Wrigley Field Scoreboard Mystery
During interleague play, when the Yankees play the Mets, the Wrigley scoreboard has panels that read "NY (N)" and "NY (A)". Apparently, the two Los Angeles teams don't rate the same courtesy:

Interesting
I wonder if it has anything to do with the “of Anaheim” absurdity at the end of the team name? Or is it just that LA is too long to spell and they didn’t want to make additional team name signs with a smaller font for 6 games a year.
Don’t leave me hanging like this!

Well...
… they make up special panels for the NY teams… they could make “LA (N)” and “LA (A)” for the same reason.
It still looks weird to see Los Angeles at Los Angeles. Your only clue is that the game was on the AL side.

The "Anaheim" at the end is an absurdity to a degree...
Arte Moreno bought the team in 2002. He wanted to return the team to it’s “roots” as much as possible. (NOTE: I believe there was a Los Angeles Angels AAA baseball team dating to the late 1800’s). He wanted to change the name back to it’s original name (Los Angeles Angels) but there was a stipulation in the 25 year lease (negotiated between city of Anaheim and Disney) stating “Anaheim” had to be included in the name. So…you get the strange name. Even us die-hard Angel fans hated it at first. Now…we don’t pay too much attention.
Moreno aggressively advertises the Angels in the LA Area, even close to Dodger’s Stadium. He is a long range thinker. There is speculation that he will move the team from Anaheim and closer to LA when the lease expires.

I would assume...
That they just didn’t worry about it since the games would be played so late that no one would be there to watch the scoreboard?

That photo sparked some curiosity
I looked up the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on wikipedia… and made a discovery. In their expansion season of 1961, the Angels played all of their home games in Wrigley Field. How’s that for some fun trivia?

Bill Veeck
Wanted to move the St.Louis Browns there in the 50’s. He felt stadium was seen as unfit, it only held about 21,000. The only way the Angels were allowed to play in L.A. in 1961 was because Dodgers’ Owner, Walter O’Malley, demanded they had to play their first season in Wrigley Field. O’Malley did not want to compete in L.A. with a second team.

Unfortunately, it was too small for an MLB park.
It is part of what contributed to so many home runs during the ’61 season.
The stadium was intentionally modeled after Wrigley – Chicago, except for the smaller dimensions. Here are a couple of links for pictures and other information;
Sports Hollywood.
Ballparks of Baseball.com
The park was torn down in the wake of the ’65 Watts riots. The stadium was sitting mostly unused. So, the stadium was razed to make way for a park and a medical center. It was demolished in 1968.
What’s interesting is that some of the homes visible beyond the left field wall are still there, in mostly the same condition.
For a bit more fun, there was a TV series taped at Wrigley in the early ’60’s called “Home Run Derby”. It was essentially a game show of baseball’s best hitters trying to hit more HR’s than one another in a 9 inning “game”. It was taped (filmed?) at Wrigley – LA.

what is the origin of that?
from a scoreboard history view
by stadiumguru on Jun 22, 2009 9:12 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think because...
… esthetically, a four-letter “NITE” matches up better with “GAME” than “NIGHT” would.
Also reduces the number of letters they need. They can use a “1” for the “I”, thus they need only panels with the letters N, T, E, G, A and M.

ofcourse it seems that way
but you really don’t know what you’re gonna get after some minor league action, he can possibly slideinto their No3 slot in front of Braden Looper. Trevor Hoffman and Casey McGehee were not on many other teams wish list either but have so far produced fine for them. With or without Pedro, their pitching doesnt seem intimidating, I agree….. but Pedro could get them a few more wins than they’d have without him. That’s all I’m saying.

The difference between McGehee/Hoffman was they were wanted enough to be in Spring Training and break with the team. Pedro didn’t even get invited and that was after a pretty decent showing in the WBC.

So the Chicago Wolves of the AHL
..should be the “Rosemont Wolves?”
Arte Moreno realizes the Angels are worth more (in many respects) in using “Los Angeles.” Anaheim is just a few miles down the freeway from the city limits of Los Angeles. There’s nothing absurd about this. The Los Angeles Rams played in Anaheim for years. The Giants and Jets play in New Jersey.

Angels' location
Al and SDSJM are right. Lots of pro sports teams play or have played in venues physically located in smaller towns outside of a major city but they have retained the name of the major city.
The Angels were originally the Los Angeles Angels and changed to the California Angels when they moved south. Gene Autry refused names such as the Anaheim Angels or Long Beach Angels. California Angels was just a marketing move; pre-Padres, it was meant to include everyone in Southern California. Disney changed the name to the silly Anaheim Angels to promote Disneyland and other Anaheim assets (same for Mighty Ducks of NHL). Moreno wanted to change back to Los Angeles Angels but was forced to keep Anaheim in the official name because of Disney contract.
Related stupidity, when the A’s were considering a move to Fremont, a small Bay Area city, the debate was whether to call the team the Fremont A’s or the Oakland A’s of Fremont.

During Anaheim's court action against Moreno, he did hint
of possibly moving just a few miles north across the L-A County line, just up the Santa Ana Fwy. That put the fear of God into Anaheim. It led to the end of lawsuits against Moreno. I think La Mirada was making some noise about a possible ball park location near the 5.
