so it’s not as much fun.

Sunny & 85 today, 90 tomorrow. At least by game time, it will have cooled off a little.

Thursday is a little cooler with a chance of T-storms.

Leaving for Detroit in an hour!

Catching all three by first base, third base and the outfield, respectively.

If you’re up for driving around the city a little,
1) Belle Isle is awesome. I’m picnicing there before Wednesday night game.
2) Motor City Brew Co has great beer, Avalon bakery has great bread, coffee, and some good snacks. They’re both right around the museums and Wayne St.

Also, READ THIS article about Detroit from the Reader.

Go Cubs Go

Come visit me inside Wrigley along the Addison side mezzanine fence straight up from 1st base.
