Gameboard and Warm-up Balls

Great day in the bleachers today with wonderful weather and the big sweep. Also, I had a chance to chat with Jessica, which was nice.

Let me start at the beginning for those who are not familiar with this.  Between innings, the outfielders warm up with right and center playing catch and the left fielder tossing with someone in the bullpen.  Before the inning starts, the fielder tosses the ball into the stands as a souvenir.  At every previous game I have attended (with an exception I will discuss below) the right and center fielders take turns throwing the ball to the fans.  Today, Fukadome tossed the ball into the stands all nine innings while Bradley never did.  Has this been going on all year?

The exception was Jacque Jones.  On top of his rocky reception by fans, a woman tossed a ball near or at him (depending on the story) during one night game in 2006.  After that he stopped tossing the ball to fans and Juan Pierre want along; they threw the ball to the bullpen after they were done warming up.

On other note: I saw Jones in spring training after that year and asked if he would be tossing balls to fans in the upcoming year.  He said; "It's a new year; let's see" and he did until he was traded later in 2007.

What are you confused about??

To answer the original posters question… I’ve sat in the bleachers twice this year, right-center both times, and Bradley tossed some balls up.

This just feels like a strange thing to "worry" about

Where did he say he was worrying about it?

He’s merely asking if Bradley, for some reason, doesn’t ever throw the ball into the stands. It’s pretty straight forward, or at least it is to me.

by kanderber on Jun 21, 2009 10:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Read to me like

he’s saying Bradley must have some issue with the fans like Jones did to not throw the ball up today.

Just seems like a strange thing to notice or care enough about to blog about, to me… thats all.

You don't even talk about Bradley in the post,

so I’m confused as to why it’s title involves gameboard.

Bradely played right field in today's game

but, I edited that in so no one else will be confused.

toss enough quarters

and you’ll have runs of heads in a row and tails in a row. The ball’s just ended up with Dome every time this game.

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. This is the kind of fan I am.

Not true

Have you ever watched a game in the right or right center bleachers? I have been there nearly 100 times and have never seen anything but the fielders taking turns; I have never once seen the same fielder have the ball at the end of warm-ups two innings in a row until today.

It matters because it shows Bradley is a baby

if he believes he’s too good to throw balls into the stands. If this is true, they I think it shows a bad side of his character.

I believe Bradley wants to win just as much as anyone else. I understand if he’s pissed about the fans reaction, but he could always find a kid to throw it to.

I think that’s a fairly mature way of making sure he doesn’t get into it with the fans till they realize how valuable Bradley really is.

Disagree.

He should understand why the fans are upset with him. If he wants to avoid “getting into it with fans,” he could take my advice and throw it to a kid. Be the bigger man. Realize you made an incredibly stupid mistake after already being on thin ice.

by cubswynn on Jun 22, 2009 12:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Well

setting aside the fact that he’s not on thin ice and shouldn’t be considered as such, I’m relatively certain that Milton Bradley knows that the fans were upset with him over the botched second out. He gets them back by excellent play — like yesterday — instead of throwing balls into the stands.

I’m pretty sure he gets to make that decision, too.

Okay that's exactly it.

He shouldn’t need to “get back” at the fans. He needs to understand that fans pay their hard earned money to essentially pay his salary. He needs to be a professional, swallow his pride, and play nice with the fans. Not throwing warm up balls into the stands is a bad way to get back into their good graces. It doesn’t help the situation one bit.

And yes he is on thin ice with many fans. Like it or not, that is an undeniable fact.

Rec'd. There are probably 1 million possible explanations for why Gameboard didn't throw any balls into the stands on this particular day.

I will never understand why people immediately assume that of those million possible explanations, the correct one must be something sinister or nefarious. If you want to criticize Milton for something legitimate — like throwing a ball in the stands when he ISN’T supposed to — fine, do so. That’s completely legitimate. But posts like this are idiocy, nothing more.

Last time I sat in the bleachers there was a very nuanced case being made

Something to the effect of, “Right field sucks!”

It was repeated many times over the course of the game by many an upstanding gentlemen in left, so I assume it must be true. I don’t see why Milton Bradley should be blamed for something everyone in left field seems to know as common knowledge.

He does work for the fans.

How many times do we have to hear that baseball, as well as all other professional sports, are a form of “entertainment”.

If Bradley wants to be a jag and not throw the ball into the crowd, that certainly reduces his entertainment value. And since the fans pay for the entertainment, he owes them something more. Period.

The guy is behaving like a child. Perfume the pig all you want, but he thinks he’s getting even with the fans by not throwing a ball into the crowd.

Does the ball magically transform into something else because he doesn’t throw it? Do you think it matters to the person who catches the ball? Seriously?

you know

I can elaborate on that.

I have been in the LF corner section for 3 1/2 years — that’s about 270 games.

Know how many times the ball has been anywhere within 75 feet of me?

Zero.

I won’t be as, um, direct as Drew, just will say again that this is making a big deal out of nothing.

When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. This is the kind of fan I am.

Be sure to get others...........

…………to join your MB fan club. Looks like his stock is on the rise.

Your passion is great it’s simply too bad that it’s generally misguided.

Double Yawn.

Friends, I thought we were past this, no? I don’t have the energy to respond again, so here’s a link to my thoughts instead: <http://www.bleedcubbieblue.com/2009/6/10/904956/a-little-less-talk-and-a-lot-more#16803525>

It's because of ball-in-the-stands-gate

Or whatever you want to call it, that infamous day that will live in infamy when Bradley selfishly threw the game ball into the stands when there were only 2 outs.

Later in that game, he threw a warm-up ball into the stands and the fan in the bleachers threw the ball back.

But if you want to believe he’s not doing it because he’s a selfish angry man then I guess more power to you.

This is a recent development..........

……….coinciding, I’m sure, with the “incident” and Bradley’s relatively overall poor play.

At the start of the season, Bradley was indeed chucking a practice ball into the stands, sharing the half-innings with the center fielder. That has changed over the past few weeks and I’m sure it is because the RF crowd has started to ride him.

My Question

My original post, styled as a question, was in fact a question. I know what I saw yesterday but did not know if it is part of a pattern. I do not know and am not saying that Bradley’s actions (if a pattern) are an attempt to put it in the face of the fans. There is links on whether this may be the case.
and .

I referenced Jacque Jones’ actions. If someone sees an implication that I think his actions were wrong, they would be correct. I see the other side, that a baseball player is signed only to play baseball, but disagree with that. Further, putting it in the fans’ face reflects extremely poor judgment by the player if that is what he is doing. A player will have an easier time and probably will do better with the fans on his side.

I generally am a fan of Gameboard and do not like the generally negative tone of posts about him here. I am glad he has vocal defenders. Still, I do not find the Bradly-can-do-no-wrong camp to have any more credibility that the Bradley-can-do-no-right camp.

I will continue cheering on Gameboard and the rest of the team this week in Detroit and hope to see you all there.

Peace! WhistlerWilliams
